Ratings and THE POSITIVES

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
All below were positives and 100%ers, bar couple of negs

Charlton:
Elliot 8
Cranie 9
Basey 6 - has to close down quicker and looks too heavy to me. . . .but played sensible enough
Hudson 7
Fortune 7
Sam 7
(Gillespie 81) - I always thought he was a great deliverer of a ball. . . .still waiting keeps over cooking em
Semedo 7
Bailey 7 - needs to stop flapping in the last 15 mins but did ok
Bouazza 6 - same as Bailey, loses possession far too easy and in the wrong areas and offers no cover for the left back
Waghorn 8
(Burton 79) - Will get Parky the sack just for him signing imho
Gray - 7

Subs (not used): Weaver, Youga, Todorov.

Am glad Youga was kept away from the starting 11, ditto McLeod. Two desperately brainless players who need to be shifted out of the club.

Now if we'd put the same application in v Coventry tonight may have been different.

Comments

  • Cranie who i've thought was poor at best, had a blinder tonight..i take my hat of to him, well played sir :)
  • God knows how you can give Crainie a 9. Good defensivly but offers nothing going forward.
  • Cranie didn't put a foot wrong. I'm a pro-Yassin supporter but Cranie was faultless tonight and I hope he continues like it.
  • Cranie had his best game for us tonight, pretty convinced of that.
  • I said for a few games now Cranie never was that bad. He might offer nothing going forward, but he's decent enough defensively. Doesn't stand out, doesn't throw himself around as he's not that kind of defender, if we were doing well everyone would say he's solid, when you struggle he isn't doing enough. Bit like Holland really.

I'd like to see us be calmer on the ball and pass it more, but it does look like if we're direct in the right way (not hoofing balls in the air to players that can't win it), it'll do for now until we're more confident.

Elliot 7 - not at fault for either goal, 1 good save, distribution poor, but came and collected ball well, has to start as no.1
Craine - 7 - hmmmmmmmm not much bad but not much good either but did basics well
Hudson - 7 - Solid, communicated with elliot well, again nothin spectacular
Fortune - 8 - We look so much betta with him at the back
Basey - 7 - Good delivery of ball, was let done by booazza and often left with a 2 on 1 situation
Boazza - 6 - gets into space well but failed to bury 2 putawayaball chances - varney mark 2??, and left Basey uncovered throughout
Sam - 8 - Good game from sam, few good balls in, should have put away chance in first half but played well throughout
Bailey - 5 - another poor poor performance from him, wayward pass after wayward pass, sure there's a good player in there somewhere and gives 200%
Semedo - 7 - Solid does simple stuff well, which we need, has started workin well with the rest of the mid
Gray - 7 - well taken goal, run down players poss should have got another, held ball up well
Waghorn - 8 - MOM tireless running, skill endeavour and grit/determination, great little player hope we get him for rest of season

Gillspie - experienced cameo at end, thought should have come on earlier for boo after he missed the 2nd glorious chance
Burton - hmmmmmmmm didn;t really do ought in 20 or so min was on

Parky - Thought he left the subs too late, we needed to bring on fresh legs as soon as went 2-1 up, boo should have come off for gillespie, waghorn was looking tired so far nuff, burton didnt do ought thou.

All in all thought it was a good performance 100 % effort by everyone, waghorn was quality - begs the question why he hasn't featured more during his spell with us? Sam looked a good player, Much more solid at back with Basey at LB (granted he is a little slow, but his delivery is quality) fortune and hudson looking good together, elliot was good (will we see weaver again?? Could he be off to help fund a signing in Jan?) Bailey, sure there is a good player there somewhere.

but they were the deff the worst we have faced and we still didn't seal 3 points, we should have been 3/4 up. And real anti climax, was absoltutely gutted, still am, but atleast we are off the bottom

    Give you a clue:

You dont need Cranie bombing forward if the guy in front of him is doing his job.

Tonight was the first time that we have (in the main) kept to our 4-4-2 shape properly.

Now we need to start picking up horrible away points any old how.
  • I thought the whole back 4 as a unit defended very well. Hudson and Fortune looked solid. Unfortunate that the equaliser came off the head of Basey and fell almost perfectly for Ellington...just such bad luck...the Derby offside goal was offside. The first ball to the player who crossed it was offside, not the ball into the player who put it in. I feel the assistant gave it for the wrong pass but offside nevertheless and the penalty was harsh. The ball grazed Semedo's arm but his arm was hung out there and refs will give those 9 times out of 10....
  • I'm so gutted tonight because I thought our players did a great job. They deserved more with the exception of Bailey who is useless IMO.

Funny player really, when he first played look good all round. Other times doesn't look good enough.

  • Bailey is struggling with pressure cooker football. He's only young and hasnt had much around him to play off.

NB: Holland not even on the bench. . .

It's interesting going back and reading that.
One moment in last Wednesday's League One victory over Huddersfield summed him up. He threw himself in front of a fierce drive to block and spring Southend into attack, then bravely won a header, risking the loss of one or more teeth, to free a team-mate and, seconds later, Alan McCormack had the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0.

When he first came here he looked like the brave and aggressive midfielder we've missed since Parker. Other times he doesn't look like that at all.

I can understand the pressure and confidence comes into it, but those are things that players usually have naturally.
  • I thought Bailey was poor yet again. As soon as he got the ball he just hoofed it upfield without looking, signs of a player lacking in confidence. If we got a few wins I'm sure we would see the Bailey we saw earlier in the season.

I could understand the defence were more direct, agree with that about Bailey though, he could have got the ball down and looked for a pass at times. I hope that comes in time, if we have to be direct to get a few results that's fair enough, but the central midfield need to be more composed at times.

Don't remember many games in which being direct has worked for us. Maybe that's because we weren't just hoofing it up to one player to flick on every time, like we did last season with Iwelumo. I guess it's just more acceptable now as we are struggling and lack confidence. When we expected to be winning every game being very direct was just frustrating.
  • can't believe Gray has only got a couple of sevens. I thought he was excellant tonite and exactly what we need from him week in and week out.
  • Agree about Gray also, not just his goal but his all round play was better than it has been in a while. In some games he really hasn't done a lot. Looked much better tonight.
  • I dont know about numbers but the middle of midfield still worries me.

I will never be convinced about Semedo, he does too many stupid things, handballs, stupid fouls..

Bailey is a grafter but we need someone in there who can put his foot on the ball and use it rather than lumping up to no-one. I suppose ZZ will be sold but he could be the difference for us.

I Bailey thought went missing most of the game, made a couple of decent tackles but not much else, shame, as I like him.
Thought Waghorn was superb, will probably get slated for this but his strength and runs reminded me a little bit of a very young Rooney, Sunderland have a find and half there.
  • You have to hope we can do something in January window, Cranie, Waghorn, excellent last night, Bouazza, did well, but should have buried his shot that went over the bar when faced with the keeper.
If we lose all three due to recalls or the loan periods running out, we are stuffed IMO.
  • Crainie had a very solid game defensively but doesn't offer anything going forward and, especially at home, you have to offer something in terms of overlapping, if only to create room for the right midfield/wingman

IS it time to try him in his proper position - centre-back?

We said the same last night.

    Looked very good indeed.
  • Mark Bright on Radio 5 Live Xtra last night was waxing lyrical about Waghorn. Also said that he thought that Gray had his best game yet for us and kept doing his pieces about Sam and Bouazza not taking on their man or knowing when to release the ball.

If you go back to the thread when we signed him....and everyone said he was a waste of a loan....I said he was like Wayne Rooney and I said he was excellent

The boy is going to be a great player IMO and I suspect he will get a good reception whenever he comes back. I wish we could afford him
