2007/08 and 2008/9 season DVDs - your support needed

The subject of highlights/goals DVDs for last season and this has come up on this forum and elsewhere over the last nine months or so - both from people who would like to continue their long-running collection and from people who were sceptical about the potential sales.

As the person who has overseen the producttion of all the DVDs and VHS tapes going back to the late 1990s, I would like to see the sequence continued. There is a video record of every season back to 1986/87, at least as far as home goals is concerned, and some of those seasons were no worse than the 07/08 campaign in terms of results.

Having the best access to the cost information, I believe we could have produced a viable compilation of 07/08 and sold it at a small profit. However this was not the decision made and in the context that we did not do 07/08 it is highly unlikely that the club will commit to doing a standalone 08/09 compilation if we are relegated.

I also believe that anything we produce has to be done to a certain standard, given the quality of productions during the PL seasons. There are already issues arising from the reduced number of cameras used in the FL, but as this is the material used by Sky/ITV it is still of an acceptable standard.

I accept that many people will find the idea of a compilation from this season daft, but that's fine as they don't need to buy it. What we need to understand is how many people would support a project that rescues the highlights of both seasons and enables us to put them in a suitable format for those who do want them.

My idea is that we do this by offering people the chance to pay perhaps £20 up front for their copy with the carrot that they get their name and details (i.e. Bert Bloggs, Eltham, fan since 1928) in the credits, rather as we did with the book subscriptions back in the early 1990s.

If we could get a pot of, say, £6k-£7k together on that basis then the club would be able to proceed in the knowledge that people wanted it and it would not lose money, taking into account that some copies would also be sold over the counter. The more money up front, the more extras we would be able to provide.

I am not asking for any financial commitment at this point. It would just be helpful to know how many people on here would be interested on the basis I have set out above. If you don't like the idea then that's not a problem and I know a majority of fans won't, but it's not those views that I really need.

Finally, for various reasons to do with rights this is likely to be the last chance we have to produce an 07/08 compilation. It's not likely to be something we can revive as a three-season compilation if we go down and come back up next year.

Anyone want to register their support for this project? And how much would you pay if so?

  • Hi Airman Brown - I met with the club pon this very matter above - and it can be produced for less than £6-7k and the club were favourable and didn't get back - I was also going to expand the distribution outside of CAFC.co.uk and the Club Shop - but alas no reply.

They obviously have other fish to fry at the moment, and it's a shame as I was going to do it as a Vanity Project ....

    Good idea.

put me down for one at £20 and my brother Alex for the same.

Not to concerned with production quality. ITV/Sky clips would be fine.

Rick, do you want me to send this out to the Bromley Mailing list? if so what address should they respond to?
  • I'd be interested and would be willing to pay £18-20.
  • Already passed a duplicating service details to the club who despite the fact his a mate is very good and well priced and willing to help and do extra good rates

Thanks for the above but to be clear it's not the duplication that's the issue. The main costs are in collating the material and editing it together plus any extra filming (which we don't need to do for this project) and potentially a professional voiceover to make it hang together. The Sky/ITV clips are mostly what exists however we did it, because they are what is recorded by the club's contractor, but we have to track them down - especially the away games - in an appropriate format before we can even start the editing process. And the quality of the latter is absolutely fundamental. We had a very bad experience with a previous VHS, as some of you will remember, and I am anxious not to go down that route again.
  • Yep.

    £15- £20.
  • yep last season will be a humdinger of a season compared to this and the foreseeable future ;-(

    i'll be in for one
  • Hi Rick

No problem! I am happy to help you with the distribution outside of the channels currently restricted to.

    Best
    Spencer

  • I did mention about the review couple of months ago pleased that it might be coming out
  • i actually want to forget the last 2 seasons ;-(
  • Not for me thanks - would rather buy a Steven Segal DVD (but nolly has already snapped up the lot)
  • I've always bought them, still have the Finches ones,so yes put me down for £19.99. Could always have brian Cole as the professional voice over ...... :-)
  • Yes, I'd stump up the £20, Put me down.
  • Yes please, used to get them from Finches too: got to keep the collection going!
  • And Me.
  • Count me in.
  • Count me in Rick. I feel very strongly that, for better or for worse, our tradition of producing a historical record continues and if it's the difference between it happening and not and so long as the production standard is good, £20 is no problem with me.

Assuming we are going down (sorry to be negative but that's the way I feel) combining this and last season together as a kind of 'the championship years' compilation works quite well. If nothing else it will serve as a reminder in years to come of how the good times can unravel so fast.
  • As usual, anything to do with CAFC and the answer is Yes.
Count me in Mr.E, have to keep "the Collection" going !!

  • Would consider it, as long as it doesn't contain any interviews with Pardew - afraid I'd break the plasma telly by chucking something at it in that case...
  • Make that two of each season for me and a friend of mine
  • I'd take 2
  • [cite]Posted By: Airman Brown[/cite]and potentially a professional voiceover

Don't worry dude, i'll do the voiceover!! Look no further! I love talking, am good at it, love the sound of my own voice, love Charlton, perfect!!

    All those in favour........
  • I'll sit on the fence for that one Ol !!
  • Important to record the history of the Club.

My one disappointment with the otherwise superb Centenary DVDs was the lack of sixties footage. For that reason if no other stick me down for £20.
  • I am in for one for £20
  • Yes would be happy to stump up £20.
  • Mr Brown,
Any news on this project Sir ?

Thanks to everyone who has replied.

I've spoken to Steve Waggott and we've agreed there has been enough interest to take this to the next stage, which is to collect cash and see how much we can raise. There will be a short piece in Saturday's programme and then something on the official website/Bulletin next week. In the meantime, we've just got to work out the best way of doing it, so that people can pay online as well over the phone and if necessary by post.

I understand a few people have asked in the Superstore about it. We will try to make forms available through the shops at The Valley and Bexleyheath, but it's not really a retail project at this stage, so please don't expect any answers from that quarter for the time being.

We can't produce the DVD until the summer in any event, so there is no early closing date for contributions but we will probably need to make a judgement in about a month's time as to whether enough has come in to start work.
