Charlton Athletic Mastercard

edited March 2009 in General Charlton
Yesterday I received an application form for this card with a letter saying 'if you want to show your support for the Addicks this is the credit card for you', and that 'this could be your signing of the season-get behind your club today'. Is this really the right time for the Club to be putting its name to an MBNA credit card, even if it does make a few bob from it? To me the cynical side is that I reckon I would receive the card around the same time as the S.T applications. How handy to have a brand new card to use, especially as I would get points towards acquiring 'a whole range of fantastic Charlton Athletic merchandise'. Any thoughts out there?

  • it's only a promotion , take it or leave it
they've had their name on some sort of credit card for years
if you can afford it and want too, renew, if not leave it , they're not twisting your arm
  • I think you'll find the Charlton Athletic MBNA Visa card has been available for many years, it's no new thing.

    Just the latest promotion.
  • Fair enough chaps, it's in the bin!
  • I'm with you March 51.

I resent my personal details being used to bombard me with junk mail and resented the cold calls i received from Llanera.

I'm 99.99999% certain that I would have indictated that I did not want to be contacted if the option was available to do so and if that option was not available then it may be that the Club are in breach of the Law although I am no expert.

My thoughts were how could they afford the postage etc at a time the Club is skint.

I wish they would put as much energy into the playing side.

    Rant over!
  • The cost of the postage (basically everything to do with the mailing) would have been with MBNA. The club simply get a commission (very low) for every time the card is used as well as an agreed payment for every card sold.

The benefit to MBNA is they get additional customers using a database supplied to them by Charlton.

I got one of these mailings and was shredded within 5 seconds of receiving it. Did not see a problem in it being sent out, but simply do not need a new credit card at present.
  • Yes Len, I'd forgotten the Llanera people, we got bothered by them quite a few times. They got the usual response but kept coming back!

Charlton should not be passing on our personal details to 3rd parties without our consent.

Notwithstanding that we boast of being a "community club" and rainforests in the programme have been dedicated to trying to stop people smoking not forgetting the countless decibels over the tannoy.

Is it right for a "community club" to collude in encouraging fans to take on debt during a credit crunch with all the uncertainty with employment prospects and ability to repay?

    Just read the redundancy thread.

Debt causes stress and stress makes people drink and smoke so the whole thing is self defeating!

I may well be in a minority of 1 (or perhaps 2 with March51) but as Tom Jones sung It's not unusual....

Got it in one Len! I've had the odd problem with cards and it's a very unpleasant experience and can effect much more than just yourself because of the stress factor. Perhaps it's because I am now 'card free' that I'm sensitive to new offers of '0% on this and that for 3 months' being stuffed in the letter box. There's owt for nowt where MBNA are concerned!
