Skysports.com understand Charlton are on the verge of signing of Senegal defender Souleymane Diawara.

The Sochaux defender has long been linked with a move to England with the likes of Portsmouth and Newcastle both credited with an interest in the towering defender.

Charlton have been watching developments at Sochaux and are ready to steal a march on their rivals by luring Diawara to The Valley.

Addicks boss Iain Dowie is keen to bolster his defence after seeing it concede six goals in the first three games of the season.

Sochaux were hoping to keep Diawara at the club, but they knew they were facing a losing battle to keep hold of the African.

Charlton have held talks with Diawara after agreeing a fee with Sochaux and the player's agent Lee Anderson confirmed a deal was close to being completed.

"Souleymane is going to Charlton as both clubs have agreed a fee," Anderson told skysports.com.

"He has had talks and passed his medical at the club.

"Souleymane has agreed a three-year deal and he should complete the formalities of the deal soon."
