Full Backs

edited January 2009 in General Charlton
I went to the game on Saturday. I must say that Basey is not a player for this level he was terrible, from the off you could see that they had done there homework as they always had two players pushing on Basey and he was making mistakes left right and centre. What was he doing on their second goal on the post? He gave the ball away countless times along with a pen. I would say watching that I would even have Youga back in the team!

Then onto Murty, I am sorry but he is also very slow and is off the pace massively. Please send him back as he is an utter waste of money.

Both of our full backs were terrible today.

So from getting up at five, setting off at six getting a train from Halifax to Leeds, then Leeds to shef. I had to sit and watch that dross. I had two friends with me one Chelsea and one Arsenal (Poor lads) they said that the standard of football they had to watch was awful and if they had to endure it every week then they would top themselves. One thing that they both said that was true is we are not doing the basics, we are not man marking, not playing the easy ball. Countless times we had a decent move broken down where we opted not to play the easy ball!

May I also add that at half time 2-0 down you could see that we needed two up front, Gray is slow and is a player that likes it into his feet to lay it off. All we did was pump the ball up time and time again to Gray for their defenders to lap it up. Parky's subs and timing today was Pardewesk!

We need a new striker NOW! A fast pacey man is what is needed.

  • Murty is yet another pointless loan signing. Unfit, needs match practice and is not the player he once was. I'd imagine he is on a decent wage at Reading and we must be paying quite a bit of that while he is here.

We didn't bring on another striker till we were 3-0 down did we?

Pardky is hopeless, I said he would be nothing but a disaster and unfortunately he hasn't proved me wrong.
  • Said after the Forest game that Murty looked slow, very short of match sharpness and was at least partly to blame for their first goal. Plus his delivery in the second-half as we pushed forward was pish poor.

Agree about Murty, just not needed. Nothing for us to gain when a player is here to get fit, he might be a better defender than Moutaouakil, but not by enough to make up for a lack of pace and fitness.

Basey isn't good enough to even stand out in League One next season unfortunately.
  • Don't knock a Charlton youngster!

Even if he is fat, slow and not good enough for the side bottom of the table.

    You'll get into trouble ...

Oi Leave It alright he is big boned... ;o)

he hasn't had the fortune of a good player to learn from since Thatcher and Powell left - When they were here he played well and was a smaller boned.

We sent him to help Millwall get promoted.
  • The one thing I would say in Basey's defence is he had zero protection from Soares who was clearly being played totally out of position. Basey still had a mare though and always will against a fast winger. He has some talents but if he's going to carve out a career outside the lower leagues I think he needs to concentrate on midfield and try and turn himself into a poor mans Gareth Barry (who also started out as a defender).
  • Would Michael Gray (one of my favourite players never to have played for us for obvious reasons) not have been a good signing?

Despite being 34 I don't think it's because he's playing badly that Wolves were prepared to let him go to Sheffield Wednesday as these are the results of games he's played in this season:

    Wolves 3-2 Accrington 0
    Rotherham 0-0 Wolves
    Wolves 5-1 Nottm Forest
    Charlton 1-3 Wolves
    Wolves 2-1 C Palace 0
    Wolves 2-0 Bristol C 0
    Watford 2-3 Wolves 1
    Cardiff 1-2 Wolves
    Wolves 2-0 Blackpool
    Wolves 1-1 Birmingham
    Ipswich 1-1 Sheff Wed
    Sheff Wed 4-1 Charlton

    Played 12 Won 9 Drawn 3 Lost 0
Goals: 1 Yellow cards: 0 Red Cards: 0

He's been playing left midfield as well as full back but, as we're lacking in both positions, would have been a decent signing imho.
  • Said it before. We don`t have a decent full back at the club.

  • I agree Gray would've been a good signing but when he went to Sheff Weds, we already had McEveley who has obviously since got injured.
  • From seeing the goals on the championship, I thought that Hudson, once again looked culpable for at least one of them

Lost Tudgay for the second and gave the ball straight to a Sheff Weds player with a poor headed clearance for the third. I'm not as damning of Hudson as many I've heard/read, particularly on here, but he didn't have a good one at all on Saturday and he's certainly not as dominant in the air as Pardew led us to believe he was.
  • Exiled suggested Basey should ''try and turn himself into a poor mans Gareth Barry''.

Are you sure you don't mean Gareth Bale, who created a Charltonesque statistic yesterday - his 21st appearance in a Spurs shirt without playing in a winning side !

I was laughed at for this suggestion. Hadn't thought of the Barry comparison to back it up to be fair, but sweet passing ability plus lack of pace would seem to equal midfield to me.
  • All of us on Fans have been saying for ages that Basey should be playing Left midfield or the holding central midfield role. He has talent with a good left foot a similar situation with Moo2 who I think would make a better Right winger than Right back but for some reason our management will not try it, what a surprise LOL!!
