Parky

Generally I like the bloke and he speaks a lot of sense, however is he beginning to go down the Pardew 'spin route'?

O/S: Parky: "The fans care but no-one cares more than me and the players; it's our livelihoods"

Sorry but that is bullshit. If we go down this year the vast bulk of these players will bugger off to another club and never look back. Was Ambrose performance today that of a player who 'cares'.

I and many other fans on the other hand will still be here next season paying money to watch my team play in Tier 3, which for me will be the first time at that level having been going for 'only' 25 years.

Comments

  • Last game that we played in the third tier was on 2nd May 1981 and a 2-1 victory against Gillingham at The Valley.
  • Was only 4 at the time, and didn't go to my first game till I was 7....was a glory hunter you see!

Ambrose is never going to be a player that does a lot of closing down, 'getting stuck in', throwing himself into tackles.

It's a bit like the thing with Berbatov, turns out he did more running than Rooney in a recent match, but he's constantly being called a lazy player. He might not close down the opposition non stop, but he's probably making runs off the ball all the time and things like that which don't get noticed.

Though I have given up on him, he just doesn't play to his ability often enough, doesn't seem to have the confidence to do it. We need more reliable players in, and players like Ambrose out.

Other than Jonjo he came nearest to scoring.

Credit to Smith for the save because Ambrose caught it well.

He is frustrating though (Ambrose not Jonjo!).
  • Going back to Parky's original quote : "The fans care but no-one cares more than me and the players; it's our livelihoods".

He said it with the best of intentions and for the right motives, so it's not worth making a big issue out of it. But as Valleyman points out, it's total bloody nonsense.

So the loan players - or even our 'own' come to that - care more than the fans? Yes, it's their livelihood - this week. But it won't be next week or the week after or next season when they're sold or their loan period comes to an end. They'll go off and be paid by someone else to show how much they ''care'' for a quite different team.

Long after every single player currently picking up a wage to wear our shirt is gone, we, the Charlton fans will still be here, whatever division we're in. Sometimes those who make a 'livelihood' out of football tend to overlook that...
  • ' it's our livelihoods'...errrm paid for by fans who buy tickets, merchandise, TV subscriptions, and rich benefactors who pump money in (thank god) to bask in the associated glory.....of which there is none at all at the moment at Charlton. Players will chase the money, I have said before that I believe Philip Parkinson would have taken the first credible job offer he got whilst at Charlton under Alan Pardew, and players chase the money...errrm Scott Parker anybody?
No I'm sorry Mr Parkinson there are thousands who care a LOT more than you do...a lot more.
Let me suggest to you Mr Parkinson that you were hoping against hope that the match today could have been called off because of the cold weather, and you had that in your mind throughout training this week, and as a result the players weren't prepared with enough edge, and desire, and CARE to win, to justify their livelihoods.
Mr Parkinson, I reckon any fan in the stadium today could have done as well as you have as manager....AND WOULD HAVE DONE IT FOR FREE. I suggest Philip that you get in your car, and look at every team we are about to play for weaknesses, you train the players more, you try harder....because what you are doing at the moment isn't working. Kevin Keegan quit as England manager because he admitted he had traveled a bridge too far, do you think you can cope Mr Parkinson, or will you hand over to me, or ten thousand other Charlton fans who could pick the team with a pin, and still achieve the same results FOR FREE (i.e it wouldn't be their livelihood, it would be their love, their passion)?
  • Parky, that's eaiser to say when you got sacked from your last job with £250K in your pocket.

Ambrose did that in his very first game for us - 2 footed tackle and got sent off against Sunderland. He hasn't bothered since....

I'm amazed that this quote hasn't got more of a reaction to be honest. To suggest the players care more than us is ludicrous to be honest. Some are loanees and won't be here in a month let alone the end of the season, others won't be bothered as their contacts are up in June and as is the way these days will walk off to a contract elsewhere and a nice signing on fee, the others will try to get a move as they don't want to play in League 1. Plus from their performances it doesn't look like they care does it ?
  • dont know how to do the linky thing but there was a fair few of us fuming with rthe comment on a thread started by Telinoz titled fear ye not

    i'll look that up then
  • it was a ludicrous thing to say. 21000 of us just showed up in sub-zero temperatures to watch the worst Charlton team most of us can remember, who haven't won for 3 months. Yet the team barely shows up beyond the first half hour and who among them have earned their wages (Jonjo excepted)?

and he wouldnt be on much as a YT would he the senior pros should be embarresd

those comments from parky have really fecking rattled my cage today
  • Parky is still relying on loan players and ignoring proven goal-scorers for the un-prolific Burton or Gray with an 18 yo rookie as back-up. Only Shelvey from our kids is getting a look in. His 1st priority on Jan 1st should have been to get in two PERMANENT centre-backs. Even if he keeps us up I have no confidence in him.
  • Stupid comment from Parky, many of us have supported the club through thick and thin over the years and will continue to do so no matter what division they are in, where will the manager and players be? clear off at the first better opportunity. The days when the majority of players cared about a team more than themselves are long gone!
  • To be fair to Parky, I think it just came out wrong.

HIs motives were innocent and his intentions good : he was simply trying to reassure the fans that he cares and the players care and they are hurting, too.

I admit that when you analyse his exact words, what he said is nonsense. But I really don't think he meant to belittle how much the fans care...

A much fairer criticism to make at him is that his players have yet to show us how much they care where it matters - on the pitch.
  • It's not that stupid though - his future financial well-being may well rely on doing this job well. That doesn't apply to us fans. In fact a lot of fans stopped bothering to come as the going gets tough (not that I'm blaming them, really), so I can understand what he's saying.

And we were those Fads 'hats' - you remember?
  • I think the comment upset me mostly because loyal lowly paid Valley staff will be losing their jobs as the board starts to lower costs. The players and managers can swan off to new highly paid contracts, but Valley staff will be dumped on the unemployment register at a very bad time. They've worked hard and loyally and will get s*d all, whereas players can literally do nothing and pick up thousands a week.
