Davies Appointed !!

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
Former Addicks sports scientist Nick Davies has returned to the club in a new role, Charlton announced on Monday.

Charlton's new head of sports science joined the first-team squad for Saturday's match against Norwich City following the departure of performance manager Niall Clark.

Caretaker manager Phil Parkinson said: "Niall has gone on to pastures new and we wish him all the best.

"We are delighted to welcome Nick, who is in my eyes one of the best sports scientists around. It's a great appointment for the club as we move forward.”

in all seriousness though would you leave a job to join a manager who should be out of work already ? A very worrying appointment imo. And 'as we move forward'? Pity the first team can't move forward towards the opponents goal.

yes, and followed Curbs to Upton Park. Now don't go putting 2 and 2 together .......

  • Oi Large! Think I've had enough of false hopes for the rest of the season!
  • We could do with a new performance Manager, after the performances this season, lol
  • Ah. Thought your board had actually made their first good decision in ages by appointing Billy (I would definitely keep you up) Davies.

Nice work by the thread starter!
  • That is perhaps the cruelest thread title ever. I've never been more crushed.

  • Surprised they haven't roped in Derren Brown or Uri Gellar to have a chat with this lot! Having met them both, it might be worth either of them having a crack at it.

f****** sports scientist - we'd need einstein at the moment
  • ties in with the thread somebody wrote about a loanee saying how unfit the team were
  • Well the last time i saw the 'performance director', he was eating a stonking great pie and chips on Brighton Pier, which i did find ironic at the time !
  • That is a much better signing than you are all giving it credit for by all accounts
  • out of interest, who appointed him ?

    parkinson ?
    waggott ?
    chappell / murray / whitehand ?
  • am not knocking, just generally intrigued as i'm a bit in the dark.

What exactly will a 'head of sports science' do on a full time basis ?

I can imagine measure fitness levels, body fat, advise on supplements etc, maybe design individual diet sheets, but surely there must be more to it for what is quite a weighty title.

Anybody able to add more ?

Sports scientist is a very generic term to be honest, but I would imagine they would look at desiging the programmes for any fitness aspects of training. This would include working with the medical staff for player specific programmes to enable their return to fitness. They would also do the analysis stuff you mention as this would be key to evaulate the success of otherwise of any programmes in place.

Potentially they could be involved in sports psychology as they may have an interest in that side of things.

they may be able to advise on developments in clothing/boot technology etc and how they may assist with getting an extra percentage point or two of performance out of the team.

The amount of work involved in drawing up, implementing and evaluating a plan for professional footballers would be massive in my view.
  • Duties and Tasks

A sports scientist may perform the following tasks:

devise treatment and exercise programs that support athletes' preparation and recovery and assist sportspeople to return to training or competition
conduct experiments, make observations and interpret data in relation to sporting performances, and communicate findings to officials, athletes, coaches and other support staff
design or assist in designing training programs for sportspeople to improve sporting performance without causing injury or to strengthen particular areas of the body
refer clients to medical and paramedical specialists such as orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists and physiotherapists
assist with psychological issues of motivation and stress.
