Great news. I knew he'd applied, as did a few other "Charlton" people but what is important, IMHO, is that he isn't just a name but has been coaching at Walsal, currently top of Div 3, doing his badges and planning for a career in coaching

I know that a lot of people have been slagging off the board about the backroom set up and the idea of stability and that's an opinion they are entiltled to but this is what stability and having a proper long term set up is all about. Having people who understand the club and it's history (who are part of its history!) and who want to be at Charlton because of who we are.
  • sentimentality is nice, but don't let it disguise the fact that what we need is someone who is talented and good at their job.

I'm pretty confident Kins will tick both categories.
  • At least we'll have some passion on the bench - just need it on the pitch now.

.....and can knit scarfs and hats and make decent hot drinks that are suitable for the vermos flask.

Although I am a great fan of Kins but I dont really go for the sentimentality bit that we should take them on because they know the club. If we want to move onwards and upwards, we have to try and slip that cosy cardigan off and go with the times - I mean that in regards to tactics and a manager that will attract the better class players.

PS: tried to quote AFKA but not sure how to do it.

I got the text whilst driving and had almost exactly the same thought AFKA-

If he coaches in a similar manner to how he played he'll fire things up with the yoof, and if we needed reminding about how important it is-just look at how Lloyd Sam played last night

I think i've now sussed it out how to do the quote thingy - sorry if Ive interupted the discussion.
  • Well he's obviously doing something right at Walsall as both a player and member of the coaching staff. They're currently 9 points clear at the top of league 2.
  • I agree about the sentimentaility but as I said he's already been coaching at a level where he will have had nothing like the resources, human and physical, to work with and is working on his badges. This isn't jobs for the boys although his Charlton connections would have been a factor.
  • I think getting a "charlton" name was important, I think that could have been one of Dowie's biggest problems. The board, management and coaching staff has all been in place a long time and it probably was a constant case of "that's not the way we do it here" for Dowie to fight against. Whether he should have been fighting against it or not is probably the question that started the whole review process.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it. On the face of it i think its a decent move.

But playing devils advocate, we already have a very inexperienced managerial team. To me there is a decent arguement that the third person of the trio should of brought a bit more experience to the table than someone 'working on his badges'.

Is that a harsh view ? Am i expecting too much ?

The upside is i think we have a real future manager on our hands.
  • Great news...I mentioned Kins would compliment Reed & Robson, the latter two come over as being nice guys, nothing wrong in that - we need someone in the coaching set up who understands the club and is a bit more assertive in his style.
  • FANTASTIC !! I think this is exactly what we need.

Yep, would that person settle for being third in charge?

Kinsella is a perfect fit, his coaching experience has been lower league (no disrespect to Wallsall) so this is a step up for him, yet he has experience of coaching, which is what we require, and is not making the move straight from the playing staff to a coaching job.

The guy is a legend at the club and young players will respect what he's done. In time as he gets his badges he can move up.
  • From the OS:

He's playing one last game for the Saddlers this Saturday...

"He will officially hang up his boots after the match, and start his new role on Monday - with a first reserve fixture in charge the following day, at Gravesend & Northfleet FC against West Ham United."

I would love to see him play one last time...I guess his knees have finally given out and time to start the second part of his career.

    Fair point BFR.

Personally, i thought if they were going to go down the keeping it Charlton route, Gritty would of been a best fit. Experienced, passionate, and Charlton to a core. But i'm more than happy with Kinny back.

Lennie was chatting about a publicity camapign, to help us out, at ctiy addicks the other week... to boost morale/awareness... You can see already by bringing a hero back into the fold has already got the fans excited.......
  • Ahh, I see what you're getting at.
  • all smoke and mirrors.
  • I love a bit of magic....

    ;)
  • Kinsella is an absolute legend end of !! - one of my all time favourite charlton players...if he can install in the current squad half the 'heart' he had then I'll be happy...as someone said, he's been coaching for a while and Wallsall are doing well so he's obviously been doing something right !

This is a fantastic move in my opinion

Introduce him back to the crowd 5 mins before the Liverpool game and that will be enough to get the ground rocking !!, I wanna see that clenched fist salute to the covered end again.
