At the moment I am thoroughly peed off with football in general and footballers in particular. I mean our lot get probably 250k a year, minimum, for producing a load of rubbish. So I was hearted when talking to a 'Knight of the Road' AA man who spent an hour getting my car started. We talked about our jobs and he told me that he had a nephew who had Duchennes muscular dystrophy, which is the worst of the physical disabilities giving kids a lifespan of 21 years or so, if they are lucky. He told me that his nephew had a special chair fitted to the car to enable him to be very secure and able to turn sideways. This 'grand prix' car seat cost 1.5 thousand pounds. The Mum applied to charity and received a prompt cheque for the money. Relieved and thankful the family wondered who was responsible because they wanted to send a thankyou letter. Eventually they were told it was donated by the 'Beckhams.' This has restored a little bit of my faith in our tarnished game because the Beckhams did not seek publicity for this act of charity and I thought fair play to them. They do get a dodgy press for their high lifestyle but at least they put something back and made life easier for this tragic family. All I need now if for Charlton to win three games on the spin and I might get enthusiastic about football again...fat chance!
It doesn't make headlines in the gutter press, and the Beckhams don't seek public recognition for their act of kindness - so nobody knows about it, except for stories like this.
This tarnished game stuff is utter bullshit. Players now do a lot more charity/community work than at any time in the past and you generally don't get to hear about it. They pay huge amounts in tax. It's just sheer jealousy. Lewis Hamilton hits the big time and zips straight off to a tax haven, so is contributing the square root of fk all to the hospitals and education system that supported him and his family. As did Button and Coulthard who didn't even have the decency to be any good. They don't get as criticism, but because football's a working class game - that generates a lot more money than any other - it leads to young working class men getting pots of cash. Where would you people like this dosh to go? Rupert Murdoch. Greedy Chairmen? I just do not understand the bile.
Some are good with it, others are knobs. That is life. You don't know what our players do. Or others. So why assume the worst? The point of the story is that Beckham did something nice anonymously - he doubtless does a lot more too. I think he's an enormously decent man. If I had his looks, talent and lifestyle I wonder if I - or many others - would conduct myself anything like as well.

One of the best posts I've ever seen on here. Want to join my clique?
I used to do volunteer IT work for the MDC (Muscular Dystrophy Campaign) and I could name you twenty footballers off the top of my head who gave an enormous amount of money and dedicated lots of their time to visiting kids in hospitals, care homes and hospices. Some of them were not exactly footballers you'd associate with having a 'giving' personality, to put it mildly. It sickens me to see privileged arseholes like Lewis Hamilton escaping pretty much any form of abuse despite paying zilch tax to this country whilst footballers get blamed for all the ills of society. Yes, some footballers are turds - but many of them are decent human beings - and David Beckham is an excellent role model for kids.
Dazzler, I hadn't sussed the settings! Morts, good post but I am not jealous of footballers earnings, just bewildered. In the same way I was bewildered by bankers taking home millions in bonuses before their house of cards fell down. I used to work in a PD school in Tottenham. Steve Perryman and Chris Hughton couldn't do enough for our disabled kids and always brought the Tottenham team in every Christmas. I am sure the Charlton team do the same for the PD school in Charlton. The point being that although I am fed up with football in general and Charlton in particular it is heart warming to hear about otherwise pampered footballers doing wonderful stuff for the underpriviledged. Long may it continue.
