Which former Charlton Player did I meet last night at the Valley?

He was born overseas but joined us as a Schoolboy having been educated in Charlton.

He only played 8 games in total, scoring once, but is still involved with the club in some way (the headline is a clue).

Who is he?

I wouldn't have recognised him if someone hadn't introduced me but lovely fella.

  • What era?
  • [cite]Posted By: L Block JT[/cite]What era?

He was at the club under Firmani and Foley
  • Luciano Massiello Chairman of Former Players Association
  • I believe it's Luciano Massiello, apologies if incorrectly spelt: now looks after the Former Players Association.

    Spot on Len.

I did say the headline was a clue.

Really nice guy. Said he is rarely recognised as a former player but is delighted when he is.

    What a good website
  • Did you ask Luciano at about his one-two with Graham Moore from which Moore hit the most vicious volley ever seen in the history of football. You just saw the Norwich net bulge. It was interestingly the first shot that the stand-in keeper had to save after Kevin Keelan had been injured. Those were the days.
  • How many can you name..

There's a few missing, but at a glance:

Alan Ellis, John Keirs, Ship Ship Shipperley, Sir Charlie Wight, Mike Kenning , Harry Gregory, Maurice Setters,

Brian Kinsey, -,Norman Fusco , Wally Went, Ray Treacy, Cyril Davies, Paul Gilchrist,

Peter Reeves, Dennis Booth, Bob Curtis, Jimmy Mullen ?, Skipper Graham Moore, Lucien Massiello, Keithy Peacock, Phil Warman, Alan Campbell
  • did Charlie Wright own a cafe down by the flyover?
  • I believe so, but he'll be retired now.

The guy to the left of Paul Went as we look at it is Norman Fusco who played for and managed Margate when it became Thanet United amongst other non league clubs. I think the guy to his left as we look at it could be John Kiers.

He did indeed, my Dad and his best mate were regulars. He sold it I believe a few years back.

I forgot about John Kiers, regular 2nd choice centre half. He was a Scot, sadly died of cancer at comparatively early age a number of years ago.

I keep thinking that is Matt Tees between Brian Kinsey and Norman Fusco, but I thought he'd already been sold to Luton by then.
  • And if Cyril Davies is in that 1970-71 season team picture, then centre forward Dickie Plumb should be there also - both signed about the same time from non-league Yeovil Town.
  • Charlies Place in Lassell St, Greenwich....I had a few breakfasts in there! It's not near the flyover though
  • John Kiers came from Ayr

They do a great former players golf day too - played with Derek #Hales last season and he was quite a laugh - not to mention a good golfer.

  • I think the one to the right of Charlie Wright is Mike Kenning - too small for Dick Plumb.
  • Also Maurice Setters on the end top right not Barry Endean
  • To the left of Charlie is Mike Kenning. To the right is Dave Shipperley.
  • Yes, well, I meant to the right of Charlie Wright as we were viewing it.

Thanks for that Thai ..... I originally did put Marice Setters name in, but later edited out and put in Endean's name instead.

And, Shooters also, you're dead right - it's Mike Kenning.

Dickie Plumb should be there - but looks like he's not in the picture.
Edit: I'll edit my team line up post to show these changes. Cheers guys!

    I reckon it's 1970-71 season. Blimey, that's nearly 40 years ago ...!!
  • So, who's left .... John Keirs, next to Shipps? Or in front of him, next to Norman Fusco?

We were behind you in Bartrams, but as you were talking to our chairman we did not get a chance to introduce ourselves to you.

That was one hell of a strike ....... but what you didn't mention Thai, was that the move started with Charlie Wright throwing the ball out long, and after a 'training head tennis move' of a series of cushioned headed passes on the run between Moore and Gordon Riddick, Moore brought the ball down and stroked it out wide to Masiello - and as you describe, turned it back low towards the edge of the box and Moore still running, hit it first time with the most full-blooded volley you could imagine.

I was leaning on the red railings right behind the Covered End net with my mates and, Jeez - I swear we all ducked when the ball hit the net.

No Norwich player even got near the ball. If the move had been televised, they'd still be talking about it today.

Thai, tell these people what a quality player and inspirational skipper that Graham Moore was.

Sorry Rodex, would have come over if I had known. There were some other Lifers there as well.

    Next time.
