strikers

edited March 2009 in General Charlton
I just wrote a big piece about the lack of them and lost it whilst previeing my post.

cant be bothered to do it again so the crux is that:

The 6 recogised strikers have scored 4 goals between hem in the last 20 games. Unless we get i a couple of srikers who can get 15-20 goals EACH next season we will be lucky to survive in Div 1 and willfind ourselves in the lower tier of league football the following season.

we need a Mendonca, a Hunt, a Bent (d not M) or going back.........a KILLER.

until we do we are doomed. Burton, Gray, Toddy aren't the answer. Dicko maybe, Fleets maybe.

  • Dickson scored 11 for Gillingham

If he was given a run of 4 or 5 games in the team he would score no problem but Pardew won't play him

Forget that he can't hold the ball up or that his all round game isn't great like Pardew tells us. So what.

He is a natural goal scorer and will get us goals. FACT

    LOL!!
  • We do. If we don't have them next season we're going to be in trouble. Fleetwood is not the answer, can't see him scoring regularly in League One. Dickson could in League One but we're going to need a few new strikers. Hope we get the right ones or we're going to be in even more trouble.
  • I'm afraid to say when I watch Dickson I have absolutely no idea why people get worked up about him.

Goals Scored by teams at the bottom (think this is right):

    Plymouth - 34
    Forest - 39
    Watford - 49
    Barnsley - 33
    Blackpool - 34
    Saints - 36
    Norwich - 46
    Charlton - 36

So out of the bottom 8 we are not the lowest scorers, in fact the three lowest scorers are OUT of the bottom three. Does this suggest that the problems are elsewhere or does it make it more infuriating that if we did score more we would be higher up?

We have however conceded the most goals out of the bottom 8 (58).

    we need.........a KILLER.

Nah he'll get banged up longer than a cigar wielding Joey Barton.
  • Can't remember the last time we had such poor return from our strikers.

As for Dicko listenening to the commentary last night it sounded like he was trying to hard to get that elusive league goal/

Apart from Henry's tongue in cheek message above Dickson has shown he can score but not at this level YET.
  • Sorry Ledge, you're totally wrong. He's unlikely to score as an isolated striker though. Etoo would have toiled to get one last night.
  • i never said he'd score in this system- just meant he's shown he can score at the level below - ie the division we are going to

I thought Dickson was just what Pardew said he was last night.

Skilful, tricky, very confident and willing to have a go at goal but...

not so hot on the hold up play, closing down or bringing other players in.

Had two or three good runs he created space for but missed good opportunities to play others in and missed a good chance at the far post at the end.

If Gray/Burton/Varney had missed that header they would have been crucified on here.

Varney was crucified for making chances and missing them.

I like Dickson. I think he has something and certainly if by some remote possibility we do go down (negative I know but it could happen) he will be a good striker for us. Keep him in the team but I think he'll do better in a 442 with Kandol or even McLeod. Or he maybe an impact player to come off the bench this season when he can run at tired players.

I think some were far too gushing in their praise and had unrealistic expectations of him earlier. Now the danger is that some will start to get on his back and slate every mistake and miss.

C'mon Chris, it will come. Keep trying, keep listening to Parkinsella and players like Burton who's been there and done it.

  • Where is Kandol?
He and Dickson were starting to develop a decent partnership.

    decent in what respect ?
[cite]Posted By: Salad[/cite]I'm afraid to say when I watch Dickson I have absolutely no idea why people get worked up about him.

what disappointed me last night was that our best ball in was from Butternut across the six yard box at which time Dicko was on the edge of the 18 yard box watching.
  • Varney and Gray probably got slated more than most because of the ridiculous amounts of money we paid for them (not their fault of course)

Id like Dickson to succeed, and next season he may do ok, but his touch is shocking and that header last night, blimey, Sandra Redknapp would have scored that.
  • Well we one won and drew two with those two up front.

Dickson and some others in the team are very talented in my opinion, however do you play a system and expect them to fit into it, or do you construct a system around them? I would say the latter personally, Parky seems to be doing the former..

Family problems. Hopefully he's back soon, I'd like to see them play together again.

As someone else said, it's happening with Jonjo as well. They're expected to score the goals, play well every match and not make mistakes.

Once it's mathematically impossible to stay up we'll probably see some good performances from those two.

Of course, play to their strengths, get the best out of what we have. It's exactly what most teams in this league do, and how we were under Curbs. Dickson looked like his best (apart from scoring a goal) with Kandol winning headers and holding up the ball for him.

If (still can't write when) we go down, we'll need a new defence - Ward, Hudson, Butterfield out the door, Moo2 gone, Youga only kept cause we can't afford anyone else. So Its a new defence, new forward line and pray we can hold onto the midfield
  • problem with that Kap10 is that is what has got us into his mess - selllng too many players and bringing in a completly new team.

We have to hold our nerve in the summer & keep the majority of what we have already. Ambrose,Weaver, Fortune & Toddy will go........Gray and Hudson maybe. I cant see us keeping Ward but if we can then great.

do not sell Bailey or Racon and keep Semedo Shelvey Basey Moo2 Elliot Dickson (Feetwood & Mcleod are still unknown to mst of us)
  • I admired Varney for his effort and apparent willingness but the fact that he is not even making the 16 at Derby under Nigel Clough speaks more clearly than I can.

That said he still showed more than the other strikers Dicko excepted who had had little opportunity at that time.

Blimey! Not much light in your world is there?
Can't we just be doomed this season, rather than you dooming us for next season too? :-)
We know that at least half of the players you mentioned can't cut the mustard in the CCC, but I think some might have a chance at a lower level next season.
At least you'll be happy in the knowledge that most of them probably won't be here next year, if/when we do topple over the abyss.
That'll give us another bunch of players that you will say are going to doom us.:-D
