Unsung Charlton heroes.....

  • Stuart Balmer for me - always thought he was a bit unfortunate to have Chapple and then Youds picked ahead of him in the Play-Off season. Now coaches at St Mirren.
  • Mark Stuart, great little player with a big bubble perm, commitment and goals and I remember even then a pocket of Charlton fans who gave him stick, some people are never satisfied! That goal at Old Trafford in '86. I'd love a Mark Stuart now.

Never rocked my boat and I thought he was pretty average.
  • Peter Shirtliff........A born leader

My Dad called him The Pigeon because of his diving skills
  • See comments about Mark Stuart and his rather good goal-scoring record higher up this thread from Sailor Browneye, me and March 51..
  • Reidy, thommo and johnny h were all great names but Andy Peake was another "no frills" kind of guy and I rates him ....and John Pearson. Cheap but very effective at the time
  • Thanks Nigel, March51 for the research. I'm afraid I've left my handbook at home today too, the combination of my hip flask, tobacco pouch, Racing Post and my binoculars (the local sixth form college girl's lacrosse team play on Friday's) meant I had to sadly leave it at Chez Browneye...

So if I think of anyone from the murky past, I'd appreciate the free research again!!!

    Peake's free-kicks were certainly no frills ;-)

Sweaty Balmer, Steve Thompson & Eddie Youds - what I'd do for a centre-half like one of those three in our side right now.

Couple of other names: Hugh McAuley & Martin Robinson. John Pearson was awesome that year we went up.

Ah Stuart Balmer. I remember there being a picture of him on the front of one of the editions of VOTV, where he'd obviously taken a whack in the face, and thinking that someone was definitely going to pay for that later.

One mans treasure and all that. I thought he was a useful winger who contributed the odd goal here and there. Wouldn't mind a player like him now imho.

Hugh McAuley.....THE WORST PLAYER I HAVE EVER SEEN in an Addicks shirt BAR none!!!
  • "Hugh McAuley.....THE WORST PLAYER I HAVE EVER SEEN in an Addicks shirt BAR none!!!"

Bit harsh on Hughie imho. Gave us balance and weighed in with more than his fair share of goals.

He is currently (and has been for some time) head Youth Coach at Liverpool - perhaps we should have recruited him to our coaching staff after he finished playing.

  • 'Hapless Hugh' me and my mates used to call him.

You missed Gary Churchouse, Richard Wilson and Barry Endean then to name but 3.....
  • My Unsungs:-

    Ritchie Bowman
    Mark Penfold
Martin Robinson (who's that scoring goals etc.)
    Jimmy Giles
Eddie Youds (met him last year he was my manager in the Footy Aid game at the Valley, brilliant bloke and still mega competitive)
Simon Webster (same as the above a couple of years back)
    Graham Stuart
  • Jim Melrose
    John Pearson
  • Not Alan Dugdale then Alan?
  • I think Peter Hunt has already been mentioned but I remember him for the phantom goal against Oldham and the 1st. minute goal at Old Trafford in the League Cup. A tenacious little fella who became very ill I seem to remember.
  • Claus Jensen- Wonder goal against Man Utd
    Kish-Hard Work every game
Graham Stuart- Sort of player charlton need now
Smertin - Enjoy watching him before he moved away

  • darren pitcher? didnt he score for us at blackburn in the cup 0-1. i went to that game. seemed like a bit of afters after simod cup heartbreak.
  • Blimey Barry Endean that's a blast from the past.Think I've got a picture somewhere of him with his head covered in bandage and resembling The Mummy but he was still playing on.
Not that many appeared to want him to mind you.....
But just for that moment he deserves a little bit of credit.
  • Cyril Davies springs to mind as well. A small, speedy midfielder of the early '70s whose promising career was wrecked by injury soon after he won his first full Welsh cap. Shows how quickly fortunes can change.
