I can't sleep

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
what is happening to our great Club is just destroying me at the moment. Even the Board whom I have always supported are beginning to really worry me. I then read a comment that someone asked Chappell at Bromley if the Board debt would still be friendly debt if we were relegated. The answer of 'yes, we'll operated on a League One budget if we get relegated and on the 5m you get as a Championship club if we don't.' What the f**k !! Relegation surely shouldn't even be on the agenda. Go down again and God knows where we will be. Elsewhere I read Parky quoted as saying discussions are already underway with players to bring in, who still want to come as we are still seen as a big Club. Of course we are if you are currently playing in League 1. Get real Board. Under Parky the only way is down. Six games against middle to bottom of the league sides and two points. Hardly the credentials to warrant the job full time. Two of the loanees HE was allowed to bring in, not Pards, have been total flops. Burton and Gillespie are not good enough and now only good enough for the bench. These were players brought in to improve us, to inspire and help the team, now relegated to the bench by the Caretaker manager who signed them. Send Burton back, keep Dickson, he can't be any worse, although we'll never get the chance to find out. And the six games wasted since Pards was sacked have become a joke. And he went three games too late so it's effectively nine, and just 4 points gained in that time. A new man three weeks ago could have assessed the squad, identified players he wants and be ready for the window to open. We have lost that chance. Parky is identifying the players he wants so there must be a budget, however small. Let's not waste what small change we do have left. Get someone in to motivate this squad and with a bit of tinkering we may just find the players to get us out of this mess. Keep dithering and we won't.

It's eating me up as well Large. I can't help casting my mind back to the 60's and 70's, the tiny crowds in Div Three and how far we had come from those dire days. Yet in two and a half disasterous seasons we are heading back there.

The fault lies in many directions and some of it may just be fate.

    1. The departure of Curbs was a real turning point, inevitable as it was. I remember feeling incredibly emotional that day and thinking I really hope this is not the start of the demise.

    2. The decision, post Curbs to get in Dowie, throw prudence out the window and sign a bunch of over-rated, over valued journeymen. Players like Faye and Traore. Money squandered.

    3. The appointment of Uncle Les. Unwise and sad.

    4. The signing of Pardew on too long and valuable a contract, making the decision to keep or remove him far too skewed towards keeping him to save his pay off cheque

We now lie at rock bottom in this league, I can't remember when we last won, and still no permanent manager appointed. I quite like Parky but frankly they've given him too much time in my view. A couple of games to see if he can forge a winning team, if not bye bye. We have now failed to win against a series of mediocre teams whilst Parky has been in charge.

I have said it before but me, If I was a Director, I'd dip into my pocket one more time, get as large a sack of money as possible together with my fellow Directors, throw a net around Curbs, offer him the dosh to keep us up. He's not working, he's got nothing to lose and we've got everything to gain by getting him in. Why haven't they done this already? I am guessing but I suspect that some blame him for leaving a "thin" squad when he left. Time to put all that behind them, and re-kindle the spirit which he brought to the club of dedication, hard work, and professionalism.
  • Great points fellas. My sentiments entirely. Lets brings in Curbs on a big contract until the end of the season. I have no doubt he would keep us up. The directors have shown they cannot make football decisions since Curbs left. He's 50 years old maybe he would be interested in a Director of Football position and bring in a 'Charlton' man to coach. Yes its all gone tits up so Murray and co need to bite the bullet and sack Parky and bring in Curbs.
  • Despite everyone saying give Parky time blah blah blah whch the board obviousl are doing - in hindsight we've dropped a bollock - Parky is carrying on the good work of Alan Pardew ;-) as Large says he's brought in 2 players who, lets face it are no better than what wee have.

Dickson can't be as bad as Burton surely.

wasn't hindsight to a lot of us though, it was a disaster waiting to happen and now it has happened.
  • it is rare that i am anti a charlton manager, even in the dowie/reed days i wanted them to be able to turn it around and at the last few pardew games i spent the whole time with everything crossed hoping he could stop the rot. i knew he had to go of course but i didn't like it. however things are different with parkinson, for me he just doesn't know what to do (echoes of les) and has to go and go quickly before its too late cos i'm convinced under his leadership we will go down. i want a manager who will teach the up their own arses players that if you get tackled don't just stand there and shrug your shoulders, chase the bloody ball down and win it back. have some pride and passion in the shirt you wear. saturday was yet another waste of a day for me when i'm skint and tired (and had the sick bug all week) but i still went - in future i don't see why i should make the effort when some of those players clearly didn't make any effort at all.
  • I couldn't sleep after the Derby game. In some ways I found that so much more devastating than the Norwich defeat because I saw a glimmer of hope.
  • I know I've been around a long time, but others too may have been reminded of the parallels with the wretched 1979-80 season when Andy Nelson lost the dressing room but stayed on, only to be eventually replaced by Mike Bailey.

Bailey couldn't stop the rot that season and we finished bottom, sunk without trace.

But the next season in Div III, with virtually the same team, Bailey turned it round and won promotion at the first time of asking.

I really hope Richard Murray, Derek Chappell & Co, as long standing Charlton fans themselves, are not remembering that example - and using that role model to justify their actions (particularly financial), this season.

As experience has recently taught us , Charlton have a better chance of avoiding relegation now, than scrabbling for promotion next season.

We must grab that chance, with both hands.
  • Agreed OR, I well remember those days and we obviously need a manager with Bailey's motorvational skills now. He managed in the same manner that he played, all heart and effort and as you say , he got promotion in one season, helped a bit by the emerging talent of Paul Walsh. But now another game has ticked by without reward so the target of 33/34 points from 22 games is looking nigh on impossible with the current squad. I really, really wish I could see some or any reason for optimism but I just can't. Sorry.

    Totaly agree with you.

Curbs left mainly because of a behind the scenes fallout with Varney. He would have stayed on for his last year on his contract if not for that and well the rest is history. Not having a go at Varney or Curbs but that was the trigger for the mess we are in now. However if personnel do change I am hopeful things can turn around but challenging for promotion back to the hallowed place is a long, long way off. Never thought I would be praying to stay in the 2nd division!
  • curbs fell out with Varney? thats a new one on me.
  • Hello, Run Like the Wind ......are you really Dennis Rommedahl ?

Quite a radical point to make for a first post, any way you can substantiate that?

Anyway, welcome to our band of cud chewers and Gloomsters.

    :o)
  • and me never heard that before in fact only ever heard Curbs speak very highly of Varney
  • I hope he Rommerdhal NSS wont ever get sleep ever again if this bit of his sanctuary has been invaded

  • Can you see the end of the rot Suzie if so please tell me where to look

i dunno, the way some of you are speaking are as if it is the end of the world.

now, yes the football side of things is bad, but who knows, we might just might put in a good performance on boxing day - scrape a lucky win, and take that up to sheffield. who knows. I just can't see the point in coming on here and doing the whole "woe is me" thing. don't get it at all.
  • because to some of us our genetic make up doesnt allow us to think any other way and we get it off our chest here

  • fair do's mate. I just can't think like that. I still haven't lost the belief. I've lost enthusiasm a bit, although I have moments where i think we can be world beaters. I never think we'll lose a game, even in the prem league, i had a 5% bit of hope we could do it. I keep having waves of urges to look up directions to sheffield cos I quite fancy it, and then Dec talks me out of it by telling me to not be stupid :-)
  • I'm with you here, Suzi.

Agreed, what's the point of limply giving up half way through a job.

It's like going down the pub for a piss up at 8.30pm - and expecting it to be already shut for the night.

    ;o)
  • I am having to take a footie break first time ever over Xmas as it is doing me no favours at all.

I hope they do win as we really need it,

I just cant go i need to think happy thoughts and that means playing xbox with NLJR from 0430 hrs xmas day then so be it

That's it ....... the lucky break Charlton have been dying for!

    From the OS:

"It was with heavy heart that I called the players in at training this morning, and informed them that North London Addick unfortunately has to miss the Holiday fixtures. Immediately the mood began to lighten, Chris Dickson withdrew his transfer request, and the players looked like worldbeaters in the full practice match workout.
I've never seen the Count (Grant Basey) move so fast, it was incredible."

There is more but Parky moved on to other matters.

I know it sounds far fetched but i used to manage a large contract of one of the clubs 'providers' and I got this first words from one of the directors and I belived what they told me there was no reason not too. I have not spoken about it before but i do know Curbs and Varney made up a few months later and as I said I think they are both good people but thats what i was told. Curbs wanted to stay on for his last year and sell/buy players but the argument was how can he do that and then leave one year later. Players may have chossen to come to charlton based on the fact Curbs was in charge. Then a new manager coming in and possibly having no purchase budget as it may have been spent already plus they might not like who was brought in my his predesessor. Anyway they agreed to go their seprate ways in the 'best intrests' of the club but it was not a happy parting behind the scenes. Real shame how things have turned out but I have faith in the future we just need some good Karma.

  • LOL oggster

i have tried to talk Dicko out from leaving but if all it would take is me not going then i will gladly stay away

Heres one win on boxing day and i wont go back until we lose

I haven't given up and anyway, Charlton are part of my family and I'll be with them through thick and thin.

It's like one of my close family relatives has gone off the rails, I want to sort them out, I know I can't really help but it doesn't stop me laying awake at night worrying. I'll p*ss and moan, but I'll still support them even if things don't go right. That's what you do with family!!

This heading reminds me of a song by James Taylor called Mudslide Slim And The Blue Horizon. Part of the lyric goes :

"I can't eat, I can't sleep, but I just might move my feet''.

It's about wooing a young lady when she's simply not putting out - a fair analogy for our relationship with Charlton right now, I suppose...

Well, let's see some feet moving on Boxing Day, Preferably Andy Gray's behind the ball with unstoppable ferocity as he drills the winner into the top corner ...

ps you say you're not sleeping, Large. Hope you're still eating though. Otherwise we'll have to start calling you Little ! sorry... couldn't resist ...
  • Well said Bing.

I mean, would you give up on your kid if plod gave him a tug - even if for the tenth time! - of course not?

Anyone who wants to jump ship is welcome to do so and in the circumstances can hold their heads high.

The rest of us will just get on with it.
