Rumour Mill - Robson

Just found this on the KM link (Dicko thread):

Gills wait on Robson decision

by Luke Cawdell

Mark Robson's future at Gillingham should be resolved this week.

The club’s non-contracted first team coach is in the hunt for a management job - rumoured to be at Charlton - but should that not materialise, a contract awaits him at Priestfield.

Gills boss Mark Stimson said: "If he doesn’t get that then I hope to tie him up here.

“It’s a management job and it’s a decent job if he were to get it. He is waiting to hear that call and if it’s good news for me, then he’ll stay here with us and if it’s not, then we’ll wish him the best and we’ll move on."

Stimson added: “I’m sure that one day he will be a manager whether it’s next week or a year or two. That’s his goal.”

highly respected in the Boardroom at The Valley and didn't really want him to go, that was a Pards decision. Bit undecided as to whether we should put our faith in a rookie though, I'd prefer a bit of experience of this division, Billy Davies for example.

Fit's the criteria in that as a rookie he'll be cheap and that seems to be the bottom line these days.
  • was there under pardew didnt work parky hasnt worked new broom time
  • Seems to me we need a fresh approach and someone who commands respect in the dressing room, how can bringing in Pardews number 3 be the answer. I know it all comes down to funds, but got to be either Billy Davies, Boothroyd, Curbs, even Trollope/Lawrence got me thinking.
  • If Parky does go, then its Davies every time for me, please no Bryan Robson, O'leary etc etc
  • Hope not...we need a complete change
  • When I saw the words "Robson and rumour" I automatically thought of Bryan Robson...

With respect to Mark Robson I think we need an experienced manager not someone taking his first steps as a manager. Maybe if Parky goes Robson could be a number #2 to an experienced head.
  • The only way he should come back at the moment is if we bring in a new manager and he wants Robson as his assistant - putting Dowie, Reed and co together when they hadn't worked with each other before was the start of our problems, in my humble opinion.

That said, Pardew was allowed to choose his own backroom team and that didn't turn out to be a great success either!
  • Aidy Boothroyd is aparently the bookie favourite for the Leeds job with Gus Poyet so we can rule one of those two out!
  • We need a reality check.
No manager coming in is likely to stop the rot overnight. They will be working with a poor squad, low on confidence and they will have little or no money.
Whether we go down or not ultimately doesn't matter. No one will die as a result (though a few on here might give themselves cardiac arrests booing the team and manager off at the end of every game - there's a welcome thought) and, believe it or not, it will make very little difference to CAFC's finances. Failing to get back to the Prem within 2 years has dealt the critical blow on that score. Whether we are in CCC or League 1 we are dirt poor and will have to rely (as in the old days) on directors writing cheques every few months and/or player sales.
Even if we survive in the CCC we will be forced to reduce the wage bill again in the summer and that means we will increasingly have to look to kids coming through.
We seem to have a mixed crop at the moment – some duds but a few decent ones who are inevitably inexperienced and inconsistent. The most important attribute for CAFC’s manager over the next few years will be the ability to build a team with the best of our young pros. As such, Mark Robson is a strong candidate for the job. To label him a Pardew-man is utter tosh and I certainly wouldn’t give a rat’s behind whether the current senior pros and loanees would want to play for him. They are totally irrelevant to the long-term future of CAFC.
Above all we, as fans, need patience. Like it or not, if we do produce a star or two, they will likely end up being sold but if the board is able to identify a manager who has his feet on the ground, knows how to get the best out of young pros and is able to invest shrewdly what little money the board is able to give him (all abilities which Curbs had or acquired) we can rise again.
I don’t know if Robbo is up to all of that but no one knew if Curbs had it in him when he was appointed (indeed most were shocked at the time that he was chosen as sole-manager ahead of Gritty) but he is as good a candidate as there is for the job.
Finally, to those who can't resist the urge to boo and berate the team and manager after shite performances (and there will surely be many more), once the board has appointed Pardew’s permanent successor, please take a long holiday.
  • you raise a number of interesting points there Peanuts IMO.

  • Good points raised

But to say whether things really matter are a bit much. Yes in the grand scheme of life football doesnt really matter as it is not life or death

But you could say the same well it doesnt matter if there is a Charlton FC as no one will die

easy to say stuff like that harder to do IMO

Good post, Peanuts but there is a fundamental flaw in this sentence:

''Whether we go down or not ultimately doesn't matter. No one will die as a result''

The two statements are entirely unconnected and if there was any connection between them, we should all stop spending our money on watching Charlton and send off the cash we save to African famine relief.

There are lots of scenarios in which no one dies but which matter like hell. They tend to be the things that make life worth living : like art, literature, music, human companionship, a decent bottle of Chateau Lafite wth Christmas lunch, football - or even democracy, come to that. And they also happen to be things which differentiate us from every other species in the animal kingdom.

Sure, there are other things that are more important (like the son of one prominent Charlton Lifer who is going to be in hospital over Xmas, or Andy Gray's situation). But that isn't the same as saying these things don't matter, is it ?
  • Blimey, Nigel ....... you move in cultured circles.

    ;o)

    1982 lafite :
Château Lafite, 1er Cru Classé Pauillac, torn label, vintage not visible, i/n France, Bordeaux - Still Red, 1982, £1405.00.

    Sorry about the teasing!

    ;o)
  • Well I didn't say it had to be 1982 vintage, Oggy!

And I would never, ever, drink from a bottle with a torn label !!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Well, Nigel ..... I'll know who to come for advice on wine That'll keep my lady person happy.
And a happy lady is worth her weight in gold - and no earache.

Might not be able to afford your quality of wine, tho.

Right, quick! Talk about Robson/new manager/whatever to get back on topic before AFKA canes us.

    ;o)
  • That is what i was trying to say thank feck for people like nigel who can actually type what they mean

Right, Oggy, back to the subject quickly. (My wine knowledge is a bit of a cheat, by the way, because my wife is French and comes from a longstanding wine-growing family - Costieres de Nimes, which I thoroughly reccomend).

Sorry, where were we? Oh yeah. New manager...yes, please. But as Gordon Brown said to Cameron (possibly taking a sideswipe at Milliband at the same time), it's no time for a novice. So Robson is a non-starter.
  • No time for a novice agreed, bit like Beaujolais Nouveau, a lot of excitement but can leave a nasty taste in the mouth. So who is there that ticks the boxes and that we can afford?
  • Ian Dowie ....erm, no. Been there, done that.

Aidy Boothroyd......let's say, wouldn't be my first choice.

Billy Davies ..... well, done it all before in the CCC.

Alan C ....... if we can afford him, lol - we'll know what we're getting

Paul Jewell ...... not available for another week or 2. Takes Mondays off to go shagging.

Harry Redknapp .... not likely to be available just yet

Ian Adkins .... why would he want to come here, when his team is top of it's league?

Jimmy Seed ...... unfortunately, not available for interview

Well, we could always appoint an unproven manager. Just what we need.

    ;o)
