Cut Backs

edited February 2009 in General Charlton
I know things are tight but it’s starting to get a bit extreme to me.

Firstly I've heard (though this may be a Chinese whisper for the reason) to save money the club have sold all there gym equipment at the training ground and now have a corporate membership at David Lloyd in Dartford.

Secondly I've just spoke to the club shop and they, for the foreseeable future, have stop producing season review DVD’s as they can't afford to and the minimum they can order is 5000 and they won't sell them. Well surely they can place a smaller order and if not there must be at least 5000 Addicks out there who would want a record of last season just for posterity. There were some memorable moments from last season the double over the scum, Saints away in the last minute for example.

  • Mate, the club has used the gym at Dartford for a few years now, and the decision to stop the DVD was over a year i believe.

Would suspect the selling gym stuff is not true.
  • The thought of watching highlights of last season or this season has just made me twitch!!
  • Come on now has there been enough 'highlights' in the last 2 seasons to fill a DVD?!

We are where we are but don't need reminding of the fact!!

A friend of mine who works up there says he see's the first team up there headed by Kinsella at least once a week doing a full 2 hour circuit. They had used it before but only in the summer for pre season. And with the DvD's surely they could sell 5,000? All fans should remember the good seasons as well as the bad and as I said last and even this season hasn't been all bad.

  • so let me get this straight they are no longer producing any season dvds going forward?

At the moment, most of our games are convered by only one TV camera up in the roof of the east stand - there simply isn't the quality of footage/angles etc. available to make a product people would be willing to pay for.
  • "Double over the scum"? what?

Thing is though, people were prepared to pay for a rubbish product in the past. Having paid to watch it live (and then suffered it) few people would be prepared to pay to watch it again when the qualities poor as well.

I believe there are specialist websites out there for people with those sort of 'tendancies'...

  • Chinese Whispers indeed.

The club have used the David Lloyd place for years.

There was a lot of gym equipment moved out of the Valley as well but that was the Greenwich Council Gym that has moved to the new site on the old Greenwich Hospital development.

No idea if the gym equipment from the training ground has been sold but it's a small gym and you wouldn't get a squad of 20 guys in there at the same time from what I remember.
  • I've heard that the club are not providing the players with refreshments when they go to away games. Apparently they have to bring their own packed lunch.

    LOL, as if.

On the DVD I can see the logic but I'm surprised at the 5000 minimum. I wonder if that is as much about the quality of the footage, editing, voice over, packaging etc and not wanting to sell what they see as a poor quality effort for which they will then be mercilessly slagged off by our fans

Would we sell 5000. That is a hell of a lot with a 15000 ST base given that many of those ST live in the same households and nowhere near all would by.

If anyone has a bootleg DVD of last season I'd be happy to buy one (sorry Mike R but there you go.)
  • perhaps they should put the dvd production out to tender?
  • razil's right: I remember going over to a sports shop in Forest Hill in the late '80s to buy match videos that seem to have been filmed by someone with the camera hidden in their inside coat pocket. They were black and white and had no commentary, but the March tribe still watched and enjoyed them (especially the Jim Melrose hat-trick v. Everton). I wonder what happened to them, must ask Mrs.M and will report on other thread if they've been 're-cycled'.

Also heard this, all have to chip in for the half time oranges now, they take it in turns to pre cut them aswel
  • I have heard that they take it in turns to take the match day kit home after each game to wash and iron
  • I heard that we sold John Fortune's crutches on ebay and we're making him hobble round with a big stick.

There's a gym at Sparrows Lane and I kind of doubt they've sold the gear, looney rumour.

What is the problem with the season end DVD. On the grounds that we're in our third horrible season it's a good bet that nobody will want to buy one, so not producing a minimum run of 5000 seems sensible. If they produced the vids and sold about 7 we'd be slating them for spunking money.

If you want to remember this season in years to come I suggest you just hurl a lump of medium consistency shite at square of card and watch it slowly ooze down before falling off. It's abstract, but it'll capture the true wonder of 08/09 and save you 12.99.

    Thank me later.

Greenwich Council closed the gym at The Valley to fund a council tax freeze last year, without plans to replace it. (The Greenwich District Hospital site will, by the time it opens in 2054, replace The Arches.)
  • I've just heard that ZZ isn't actually injured - the club is using him as a chef on matchdays like Brian Potter did in Phoenix Nights.

    CHIPS IN A WOK!?!?!?!?!?

If this is true, it's mental. He's one of our best midfielders. Surely we'd be better off getting a proper cook.

would you want one of this season !
  • The latest rumour I head it that at autograph signings the players are only allowed to sign their first name, it saves the ink!! Alledgedly!
  • ah, this is the real reason that moo2 isn't playing. they can't afford to print his name on the back of his shirt.
  • Pre match nerves are also becoming an issue as they have been restricted to just three sheets....

Cue somebody to throw a David Whyte and refuse to pay for the post match fish and chips!
