Clubs vote for 'home-grown' rule
The Football League has voted overwhelmingly in favour of implementing new quotas on home-grown players from the start of next season.
At least four players in every 16-man match-day squad will have to have been registered domestically for at least three years before their 21st birthday.
Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney praised the clubs for their decision.
"Players coming through will have a greater chance to demonstrate their talent at first-team level," he said.
The new rule is in line with Uefa's approach and means players who have spent long enough registered to a domestic club will be considered as "home grown" regardless of their nationality.
Fifa had proposed a "six-plus-five" rule - which would have limited the number of foreign players to five - but this ran into problems with European law.
"I would like to compliment Football League clubs for having the foresight to make changes that will benefit the wider game," added Mawhinney.
"League clubs are at the forefront of developing young playing talent for the domestic game and are investing more than £40m a season in this important area."
The Football League proposal was voted in at a meeting at Derby County's Pride Park ground.

Exactly, it's not that great a ruling is it. And ""players who have spent long enough registered to a domestic club will be considered as "home grown" regardless of their nationality."
So how does it benefit our game if players like Todorov, Semedo, Bouazza and anyone else in England for a while are considered homegrown?
A reason to hang on to Shelvey, maybe? (though £££ talks, unfortunately)
And won't do Rob Elliott's prospects any harm...
Not going to affect us really is it?
Well Semedo, Bouazza, Youga and Todorov. So no it won't.
Bouazza may even count, he started his career at Watford.
I dunno - that's just how i read it. There are an awful lot of league clubs without academies and the like so it seems unfair to make them "home grow" their own players.
If its the other way though - good!
It says registered domestically, I took that as just playing in this country for 3 years before 21. You might be right though, that wouldn't be a bad thing.
Spent long enough = three years, which have to be before their 21st birthday.
So Bouazza may well count, Todorov won't.
except dickson of course :-)))
Not sure what the point of it is otherwise - how many current squads would it affect?
Youga, although French by birth, quite possibly qualifies as he was brought here as an 18 year old.
And we've got the 2 young Danish lads Martin Christiansen & Mikkel Rikkel-Jensen or whatever his name is, once they've punched their time out, they'd qualify as home-grown and 3 years before 21.
But 'home grown' doesn't seem to refer to players that came through that specific club's youth scheme.
Therefore, Cranie, Hudson, Burton, Waghorn, Gray, Bailey, Weaver, Holland and others would qualify as 'home grown' as well as our youth team products who now play in the 1st team.
Christensen was also 19 when he signed.
Jensen will count if he stays here a bit longer.
I don't think four players is enough for it to be a problem for us. The way we are I think we'll have quite a few English players at the club for a while.
So they won't qualify.
Agreed, at this level there's always going to be a stack of English players to choose from.
Do I take it players from clubs in Wales, Scotland and Norn Iron are excluded as 'home grown'?
