  • Drag this back up from December.

Would be interested if anyone has changed their view since then ?
  • didn't even realise that this was from back that far. My views would be that I would Welcome the investment as long as it was the 'right' investment. How you know what that is, is not something I can answer though.
  • Still a Huge No for me.

I would stop going a them prices
  • At this stage- I'm a resounding no!
  • at the time i voted yes,but right now i would have reservations as to who the interest is from.
  • Not an absolute no but I think that any new board would have to show that they were in it for the long term and would match the level of stewardship and openness that the current regime show and that would be very hard. I would also like to see the same people running the club day to day.

Large amounts of cash would be great and I've no problem about it being foreign but as someone from the middle east nearly said:

"For what shall it profit a football club, if it shall gain the whole world, and lose its own soul?"

This does not really have a YES / NO answer IMHO.

We all feel part of the club. I don't think there's a club in the land that has the same relationship with it's supporters. How many other Chairmen / Managers / Players in the so called big four would take the trouble to meet supporters in the they do at Charlton. If you look on other threads about what Deano has said about the club today and the number of other players still involved with the club in some capacity or another I think it's fair to say that a lot of ex-players feel the same way.

However, is it really possible to challenge the elite by means of 'organic growth'? Football since 1992 has changed and it's unlikely we'll see the same kind of growth shown by Ipswich in their 'European' days. Incidentally if you look back 50 years the Big clubs included Blackpool and Burnley and Preston. To challenge domestically you need to be able to compete on the financial level as well as in terms of the playing staff.

I'd welcome investment as long as it's from a 'Charlton Source'. If I were a Chelsea fan (with thankfully I'm NEVER going to be) I would have welcomed the investment of a Matthew Harding but view Roman's involvement with suspicion. Similarly I would welcome investment from a true Charlton supporter who is interested in seeing his club succeed by helping to level the financial playing field but view a consortium who are only looking at Charlton because, A: They failed to buy their first choice (Liverpool) and B: the price is cheaper now we're in the Championship.

So the debate continues. How much are you willing to sacrifice to become successful?

For my part, I'll take Charlton as they are thanks unless a big investment is for emotional rather than business reasons. We may never be able to compete financially with the Man Utds of this world at the moment but I'd bet that there's not a Man Utd fan walking the earth that feels the same involvement and affection for his team as I do for Charlton.

    Ramble over.
  • Hahaha, I thought this was a new thread aswell!

interesting reading. I'm sitting quite comfortably on the fence on this issue, although at the time i liked the romantic organic growth, the actual reason is if some one wanted to invest £70million in the club i'd be so excited about the whole thing that it would go out of the window.

Arsenal are struggling to compete on organic growth, what hope do we have based upon a stadium and income a fraction of theirs?
  • I would love our club to remain owned and run by Charlton people, but fear that in the long term we will not be able to compete whilst we cling to that dream. If we want to have a competetive club to follow, it will unfortunately mean that we have to give up our dream of organic growth and accept that in the capitalist world in which we live, the corporate buck is needed if we are to remain competetive. I want Charlton Athletic to live long and strong, but I can not see that happening if we miss the boat.

  • To quote a famous Irish politician,

    noi
    Noi
    NOI
  • The club we're quite happy to sell themsleves as a premiership club to encorage support. It can't be easy to reposition themselves as a local club for local people rather than a premiership side should a couple of Russians wander in off the street and try to buy up shares
  • I voted no because I perceive being 'dominated by large international business' as the club being bought out, which is a no-no for me.

However, like many others, I would say yes to substantial investment so long as the core of the business/club remained as is - Charlton through and through.
  • I thought I was reading a new thread too! Like others I am on the fence, my gut feeling is yes to "investment", no to takeover where we lose our soul. I can't honestly see us much of an investment though, we don't exactly have much of a fan base.

So perhaps real estate is our biggest asset? All that prime housing land so close to Canary Wharf with the improved transport links being planned!

For once it's comforting to know that the Valley is in the peoples republic of Greenwich and the council would block such a move.

    They would, wouldn't they?
  • Isay no, do not want to become like Chelsea, I could not afford the ticket prices. This club must keep its Charlton heart.

As others have said an injection of capital from a "Jack Walker" or "Matthew Harding" genuine fan type who understands the Charlton ways and traditions would be very welcome.

We need to maintain the soul of the Club though so I would be extremely wary of outside offers from unknown sources.

I cannot help being concerned about the denials emanating from the Club. I remember hearing Martin Simons saying on Talksport that Parker wouldn't be leaving and look what happened shortly afterwards.

In terms of the poll I've voted for the second option but I think there should be a third option saying something like..... yes if bona fide Charlton!

Although I'm sure memories of the Valley Party must still haunt the wiser heads in Greenwich Council, I reckon they'd be more concerned about Sparrows Lane than The Valley. Just a hunch, based on their usual standard of decision-making.

For what it's worth, I think the current story's a bit of a flyer, but at least it's making us appreciate what we've got.

New investment is all well and good, but there are few who'd be able to match the relative openness and honesty, as well as commitment, of our current board. You don't know what you've got until it's gone...
  • ...pave paradise, put up a parking lot.
  • it would take all that we know and love about Charlton and turn us into the freak show that has happened to other takeovers/clubs.They would not understand what we as a club and fans have been through. The atmosphere and fans belief is back so why spoil it by turning our club into a bunch of glory hunting prawn sandwich eating non singing prats. The grass is always greener
    ................Guess thats a NO then.

  • Interesting post from NetAddicks on the rumour:
Not only are this syndicte the owners of PandO Ferries , but also the former Shell Haven oil refinery site which is being developed as a container port, to be called Thames Gateway. After public enquiry limited development is going ahead, however to achieve the required level of development ( x60 quay cranes ) futher permission will be required, The thought is that a visble 'commitment' to the local area ( CAFC ) will assist in this process. Given that the proposed development of new homes in the thames corridor ( also known as the Thames Gateway ) is Chartons target new fan base - The 'Thames Gateway Stadium' is seen as a win win for the camel jockeys.

An interesting idea but the refinery is in Essex, surely an investment in someone like Southend or Colchester would be more appropriate if this was the case.

this does sound harsh, but if we were taken over by foreign investors, it would take the shine off of our club! i wouldnt bother wasting my money if it was going into rich big wigs pockets!

Whats the reason why these yanks or whatever take over prem clubs, or any english clubs for that matter, its because of the money isnt it! Who wants a board like that, not me! As someone else has stated i cant remember who but they are there for the kudos only, where as our current board are cafc just like us!

    Why would anyone want that!
  • interesting read.......
  • Stone have i sold out ? id like it to go ahead. have i sold my soul for filthy cash ? --------------------------------------its a blonde bobby (fair cop)

thought is was Curb-it and a diddley diddley night at the RO , but it all makes sense now.
  • [cite]Posted By: Charlie Block[/cite]All past tense and commendable - but this season I would have to say Murray is a complete muppet.

very harsh words but murray would have admitted himself his decision making hasn't been the greatest and that curbs carried him for years
