It's not as obvious as that, but I have played in games where teams will gang up on the referee, and try and influence him, and it's terrible. Our club knows that if we don't have a ref, we don't have a match on a Saturday afternoon, but that doesn't stop some of our players treating him like shit, and acting like complete tossers.

I happen to be in the fortunate position to play football and rugby, and I'm not going to preach to you about how much people respect the ref in rugby, because I can see some of the attitude that footballers have towards the referee's creeping into rugby, what I have seen though, is hundreds of obnoxious parents, who have never played and, up until seeing their lad play on a Sunday morning, have never watched a game of rugby, but they are incredibly negative about how they play. However, I do find in the majority of cases that this is not the case, however it is the few that could ruin it for the many.

Having never played youth football I can't say it's the same, but I'm sure they are very similar to my experiences in youth rugby.

N.B. I apologise if my strong language offends.
  • Yes and much worse from parents at kids matches on a very regular basis.
