There were definite positives today

edited January 2009 in General Charlton
and Jonjo's goal alone made it worth the drive and admission money.

We had 4 or 5 genuine attempts on goal in the first half, there were whole matches under Pardew this season when we didn't have a shot. If only Nicky Bailey's little legs were a bit longer or Bouazza had the nous to pass to Jonjo rather than fire across the goal and yet another keeper had his best game of the season.

Hoolahan coming on improved them in the second half but even so we still dominated until they scored from almost their only real attack of the match until then. I was disappointed that what had been a good atmosphere almost instantly turned after their goal.

Parkinson taking Jonjo off was puzzling but that said he is only 16! It is so easy to forget that when he plays as well as he did and we don't want to burn him out.

The one disappointment for me was that had Bouazza finished properly toward the end I would have won £400 as I did Jonjo first scorer and 2-1 to us!!

Despite that an enjoyable day and worth making the effort.

  • Agree a bit but "we dominated" ??????? They outclassed us in midfield. and they were pants !
  • I think we dominated the first half, but never in the second half. Norwich were the better side second half.

They dominated once they scored but until then we were doing all the attacking in my opinion. Just that nothing came of it as usual !
  • You're about Shelvey but did you leave half time?
  • X-ref the thread titled ''the spin post'' for all the reasons to be positive about today's performance!

I said above Hoolahan improved them but how many saves did Elliott have to make even in the second half?

    Marshall had more to do.
  • Jonjo looked knackered from about 60 mins in, so I wasn't surprised he was subbed, but he really impressed in the first half. Sam and Yassin combined really well for most of the game, although their passing got a bit ragged towards the end. If only someone had managed to connect with those two screamers across the face of goal in the first half, we could've gone in 3-0 up at half time. I'd need to see what happened with the Norwich goal again, but I was generally really impressed with Holland's shift at centre back.

Bit of a disappointing result but quite an enjoyable game of football.

Basically I'm with you. However as somebody said on the live thread, the subs were reactive. We started to sag a few minutes before they scored, and perhaps a sub a little earlier should have happened. But then again, I thought Burton did well. We are however quite unable to recover from conceding a goal right now. And the subs were baffling, why on earth Dickson didn't come on at the same time as Youga was a mystery to everyone. Respect to Matt Holland, the best professional on our books.
  • Norwich pushed up far too much in the first half, when we've played teams like that, which rarely happens, we take advantage of it. Just like Reading at home.

They realised that and played better and didn't give us so much space.
  • This is the same Hoolahan who I rated and was rubbished by a large majority on here in the same way Billy Davies gets rubbished.

Prague, Matt Holland is the only genuine Senior Pro on our books?

  • Look I`m sorry there were hardly any positives today. Holland and Jonjo yes. Norwich were pish poor along with lots of other poor teams that have recently visited The Valley we couldn`t beat them. We really do have to take our heads out of our arses and recognise that this team is the worst Charlton team for decades. We will be relegated because we deserve to be at or near the bottom.
  • If you can only play consistently one half at a time you deserve to go down.

We dont have the players who can play a consistent 90 minutes, whether that be due to confidence or ability.

I genuinely think its lack of ability now.
  • I agree with that, we'd be ok if we only had a few inconsistent players, but unfortunately Pardew brought in several of them and thought he could turn them into a team of consistent players.
  • Get Semedo out of midfield he is not and never will be a midfielder !!!
  • What actually is he? Don't think anyone is certain of Semedo's best position.
  • Isn't Semedo supposed to be 'The Enforcer' ?
  • [cite]Posted By: seth plum[/cite]Isn't Semedo supposed to be 'The Enforcer' ?

I think he is but in a "Kishlike" way. He certainly covers the ground and gets the tackles in.

Rather like Kish though his merits are not universally appreciated.
  • Yeah i liked the tactics

Take the only forward off and replace him with a defender for just under 10 mins

    Great

    Great

The idea was Youga left back Basey left midfield and Bouazza up front with Dickson to run at them.

It didn't work but not a bad idea in theory.

I didn't think it was totally ridiculous switch, although it did make me think how little confidence he has in our back-up strikers, Dickson, McLeod and Todorov. What about Fleetwood time to get him on the bench maybe if the others ain't up to it? Clutching at straws maybe?

It was the right move,he covered so much grass that he was knackered.

Bouzy has also, allegedly, played as a forward in his career, I thinkthe idea was to punt balls forwaerd and use his pace. Dissapointed that Parkie did not change to 4-4-2 towards the end of the game, with Bouzy and Dicko up front

So that still left 10 mins before Dickson came on so Bouazza alone when we needed to push up

Dickson should have come on when Burton came off im sure we are allowed double subs

    Just crazy

Oh behave! "Outclassed"??? What game were you watching?
  • Wouldn't say outclassed but in the second half they were the only team that looked like scoring. Should have buried that game in the first half though. Jonjo looked awesome going forward and can't see why he hasn't been playing since the start of the year. Youga being brought on before Dickson baffled me. Playing at home in the cup after leading then playing with no 'real' strikers on the pitch. Parkinson doesn't seem to have the confidence needed to win games. Seems more worried about avoiding defeat than needing to acheive.
  • agreed there were lots of definite positives but big negative was parky's blatent tactical ineptitude which ultimately cost us. defensive sub might have been worth it when we were 1-0 up (although still pretty conservative at home anyway) but bringing youga on at 1-1 made no sense.
  • 'Tactical ineptitude' is a very good way of describing not only what happened today, but in other recent games as well. I would hazard a guess that we will be seeing a lot more off _it as well.

I had Jon Jo at 18/1 for first (and last goal) so a free day out

There was no "feeeeeesh" bollox on the screen.

Joe was well enough to come to the game and BDL gave him a lovely welcome back.

The players wore black armbands as a mark of respect to Sailor Brown

The crowd was bigger than Watford's and QPRs

There was an article about Matt Tees in the programme and he has a booklet out Matt Tees on Football available,
  • Did anyone else spot that Norwich lined up with numbers 1 to 11, and wore shirts without sponsors names on them? Substitutes were also numbered 13 - 19, I think. Very odd to see.
  • was to commemorate their most successful cup run ever Pete, which in 1959 was 50 years ago this season

    my ratings

    Elliot ------------ 6
    Moto--------------6
    fourtune----------6
    Holland ---------- 8
    Bassey------------6
    Jon Jo-------------7
    Sam---------------6
    Smedo------------6
    Bailey-------------6
    Buz----------------6
    Burton-------------6

Good first half but how can we play with one up front ? We had nothing to lose so we should have gone for it. Jo Jon played very well first half, tired second half, very good goal.
Norwich goal was like watching a slow mo replay.

Parky is not the man , we needed a win.

    Meal was good in Celebrations.
