[cite]Posted By: Carter[/cite]Personally I think Cottrell shit out because at the time when he was knocking on the door we had the England right back and a few other international footballers who would drop in. If he and Fuller and Campbell-ryce had been where they were then when we are where we are now then they would be more than involved. However football is about opinions and a lot of ifs and buts
Yeah no doubt if some of the players we've let go were coming through now they would have got a chance. Clark and Stavrinou might have not got contracts if we were still in the Prem.
Thinking about this more, is some of this related to finances? With Solly already a pro at right back, Clark going pro at left back, Long would find it hard to break through. Maybe they feel it wouldn't be worth the clubs time and money on a player that would be 4th or 5th choice in his position. Might be different if we didn't have any financial problems.
Same thing with Mikkel Jensen. We already have Shelvey (well, hopefully), Wright, Arter and Yussuff. Although he was probably talented and not far behind them, he was never going to get a chance ahead of all of them.
Went to school with both Jack Clarke and Sam Long and am really suprised that Jack got the pro deal and not Sam, if you'd of told me that 2 years ago i'd of laughed. good luck to Jack though he's always been a good player with a good left foot. Feel sorry for Sam though supports Charlton and has done well enough to earn a pro.
[cite]Posted By: tricky[/cite]Slightly disappointed that Sam Long will be released as I liked him whenever I saw him, but bow to the superior knowledge of Gritt and the coaches etc.
Yeah, look where the 'superior knowledge' of our coaches have got us. They are as fallible, unconsciously biased, and guessing in the dark, as the rest of humanity. Hence the balls-ups that we see in virtually every field of human endeavour. The famous phrase from Hollywood applies widely - "Nobody knows anything". If Stavrinou makes it, I will eat a CAFC burger (much more difficult to digest than my hat).
LOL funniest post ever. That Steve Gritt, what a no nothing idiot he is :- (

Yeah, but coming from the person who trusted the captain on the Titanic ;-) All I'm saying, Henry, is that many years of experience have taught me to be very cynical about so called experts - show me someone who isn't infallible. In our recent history Ian Dowie was the expert. So was Pardew. And if you think Steve Gritt is incapable of making mistakes, you're deluded.
As you say no one is infallible including Steve Gritt. "put not your faith in Princess and Kings" is a good motto.
I never said Gritt was infalliable and I doubt very much he would ever claim that for himself. I see that you have tried to suggest that that is what I think (I don't) so am deluded. Rather weak conclusion to draw as it is based on something I never said or implied.
If however, as you stated, you believe that Steve Gritt is "guessing in the dark" and "know's nothing" then you really need to back that up with some evidence.
I would say that the number of academy players who are now in the first time squad and the very few players from the academy who have been let go but are now playing at a higher level than our first team suggests that Gritt and his colleagues have got it right more often than not.
of those released I'm a bit disappointed that Ben Godfrey has been. Whenever I have seen him he's looked pretty decent and two-footed too. I would have persevered with him.
".........there were some tough decisions to be made as some of them were very close to getting a deal but we just felt we needed players that would be pushing for the first team next year."
So basically, the club are only wanting to keep young Pro's that can be ready to play some part in the 1st team next season. Everybody else is being cleared out.

I think that's fair based on where we are at the moment, although a bit harsh on the almost player, who may be able to develop with another year.
On the grit and determination versus skill debate. Rob Lee and Mark Stuart are classic example, IMO, Mark Stuart was a far more gifted player than Rob Lee but did not apply himself, preferring to party, but became a lower league journeyman. Lee was a grafter and made it to England honours.
I agree it's fair enough in our situation. If they prove us wrong it won't be for another 2 or 3 years at least, and I doubt most of them will.
It happened last year, though they weren't youth players, when Pardew released Dorian Smith and Paulo Monteiro. He said didn't keep them as he couldn't see them breaking into the first team this season.
