Centre-backs

edited January 2009 in General Charlton
A fair bit of discussion on the board earlier today that the roots of our problems lie in Pardew starting the season with only two centre-backs and how it all went pear-shaped from the moment Fortune got injured.

After today's performance, is Old Father Holland now our official first reserve in the centre of defence?

This is what Mr Parky said post-match :

""Matty said he'd played there for Ipswich Town and I felt he did well. After today's performance, Matty showed he can play there again ..."

  • Well I don't think Parkinson would trust Youga there (nevermind Aswad Thomas or Mambo), and he rates Semedo as a midfielder, so if/when we get someone in I can see him playing there more often if needed.
  • You couldn't trust Youga anywhere :o(
  • Matty's an intelligent bloke and has plenty of experience. Doesnt surprise me at all, and it might extend his career.
  • Surprised me how many times Holland beat Sibierski in the air
  • Bit short for a CB but hey anything other than Jonathon Fortune will do for me, that bloke will always cost us goals with his cock-ups, doesn't matter whether it's the EPL or conference, he is calamity jane reincarnated.

    lol, cue Len ;-)
  • Matty brought leadership to the defence for the first time this season- I hope Hudson was watching as Matty put him to shame. He also won most of his headers, didn't lose concentration and got stuck in- Now MR. Hudson can we see the same from you in your next game!!!

It's said that Chris Perry is too short to be a CB too....I'd have him back in the starting 11 in a shot.

Really? John Fortune? WHat about Mark Hudson's ONE MAJOR ERROR EVERY GAME?
  • Yep Hudson aint much chop either but let me say I'm in agreeance with the Chris Perry comment, he was one of the best we had and to think we literally stole him off Spuds for $100,000. I remember opposition fans were full of praise for him as well after they'd been stung by an Addicks win. One thing you can say about Curbs is that he was a shrewd operator when it came to indentifying cheap players with plenty of potential. Jerome Thomas was another he got for next to nothing who was more than serviceable. Darren Bent for 2.5 mill was the best buy he ever made. Top English goalscorer in his first year with us and eventually sold for 16 mill. It's still hard to figure how we went down with him in the team. (scratches head emoticon)

Could have had something to do with our midfield consisting of Denise, Captain Cleanshorts, Yosser Hughes, Amdy Faye and Omar Pouso.

The presence of the mercurial El Kak, the woeful Diawara and the lumbering Herman in the backline was something to do with it as well.....

Not even Benty could make up for that lot.

Hey whoooaaa.....go easy on the Kak man, that guy was more then serviceable and leaves us with some great memories of thunderous goals ie. Arsehole, Bolton and the free kick to win against Blackburn.
Herman was a disaster though and Diawara , who strangely enough seemed very reliable and strong in his first two games went awry very quickly.

    Brian
  • Diawara would have been very good given time to get used to the english game . just look at Majid now at rangers , quite a few clubs after him including newcastle . Would love either of them in our line up now and would be quite happy with the Elk as well
  • I rated Diawara...was most dissapointed when he left...ceratainly better than anything at centre back we have on the books at present......... that's for sure.
  • Holland has always been good in the air especially for his height
