The Howard was ok...... before the sheff united game, it is opposite the station, they wasnt doing food though. There was a massive crownd of five addicks in there for that game, maybe more this time ! Im wondering wether I should drive up to hillsborough or park the bramall lane side and get the tram. Any pubs nearer hillsborough folks would recommend ?
Last time i was there - 3-0 defeat in 98 - we drank in this dive of an old boozer just up the road from the stadium, sawdust floor, no furniture & dripping sandwiches for sale on the bar.......
like something from the 70s - the 1870s - made The (late) Old Friends in Greenwich look like the cocktail bar at The Ritz
The 2 pubs i've listed below (Graduate and The Monk) operate a card system (about £1 or £2 behind the bar) but it saves you nearly a quid a drink so just buy one and use it to buy everyone's drinks to get your money's worth l.o.l
The Howard is a bit crap to be honest, you could head up to The Graduate (£1.95 for Strongbow or Fosters or a 4 pint jug of Carling for I think £6).
Walk past the Howard on your left and up the hill to a dual carraigeway, cross this and to the right you will see Surrey Street and The Graduate is on your left up there or a bit further on you'll come to a little Square which has The Monk pub (another cheap one) or Ruskins which is a bit more pricey. If you get lost just ask for The Crucible Theartre as that's in this Square too.
My suggestion though is up to Division Street or West Street like I said and then you can get the tram through to Hillsborough (You need the tram going to Middlewood and these are every 20 minutes I think and will take about 20 minutes to reach Hillsborough)
Anyway, when you do get to Hillsborough be nice to the turnstile operator because it might be me :-)
With regards selling out or sectioning part of the away stand to accommodate some home fans I can assure you this won't happen and speaking to the ticket office at Hillsborough today the last report said Charlton had sold around 550 leaving space for another 3,000+

The train I hope I can catch gets in at 14:20.
Bollocks.
you should be alright, theres a tram stop connected to the train station and theyre every 5 minutes at that time of day
[cite]Posted By: Terry Naylor[/cite]The Stone house is a good boozer if you don't mind students?
If you get chatting to one of the un-washed like we did last time they let you use their student card to get 50% of any drink!
It might have changed now what with the credit crunch?
the stonehouse has been knocked down, theres an ok one called the museum about 50 yards from there and near a tram stop, does real ales. The New Barrack Tavern in hillsborough or the Hillsborough Hotel are worth a visit for those wanting to try decent beers at cheapish prices
wouldnt bother with any pubs in hillsbough close to the ground as dont think theyd be that friendly. i live about a mile from ground. as mentioned the 'new barrack tavern' - penistone road (if in car)and the 'hillsborugh hotel' - langsett road (if on tram) are ok if you like real ale type venues.
for the annoracs as mentioned the worlds oldest ground 'Sandygate' (sandygate road) where Hallam FC play has a nice pub bang opposite called 'the plough'. no problems with football fans as its 3 miles from ground in a very nice suburb. http://www.hallamfc.net/ http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=14vEGYAz3F4&feature=related
the ground is worth a visit (i used to be a season ticket holder in mid eighties) and a nice pub!! 15 minutes drive from hillsborough. not really for those on public transport as a bit of a pain on public transport.
this may be useful for some. tram is way quicker than buses and get a day saver as cheaper than two singles depending on where you get on. train station walk out of station and turn right. follow the road down to the roundabout with the 'big leisure centre on your left. follow the road left up the hill (side of leisure centre) you can see the tram track over head joining the street. tram stop is about 150 metres up road in front of you. therse a pub at tram stop 'bankers draft' may be ok. normal city centre pub (big on two floors)
also for those coming by car, there is the option to park at the station at Meadowhall shopping centre behind meadowhall shopping centre or in the centres car parks and get a tram all the way to the ground and back. a dayrider ticket is £3.50 and all parking is free. meadowhall centre is a huge shopping mall 200+ shops if you're killing time. im half tempted. tomorrow is more important.
No idea on pubs, will probably be one when we get out of the station before getting the tram...
This is the worst planned journey I'll have ever taken !
its a f##ker, but we're needed up there! Plus its only £10 to get in.
About 30 minutes by tram. Hillsborough, is oop hill out of the city centre, unlike United which is walkable from the station.
The train I hope I can catch gets in at 14:20.
Bollocks.
about an hour solid walking or 20 minutes on the tram so i'm told...
I think it was £25 for a return, booked in December.
Might have to leave london at 6 to make sure
You'll be fine....
tomorrow is a big game.
the players need every bit of help they can get.
its only 2 hours on the train.
Go on, you know you want to.
