Years Ago

now Liverpool were amongst, if not, the most successful teams in the country.

A large part of how they achieved this success was to maintain stability by promoting from within, picking managers from what was known as their boot room or appointing former players steeped in the traditions of the Club. Although they have had Champions League, European Cup whatever they call it now success under the likes of Houllier and Benitez, I cannot remember them winning a league title since they veered away from the tried and tested "boot room" policy.

Things are grim as we all know but should we also try that kind of approach or has the game changed so much it would no longer work?

I guess one could argue that we attempted it with Les Reed and Pardew although the outsider Dowie committed his own form of carnage prior to that.

We moan about too many loan players who have no allegiance or loyalty to the Club yet in the next breath we want an "outsider" as manager (who presumably also has no loyalty or allegiance to the club?) to "kick arse."

After much thought and reflection I'm coming round to the viewpoint that in our dire straits we need people around who have a genuine love or at least regard for the Club as they will at least have the will to try and fight for our future.

What do others think?

  • They haven't won a title since the backpass rule came in, as many United supporting friends remind me.

Fickleness is somethign football supporters have in shades, and their views tend to reflect it, as you say about the outsider thing
  • With the liverpool view in mind, then i'd say yes.

But how many clubs have also tried it, and failed miserably?
  • i tend to agree,i think we may have been slightly too hasty to sack dowie.

that's why I hate Liverpool so much - everyone goes on about loveable Liverpool nowadays - in the 80's they were more arrogant than United are now - it surfaced it's ugly head again when they won the CL against Milan and I DESPISE them.

That and the fact that whenever we went to Anfield in the late 80's we always had a dodgy penalty against us at the KOP - remember the John Aldridge dive in the 1-0 defeat - plus losing 4-0 at selhurst to them god knows how many times, ROsenthal hattrick, and those filthy bin dippers larging it up in the Port Manor or down Norwood High St grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Make it even worse the scouse wannabees Tranmere coming to Upton Park and that **** Aldridge again.

The only thing they've ever done to make me like them is beating Palace 9-0.

But you have a point Len about the boot room bit LOL
