I have just dug up my last Charlton supporter exam paper, which I had to take in 1997. Anyone else remember taking it? I was going to leave it until the start of next month to share this, but as everyone's resigned to our fate now, I thought it would be good to remind us that we actually signed up for the good times as well as the bad times. I have only included the last question from the exam here. And, as everyone who took it knows, the answer is, of course, (e).
20-year Charlton Athletic Supporter Entrance Examination, 1997
35. Consider each of the following scenarios and indicate under which of these circumstances you are willing to remain a Charlton supporter over the next twenty years.
a - This season (1997-98) ends in failure for Charlton and relegation, followed by several unsuccessful seasons in tier three, culminating in Administration, closure of the Valley and the new club (Charlton Athletic (2002) Ltd) playing home games at Priestfield Stadium, Gillingham in tier three.
b - This season (1997-98) ends with Charlton in mid-table, followed by several seasons in tier two, culminating in relegation to tier three, where Charlton repeatedly compete for promotion. Charlton remain owned by its current board of directors.
c - This season (1997-98) ends with Charlton gaining promotion to the Premier League via a Wembley Play Off. Immediate relegation is followed by a Championship-winning season and several years of competitive football in the Premiership. Charlton complete the stadium development, with two one-tier and two two-tier stands and a large videoscreen. Charlton sign several established European international players and have four players make England debuts. After several seasons, relegation to tier two is followed by relegation to tier three, two seasons later, from which Charlton re-build and attempt promotion at the first attempt. Plans remain to transform the 27,000-seater Valley to 35,000 plus and, eventually to over 40,000. Charlton remain owned by its current board of directors.
d - This season (1997-98) ends in relegation to tier three, followed, two seasons later by relegation to tier four. Several seasons of relegation battles see Charlton’s League status survive before an eventual promotion back to tier three. Charlton remain owned by its current board of directors.
Answer (a) (b) (c) (d) or (e - any of the above)
