Just Back

edited March 2009 in General Charlton
Don't really know how to sum it up.

We were poor. Given how important the game was the level of performance all over the park was not acceptable.

Both teams struggled with the weather in the first half, in the 2nd we went back to doing everything that we have done badly in the last 3-4 months.

I'll get hammered for this but..........Chris Dickson was utterly miserable tonight. He looked clueless. Sure he can't play up on his own, but that does not excuse his failure to do the basics i.e close the play down in the opposition half. His movement off the ball is non existant. I'm sorry but tonight we saw why he waited so long for his debut. The less said about the far post header the better.

Youga took a huge step backwards and looked as bad as ever.

I can't be bothered to write on. I don't see a way back from that. The performance was non-existant, the results have again gone against us. 50 points to stay up? I don't see us getting 40.

Sorry chaps, the majority of you let us and yourselves down tonight. No excuse for pedestrian, heartless shit that we saw from Spring, Soares, Youga, Ambrose, Burton, Sam etc etc. Do they players really care? I guess Hudson, Ward & Bailey put a shift in but that is about it.

Comments

  • Jonjo put a shift in put playing that role needs a man who can hold the ball up,unfortunately thats not Dickson, tonight we saw that Chris can't play the lone role,

Fair comment. Jonjo was ok, he worked hard but was ged scraps. Even when he was running on empty at the end his set pieces (corners) put most of the rest to shame.
  • On the plus side, I thought Doncaster were excellent - they were always looking to pass the ball from the back, and had the novel idea on a wet and blustery night of actually play it along the ground into feet.

As for us, there's not much to be add that hasn't already been said a million times before.

  • Dickson couldn't have played any role tonight and has no excuse about being a lone striker.
It's not as if we were continually lumping balls up to him. He couldn't control a simple ball infront of him , pass to anybody unmarked a few yards away or shoot.....Good to see he's taken the fans faith and the chance he's been given onboard!

I actually believe their CBs were/are under instruction not to play it long.

Shows that a team of diddy men can play football in this division. If of course they have the basics i.e the ability to move into space, play a five yard pass to feet and have a first touch.
  • Massive shame tonight as I really thought we would win most home games. Oh well.

I personally thought Chris Dickson's performance was laughable. The guy came from Dulwich Hamlet and he really looks like that's his level. His touch is pathetic, he doesn't have any awareness, his shooting is scuffed and the missed header was not even worthy of comment. Why all the fuss? All based on a decent loan spell at Gillingham?

I thought Bailey and Racon put in good shifts.

Doncaster were brilliant I thought with their level of finances. All down to decent coaching and movement. I wish we could play like that.

Blimey.....was expecting to get a lambasting for daring to have a pop at the messiah that is Dickson......;-) Seems a few sahre my opinion.

Racon was severly hampered by the absolute nonsense booking dished out to him by Styles. Was amazed he stayed on after the shoulder to shoulder business right near the end.
  • 50 POINTS TO STAY UP!!!! WE MUST BE KIDDING OURSELVES!

We've got 27 all season how are we going to double that before the end of the season.

Charlton Athletic will be playing League One football next season. The sooner we face it the better.

    ..........

And the failure of every other striking option tried this season - Gray, Varney, Burton, Todorov, Kandol etc...let's face it none have done the business.

  • Dickson was terrible, fact that he's come from non-league really stood out.
Spring - i just dont think he does much at all, game seemed to bypass him.
Butterfield looked shaky first 20 mins but was pretty competent after.
defending for that corner was unbelievable and unacceptable for a professional side.
plus points, Ward and Hudson looked solid, Bailey gave his all,Racon was alright, erm think that's it.
  • Just back as well.

Everyones given up now and just waiting for the inevitable. The crowd were completely outsung by the 15 or so Doncaster fans and their toy drum to our left of the Jimmy, the players bar perhaps Jonjo and Nicky were dreadful. I was one of Chris Dickson's biggest supporters when he couldn't get a chance but now we know why. I don't think I have seen a player look so lost and so down. Especially towards the end of the game he had just completely died within and im not sure he can recover. He looks like he is desperate to please and be a fans avourite but everyone was on him tonight and it just killed him. Burton looked ok when he came on which I suppose says a lot. There was no passion from the bench. We are just waiting to be relegated and its a very long and painful wait.
  • For what they are worth, my player ratings:

Elliot - 7 - Did what he needed to do well and no chance with the goals.
Butterfield - 6 - steady but not exceptional
Youga - 2 - can't even think of anything to justify this score
Hudson - 6 - Defensively sound, poor distribution and I still think he lacks leadership
    Ward - 6 - solid
Soares - 4 - did not look interested
Bailey - 8 - nice goal and plenty of effort
Racon - 6 - started quite well but lost interest in the second half
Spring - 4 - game completely passed him by
Jonjo - 8 - for effort, he will have better games for us though I am sure
Dickson - 2 - looked like a lower non league player with no ability
Sam, Ambrose & Burton had no impact whatsoever when they came on.

Very dissapointed that in a must win game so many players did not seem up for the fight, Doncaster looked an excellent footballing team but we did not get in amongst them enough and let them have far too much space on the ball. I actually think managers should take a leaf out of Curbs book - he always used to match the formation of the opposing team. Doncaster had 2 wingers who stayed well wide and that created massive space when they had the ball which we never closed down.

League 1 here we come and out of the players above, I would only really bothered about seeing Elliott, Bailey, Racon & Jonjo be there with us.
  • I thought Burton looked good when he came on-for all his faults, he can hold up the ball up better than any of our other strikers.

Also, go easy on Dickson, he had a bad game but he was a hero two weeks ago. Everyone's so reactionary these days; you're either brilliant or shit with no middle ground. Given the goals he scored for Gillingham in league one, and the fact that Gray, Kandol and Toddy are off in the summer, he'll be in the starting XI next season so I fancy him to come good with a run in the team and i hope he gets that from now until the end of the season.
  • Dickson wasn't a hero two weeks ago. He hasn't scored or looked like scoring.

There was a lot of fuss made, on a thread on this forum, about him being given a chance in the side. That's all.

I thought he was terrible tonight and that's not a reactionary comment. I was embarrassed to watch him.

  • Of everything that was good on Saturday, tonight proved why we ware going down. With a few exceptions we are not good enough and a team/club that is constantly changing personal is no way to stop this rot.

When you see a club like Doncaster who a few year sago were having stands burnt down by Chairman to claim the insurance money, you can at least see how to rebuild a club!
  • I just can't agree with the comments about the players not caring or trying.

We are just not good enough.

Defence was ok most of the time - though Youga shows no composure when the ball comes anywhere near him most of the time.

Midfield - Spring as I said in another thread is tidy, he won't do much wrong but he won't do a lot right either. Soares didn't really seem to get involved. Bailey had a good game apart from the penalty, Racon was ok but has played better.

Shelvey needs better players around him for him.

Dickson like I said in another thread, and someone said here, you can see why he wasn't in the team all this time, and that he was a non-league striker. I wanted to see him get a chance like most did, but only really because we were desperate, and he's probably the closest we have to a natural goalscorer. He has big weaknesses in his game for this level of football. I've seen signs of it before, but he had a player in Kandol he could link up with. When the long balls came up, there was no one to win them, so Dickson could only run onto balls over the top from Shelvey, and it wasn't often he had the chance to do that.

I wouldnt call him a hero but when he has played in a 442 formation he has forced the opposing defence to sit further back thus we are playing more attacking football 15 yards further up the pitch.

Pardky showed his lack of ambition and played it safe with an 'away team' formation and we were shite pumping the ball in the air and chasing the shadows of a decent footballing team. tonight showed that he is utterly incompetent as a manager in this league. Yes he had me fooled for a couple of games against some shit teams, but tonight when we came up against another decent side like any other team who have come here and passed the ball to feet he has been found out yet again.

Our so called captain is a complete embarrassment, had absolutly no pace at all, and never once saw him trying to inspire any other player (unless you call lumping the ball up the field in an "AVIT" style an inspiration)!

No chance of staying up now, get rid of all loanees, get rid of parky, put kins in charge, start all of our own players inc dickson and mootoo till the end of the season and decide who we want to keep for league one!
  • Thing is, Dickson actually looks like he cares, you can see the frustration in himself when he can't control it. But caring isn't always enough. He looked very amateur tonight.

They were all trying out there, including Dickson, but at times he lacks that ability with the ball, or the decision making and I agree it showed. Hard to believe there were people who seriously thought he was a new Ian Wright and would one day play in the Prem.
