Bailey

edited March 2009 in General Charlton
As Bailey seemed to have settled into the 'Graham Stuart' role quite well,
I was wondering if anyone thinks this might be a better position for him?

My thoughts are that after an explosive performance against Reading at home I thought his form dipped pretty fast in centre mid. The game seemed to pass him by and/or he always seemed a yard short (as I remember, Holland was playing next to him though!). It then culminated in what seemed a total loss of confidence and some terrible errors.

He always gives 100% though so lets hope he stays, whatever position.

  • I think it might be, and as someone said in another thread, he's protecting Youga. Hope he stays, he'll get goals and is good enough to stand out in League One.
  • good decision making by parky putting him out there......... law of averages and all that ;-)
  • I think this is a good position for him and makes the best of his attacking abilities, breaking into the box. All we need is somebody on the right who can effing cross the ball! For Soares read Thomas, Sam without the ability to go past players....:o(

    Ebanks-Blake Wolverhampton 23
    Doyle Reading 18
    Scotland Swansea 18
    McCormack Cardiff 14
    Smith Watford 14
    Iwelumo Wolverhampton 13
    Phillips Birmingham 13
    Gallagher Plymouth 12
    Hulse Derby 12
    Tudgay Sheff Wed 12
    Blackstock QPR 11
    Gomez Swansea 11
    Paterson Burnley 11
    BAILEY CHARLTON 10
    Hunt Reading 10

For any midfield player to score 10 + goals a season is a fantastic achievement. Even better with the postion we are in.
  • Hasn't Iwelumo been stuck on 13 for about three months? At least , it seems like that !
  • He should be playing central for me. It kind of depends on what happens in the summer, but we're overmanned in midfield. I think Parky wanted to drop him but couldn't because of his goals and shoe-horned him into position. I'm willing to be proved wrong, but I've rarely seen him beat a man or put in a cross (Stuart did do these things). He looks like a very good central midfielder playing out wide.

With you there. Racon and Bailey in the middle for sure.
  • Who on the left? Out of Basey, Sam, Ambrose and Spring if you did that I guess.
  • Out injured for 'boro, has he been playing?
  • A regular I think, plays as a defensive midfielder for them

Stayed with us a year after relegation, then the club shipped him out for a decent return.  I am one of those that did not like him and felt he was over rated but to say he was disloyal is well wide of the mark.
  • I thought he was a great player very constant and always gave his all. As above stayed for a year after relegation again, and we needed him off the wage bill! can't ask for much more really.
  • I think he was excellent for us and one of the few players we had that had a decent sell on value. It wasn't his fault that we were potless.

Glad to see that he is doing well for 'Boro. I always thought he was good enough for at least the next level.
  • Wasn't my favourite in centre mid (as my original post) but glad he is doing well up there
  • I liked him as a player, but not as a captain. There were a few times in his last season where he was play-acting and falling all over the place, Southend away on a Friday night was one of those times i think.
  • To be fair to Bailey, he was punched at Southend; though he did make a meal of it.

I think they were particularly quick to complain though because they'd all seen his antics before when he used to play for them.

  • Disappointed thought this thread was going to be about the dog
  • yes the play acting was tiresome, but the guy was one of the few highlights of that dreadful period, and for me only a handful of players really played to anywhere near there performance levels most fans expected.
I think it is very difficult for us as fan's to know what goes on at the club , the personal politics, the money, and a range of other issues that that we assume.
We had some talented footballers at Charlton who for one reason, could not or did not perform on the pitch. I think we call it 'Charltonised'
I cannot say that Bailey came into that section, Thomas, JFH, Todorov, Marcus Bent, even Ambrose, frankly these players underperformed to my expectations, and there are plenty more I am sure we could all add to.
I had a dislike on Rommadahl, a talented player for his country, who just seemed to go missing some games?, or at least part of the game.
At times my frustration with the team got the better of myself, whatever the circumstances the performances were dire.
Thank god the present team appear to show a spirit where things are  more positive.
  • He has settled in very well at Middlesborough. I guess that Mowbray is his kind of manager, i.e. blunt and to the point. It'll be interesting to see how 'Boro go without him over the next few weeks.

He wanted out when we were relegated and we were more than happy to sell him as it was thought that with the goals he scored in the Championship relegation season we would get a decent fee for him.

Sadly, for both parties, no one came in for him despite his agent touting him around everywhere. He didn't stay out of loyalty, he stayed because he couldn't get a move.

I made a judgement on his loyalty when he gave an interview shortly after he won the player of the year award and said something along the lines of 'I will stay if I have to, but no one knows what will happen' which I read as come and get me please.

I have to say, though, that I thought he was a liability with his tackling and he lost the ball too often, but to his credit he is holding down a place in a team that is right up there in the Championship. I also think we really missed him last season - something that I wouldn't have thought until he went.
  • Seemed happy to stay at the Sponsors dinner, conducted himself really well and was likeable. Wish the bloke well for the future.

When we were first relegated the club accepted an offer from Middlesboro but he turned it down. One reason was that he didn't fancy moving up there but he also felt that he owed us something for taking him to the next level in his career.
While he was certainly quoted as saying "but no one knows what will happen" this was as much as Charlton wanting him out then him wanting to go.

That wasn't what I heard, but there are two sides to every story.
  • Thought his tackling was excellent, far superior to Semedo.  Just he had a bit of non-league about him, and would positionally switch off or go kamikaze.  But was one of the few players who if he made a mistake busted a gut to get a tackle in whilst everyone thought somebody else should do it, and unfortunately that led to a few penalties/dangerous free kicks.  Think he debut'ed at Watford, and was immense that day.  Learning when to sit and stick, was something he lacked, but being given a defined role as a screening midfielder he's far superior to Semedo in the champ.
  • Liked the fella felt he always gave his all shame others around him didnt

He suffered from trying to pass too long due to our p1$$ poor shape under Parky. You don't score that many goals from midfield without some talent. Curious that his role has changed at Boro.
