Would relegation be such a bad thing?

  • We do NOT have major debts as we have broken even over the last few years* - the Parker money paid for the North stand OR Romm and the rest who came in that summer whichever way so I guess we are looking at 10-15M tops - the real challenge is the wage bill with the Sky money going down from 20M to the parachute payment 8M? The bonus is ... well that's for another post...

    * what I find hilarious about breaking even is that most of the Charlton fans want a squad with the spirit of 1998-2002 which cost a fraction of what we are paying out now - can someone tell me why we let Powell and Perry go again???

because the great iain dowie unceremoniously dumped them out on their backsides - it was all downhill from there and tipped the character/mercenary balance in our squad
  • Perry and Powell both wanted to leave.

[cite]Posted By: CharltonDan[/cite]I agree that financially wecouldbe in deep do-do, but what Im asking is would there be an advantage of getting the inevitable out of the way, allowing us to clear out expensive drains on the budget, albeit at a reduced amount due to the buying teams knowing we have to balance our books, rather than staying up with a team that in all likelihood will struggle again next season?

The answer to this I think is no because the parachute payments increase dramatically from next season onwards. In other words teams being relegated in 2008 will receive far more than those in 2007. Therefore it's not best to get the inevitable out the way. If you want to choose a season to go down, it certainly isn't 2007. If we go down in 2007 and don't go straight back up then we'll find there are three new teams following us in 2008 with far more money.
