Andy Gray MOM

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
Brilliant yesterday. Managed to keep his feet on the ground for 90 minutes made precisely no runs into space and allowed the QPR defence to concentrate entirely on Nicky Bailey headers. Never once going in search of the ball he was a model of consistency. Chris Dickson would of course have also done all of these things apparently but then Gray is still the master.

  • Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit !
  • Indeed it is, SHG. But it still made me laugh. Not sure what that says about me!
  • I think he did jump and win a header yesterday, however he was defending in our box.
  • Indeed it is Shooters. Thank you for realising that was exactly what it was meant to be.

If you want it straight then Andy Gray is a useless waste of a shirt. Hope that clears that up.
  • People who sit on the fence do irritate me ;-)
  • Would have to be a very strong fence with me sitting on it Shooters :-)
  • I was just about to go bananas!

Andy Gray is the only forward that takes Centre Forwards into the play and not away from it!

I sat in the NE Quadrant yesterday and believe that we have found a nugget. . . .

    The NEW MIKE SMALL.
  • A non-entity. We don't play Dickson because he can't hold the ball up, well I can't imagine he could possibly be any worse than Gray!

    Very Good and very true

Why was he not taken off?

Would have put Burton up there with Waggie

Or Todders if he was on the bench may have old legs but at least would have moved faster than Gray
  • he had a complte mare.imho , not once did he challenge and win a single header. Nowhere near any of the ample supply of crosses either.

  • I posted after watching the game at Lofus Rd that I didn't see what Gray brings to the side as in my honest opinion from watching the games he doesn't:
    1. win any headers
    2. hold the ball up to allow midfielders to come forward
    3. make runs behind the defence
    4. make runs in the channels (which Varney at least did)

    what exactly does he do?

Put this on another thread but here we go:

Thats the thing, I don't think AG is a target man (not in terms of flick ons anyway).

Surely the players see that he can't win the headers when he has a defender on his back all game? However, if the ball is played into chest height or at feet we have nobody better in the team to hold the ball up and bring other into the game.

Alternatively, get the bvall out wide and cross it in allowing him to run and attack the ball (a la Reading) and we will see the best of him).

He is getting the same criticisms as Big Chris did last year and it was exactly the same problems.

And he is our top scorer.

Scores more goals then any other player in our team? ;-)

    Agreed.

We are far more effective when we play to feet. When will it penetrate their thick skulls?

when we get a decent manager like curbs... but there again it might not be exciting enough for some....

OohAah's playing his broken record, lol
  • A broken record could easily have a sharp edge ;-)
  • i will continue to play the broken record till curbishley has returned to us or we return to the top flight or the it wasn't exciting enough brigade hold a 'curbs is god and we're all c***s amnesty' .....
it's gonna be going on for a long time.....................
  • In the first half yesterday, it wouldn't have mattered if he'd have jumped 5 yards in the air and won every header because there was noone within 20 yards of him.

I think the reason why he doesn't jump is because he's always looking to take the ball down, so when the ball travels 50 yards from our centre backs, he's positioning himself to take the ball on his chest, so immediately he starts holding the defender off. This means he's off balance for jumping and if he did jump he would get knocked over every time.

I thought Gray did ok yesterday considering the average service he had. I think because he's slow it looks like he's not closing down quickly enough. I still think he's the best striker at the club.
  • For someone his size he should have thrived on the number of crosses we put in yesterday, but I don't remember him getting anywhere near to any of them. Still what do you expect from someone on 11k a week

  • Can I just point out that when our players DO feed it to his chest/knee/feet areas, he still can't hold it up.

I think he has a good touch, and is the best we have at holding the ball up and bringing others into play. yesterday it wasn't happening for him and he's not been in good form. But he does receive rubbish service and got no protection from the referee yesterday - their centre back was all over him every time the ball came near.

(i still wish he'd jump for headers though)
  • why lump the ball up in the air when there defenders are 3 to 5 inches taller than gray, we did the same thing at qpr ground and he never got alook in, when burton came on we did it to his feet or chest. Is it bad management?
