I waited until this morning .....

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
Well, what a difference a week makes! I left the ground hugely gutted for 10 players, because they tried their hardest. Bouazza didn't look as if he cared last night. We deserved on the balance of play the 3 points, but we must rememember a few things:

1) Parkinson tried his best and did his best with the side, selection and tactics
2) Derby could be the worst side to visit the Valley this season, hadn't scored away from home in over 5 games, yet we conceded two, they missed an open goal and had a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside
3) We had enough fight, commitment but a very rare amount of skill, composure and quality where it matters - in our final third and their final third
4) We let too many balls into the box, because we don't defend quickly enough
5) A LOT of positives - especially Llloyd Sam who showed with some composure in the opposition's penalty area, he can hurt the opposition
6) A centre forward partnership who worked damn hard - Andy Gray needs to jump a little more when heading the ball and Waghorn needs to read the play a little more - but compared to what we've seen for a while, 100% better
7) Their confidence is fragile - so cool heads and a little bit of luck are needed to get that first win

If we go to Norwich and we get a point or win and the standard of play is like last night, then we may have a gilmmer of hope - but if it's another false dawn and we lose weakly to a poor Norwich side, I fear the writing is on the wall - we have managed two points at HOME against Southampton and Derby - which in any other reality check would spell relegation form.

Well done the crowd - I think that if the players show commitment, the fans will do too .... And that is a fair trade off.

If we show that effort for the rest of the season - it won't be Parkinson's fault - it will be for the fact that the team is simply not good enough - and that's a whole heap of people's fault over the last two years not one individual.

Comments

  • good summary supa.... I was expecting the worst when I got up this morning and watched the boys and thought that we looked like a side out there.... still loads of mistakes but we looked like we gave it all and Parkinson had instilled something in them....
  • I thought Waghorn made a big difference, he looks Premiership quality with his touch and ability to come short successfully, something we have lacked since Super Clive himself.

Not only that but he also has real pace to scare defences, I would LOVE him for the rest of the season, I reckon he'll play for England one day.

He sure looks the part to me.
  • agree about Sam - was the best game I've seen him play in a long time and definitely our best player
  • 2 points I have not seen made on here yet;

    1. Cranie was great last night how many times did he pick up the right position and clear up a dangerous move? He is finally beginning to play like an England U21.

    2. Basey may get criticism for his poor header that set up Ellington for the equaliser but he might have saved a goal with that wonder tackle he made on Varney after Elliots's save
  • Basey can't be blamed for the 2nd goal, the fact that Ellington was completely unmarked in the middle of our penalty area was the reason for the goal. Having said that this was a vaste improvement on what I saw at Blackpool, Bouazza excepted, Yes our defence is still fragile, yes our central midfield give the ball away too much and yes Gray and Waghorn look like a blossoming partnership - long may it last, and finally yes the crown sounded magnificent from my end of the TV!

With a bit of luck we may escape relegation.
  • The Derby 'offside goal' was flagged early before the ball was put across for the Derby player to net.
  • It was offside but not the scorer, Ellington mis-controlled the ball and Commons came back from an offside position to collect the ball. Hence the flag
  • Commons came from an offside position to pick up the ball to cross for their disallowed goal. They created nothing, got a penalty where 5 of our defenders were in the box against their only attacker and got a lucky flick on from a throw in... I feel absolutely gutted so god knows how the players must be feeling.

I don't think i've felt like that after a game since we threw away a a 2-0 lead against Spurs in the cup a few years ago, felt like bursting into tears after that. Lay awake at night just staring at the ceiling... playing shit and losing i can take being cruelly robbed after deserving three points is just too hard.

I'm with you on that one, I don't mind admitting I had a tear in my eye as I was walking out of the ground.

Maybe I'm just getting older and my priorities have changed, but I just can't get that worked up about it anymore.
  • I was upset at the amount of injury time the referee mysteriously "found" at the end of the game. Where did he get FOUR bloody minutes from? He reffed the whole game like he'd decided it'd be a draw from the start, and that's what he got. As for Charlton performances, well that's alot more guts and heart than I've seen in 13 matches. Our heads would've gone down a few games ago after an equalising penalty, instead this time we go straight back down their end and put ourselves back in charge again. Just a shame they played Ellington, 'cos no bugger else from their lot looked like scoring. Let's hope we can turn the corner properly at Norwich. What a boost 3 points from them would give us.
  • I had watched the Chelsea v West ham game sunday and thought that Zola was very crafty in making a sub in the 91st minute obviously to delay some time......

Can someone please tell me why Parkinson didnt do the same!!!! I mean for F**k sake that would have bought us 3 points home surely!!
  • I thought Andy D'Urso had a good game. Kept a lid on it and gave 2 deserved yellow cards. Only criticism is that he did tend to give some nit picky fouls in our attacking areas especially against Andy Gray which weren't overly necessary. I certainly can't see, as a semi pro ref myself, how any referee can officiate as if he'd decided it was a draw from the start so find that comment somewhat nonsensical IMHO. I can assure you the one thing Mr D'Urso wasn't concerned with last night whatsoever was the final score and that goes for any referee. I certainly don't care who wins, who draws and who loses in any game I ref or line. We're far more concerned about comments, feedback and the score from the assessor.
  • Think that Derby should have finished the game with 10 men - Powell was extremely lucky to only be yellow carded once. He deliberately tripped Waghorn in the first half - play carried on for a good couple of minutes after. Sky repeatedly showed the incident.

Lady luck does not love us at the moment.
  • I thought that too Barn Door. Since Mini T came along in August I just shrugged my shoulders at poor results i really thought "it's only football' but my god last night was painful...

Jeez, the feckin' refs' union strikes again!
  • I agree with most of the starting comment from Supaclive. I also had to go home and calm down as at 94th minute I walked out as the net bulged, gutted. The air turned blue as finally I had enough throwing it away again, why was a striker left unmarked in the box at the death.

To many balls in the box, I think Bouazza was the main culprit not closing players down.

Curbishley always made the point about a winning mentality by closing the game down. I thought we did that for the last 15 mins ok especially the passage of play on the right with all the throwing’s and retaining control for the last 5 or so, why we allowed them space to come at us in the 4 mins added shows we are still some way from turning it round. I think one or two players naivety let all the hard work of many get wasted again. I also thought we defended from the front for the first time Gray worked his socks off and seemed to link to some degree with Waggy, let’s hope that continues.

Derby worst side so far this season for me, they gave us gifts we should have buried.

  • I think 4 mins was about right, If you think the line of thought used for added on time was meant to be 30 secs per goal and the same for subs take into account the broken corner flag and the pen it gives you about 4 mins

    we should have defended better.

Lets not look for excuses into what happened we tried hard we didnt get what we deserved and that is not the first time under parky that has happened, we deserved more at QPR but for Varneys miss we may have got it,We deserved more at home to southampton but for Kelvin Davies we would have got it, we deseverd more last night but for a lapse of thinking in the 94tth min we would have got it.

Guys our luck is out at the moment and unless we get lucky in the near future all the hard work that gets put in over 90 mins will be wasted.

When we dont try we get walloped when we do try we get unlucky they just have to keep going
  • [cite]Posted By: StrikerFirmani[/cite].... why we allowed them space to come at us in the 4 mins added shows we are still some way from turning it round.

It's not just why did we allow them space, don't forget it was last chance saloon for Derby and they pushed up and squeezed us. There is another team playing apart from Charlton, so we're not always going to get it our own way.

When that last long throw came into our box, nobody on either side could have foreseen it would come off Basey in the direction it did. Defenders were positioned to deal with an anticipated flick-on. Ellington reacted sharply. That's just the luck of the draw.

Not me Eltham. Agree with Spankie about not being able to officiate for the draw but that's all. I thought D'Uso was given the game cos it was on Sky and and he was simply up for a runout. He didn't get involved in anything remotely approaching tricky, missed god knows him much climbing, use of arms etc by Derby players, esp on Gray. Not even the penalty decision was particularly difficult. He bottled the punishment for the fould on Bouazza for the free kick on the D and definitely the nasty two-footed lunge near the end which IMO should've been straight red.

As for the nonsense that was four minutes added time, what a total cock, where on earth did he find that?
  • truth is there were 3 unmarked derby players in the box when that ball came in, basey can not be blamed as he just tried to get his head on it, fortune, hudson craine etc should have been picking up there men and not ball watching as they were doing. too many goals have been conceeded this way this term.
  • To be fair Adam, our defenders were positioned to deal with a possible intentional flick on from the Derby player who was intended to receive the long throw. With the ball coming off Basey the way it did, our defenders were wrong footed and so too were their forwards..

Ellington did brilliantly to react when he himself was wrongfooted.

Sometimes that's just the way football is.
  • true oggy, still hurts tho mate...
