  • Interesting what he says about the impact of all the loanees on the rest of the squad:

    Quote:

The players already on the books are thinking ‘it’s obvious I’m not wanted, so why should I bother’.
  • Curbs never worked with Chappel

Presumably Pards was told that there was no money to buy a centre back. Why else would he go into the season with just two recognised players in that position in his squad?

Doesn't explain the need to take on 7 loanies at once though.

Alternatively, it might make them work harder and more determined to win their place back. Is it a coincidence that Sam started producing more when Gillespie joined? I'm not saying its necessarily true, its just everyone always assumes that having loan players is a negative thing when in some ways it might get more out of other players - all depends on the personality and character of a player.

Agree with the comments though that 7 loan players at once is not an ideal way to go through the season.

To be fair ...... I think we have to break the 7 loanees into 2 groups, though.

First, Pards signed 3 of the 4 loanees I would guess, because there wasn't the funds for 3 new contract signings of the calibre of players he wanted:

    He signed:
Bouazza from Fulham - Prem experience and previous transfer fee, £3.5mill
Crainie from :Portsmouth - Wonder kid at Southampton, current England U-21, tipped for a big future
Primus - A player he had prievously managed, Prem experience, vastly experienced, strong mentality

Waghorn was different - Only 2 Prem games but highly rated - obviously impressed playing for Sunderland in the Youth cup match last year, with Pards looking to inject fresh energy into the squad.

Then Pardew was fired after he lost the dressing room. Parky, once in the hotseat, tried to do 2 things as quickly as possible:
    1) Address the positional deficiencies in the team
    2) Attempt to change the defeatist mentality in the team

The only way to do that with the window closed - was to bring in players with a fresh mental energy and fill the obvious weaknesses in the team. So Parky brought his 3 loanees in for completely different reasons. Initially it had an impact:

Varney was gone to pay for Pardew's compensation, so Burton came in, virtually on a permanent contract - the emergency loan only so he could actually play straightaway.

Gillespie came in to give the inconsistant Sam a bit of competition and maybe even guidance.

McEverley came in because Youga was our soft underbelly and in any case, his confidence was shot.

    Results:
    Parkinson's loans:

Gillespie -Sam has been our most creative player recently - the effect of competition or even guidance from Gillespie?
McEverley- Performed well in place of Youga - and was badly missed while injured.
Burton Hasn't set the place on fire but he's grafted and worked well as a team player - and now permanent.

    Pardew's loans:

Primus - Solid but slow - we had Fortune out injured but did his job. Would've been better teamed with a quicker CB like Crainie?
Crainie - Very uncertain start but kept at it despite being played out of position; finally grew into the RB role adequately.
Waghorn - despite his inexperience, most people have warmed to him because of his attitude, willingness and football intelligence.
Bouazza - Flatters to deceive but when on song, our one truly class player and can score quality goals. Defences are terrified of him and often double up, which creates space for team mates.

Well, Primus, Crainie and Gillespie have now each returned to their clubs.

So now we're left with just 3 loanees. And I believe they've each got good qualities to bring to the team.
They've also been here long enough to be part of the set up - and it's now up to the permanent players to decide whether they want the shirt or not.

Edit: - Just realised Pardew signed all 4 of his loanees from Premier clubs. So looking for quality at a cheap price?
Parkinson signed all 3 of his from Championship clubs. So looking for Championship grafting/battling mentality?
  • Well reasoned posting Oggy. Still doesn't explain how we got into the situation with just Hudson and Fortune when the season began.
  • Because we'd just sold Magic and Paddy - and Pards was TOLD loans for CB's or nothing ...?
I remember him kicking off publicly at the time, he was so frustrated.

So, regards to the loan signings, maybe Pards was only acting within the constraints of his new financially restricted remit?

And that is exactly the point - the Board backed the Manager by expecting him to go into the season (and be successful) with just two established CB's. So the spine of our team would inevitably, either through injury, suspension or loss of form, be under pressure virtually from the off.
  • That's right ..... the team were fine to start off with having only 2 CB's - until Forts got injured at Forest.
After that was when we started leaking goals.

If Curbs were dead (God forbid) he'd be turning in his grave at the thought of having less than 5 CBs in August.

  • I don't consider two and a half years as being a long [suffering supporters] I am sure Leeds United supporters would want to take that accolade.
  • An extract from his book in the Shun today ... looks quite an interesting read
  • Does it tell you how he learnt to miss sendings offs and goals and incidents at pompey. Was it the view at Franton Park that he blamed for this he did make me laugh when he missed it.
  • funny funny bloke! his mannerisms are just INCREDIBLE!
  • Kammy is a legend!

He thought Van De Meyde was being subbed but had infact been sent off.

The bloke never takes himself too seriously, great entertainer and loves his football. Legend.

I agree Gary when i was younger i thought he was a bit of a bellend but as the years have gone on i have warmed to him and now hes one of my fav Sky pundits.
  • Great character, very funny and comes across as being very enthusiastic, but the word legend is over used.

Think people are using it in a loose term rather than a Bobby Robson type 'Legend'

  • Reading the book now, only 50 odd pages in but it is brilliant. No Charlton related stories as yet but up there with Stellings- Jellymans thrown a wobbly.
  • Didn't someone on here have their photo taken with him in the back of a cab?
  • didnt he seriously injure one of our players with an OTT challenge once, melrose? though as a commentator/pundit I like him, always seems to give a straight and honest (non Lineker/Lawrenson/Hansen) view.
