SLP: Murray gives Parkinson more time
CHARLTON chairman Richard Murray is not about to sack manager Phil Parkinson, despite Tuesday night's humiliating defeat at home by fellow strugglers Coventry.
And his acting manager hopes he can still turn around the Addicks fortunes, starting with Monday's home match against Derby, televised live on Sky TV.
"It's our chance to show the watching millions we are not as bad as our league position implies," said Parkinson.

Very disappointed if Parky is being given more time.
You don't be an assistant of an underachieving side for nearly 2 years without being part of the problem.
Look forward to seeing the evidence. Because since the first 20 mins v Bristol City seven or eight weeks ago, we have shown nothing that suggests we deserve to be anywhere other than where we are.
We need a manager. Not a caretaker. Somone everyone can get behind, whether it's Parky, Poyet, Curbs or, heaven help us, mad, bad and dangerous to know Paulo. Almost past caring who - just end the indecision and put someone on the bridge with full authority to try to stop the rudderless ship from sinking further.
sky will have to announce their viewing figures like our attendances if there's gonna be 'millions' watching that game
FFS we really are begining to drag me down
I'm heartened to know that there is at least one person on exactly the same wavelength as me.
I personally think that giving the job to Parkinson is a bad idea for exactly the same reason as BigRedEvil, however if finanaces dictate that we can't get someone else then ffs just give him the job so that everyone knows where they stand.
It's very clear even at this early stage that despite the encouraging signs from the QPR and Soton games, Parky isn't getting the reaction we'd hoped for and he's not the 'new broom' we need. It's pretty obvious there won't be any new players coming in during the window so we're down to the players we have, Parky isn't getting any more out of them than Pardew did so something needs to give.
Just as worryingly, I think patience is running out with the board now too, and include RM in that. True they can't control what goes on on the pitch but aside from what looked like a bit of promise near the beginning of Pardew's reign it's been a catalogue of catastrophe.
If an investor comes in and wants to appoint a big(ish) name manager, then it could mean getting rid of the bloke who replaced Parkinson.
Yet more instability.
Could it be that the potential financial situation for Charlton without an investor is bleak and RM is taking the view that a secure CAFC in League 1 is better than a Championship side with minus 10 points after administration.
Or does that sound silly??
Not sure about administration (and I hope you're wide of the mark!) but this does have all the hallmarks of being resigned to relegation and a financial damage limitation excercise as opposed to fighting to stay up. Very sad.
What I meant was, perhaps RM is thinking more about securing our future than worrying about which league we're in.
I know we're skint but surely the club have to look at the bigger picture. It's better to be skint in the championship than going into administration in league one as that's potentially what could happen if we drop another division. Valley11 said above that it'd be better to 'have a secure CAFC in league 1', how on earth would we be secure, we'd be in an a complete financial mess.
I didn't say that's what I want. Just wondering if securing an investor is crucial and everything else is secondary.
Perhaps that sounds ridiculous but it does seem strange that PP is being given an extended run after little has changed on the field since Pardew went.
If all of the efforts were put on staying up and we did go down then we would be well and truly up shit creek.
Edit: I probably said exactly the same thing this time two years ago as well!
Upon Curbs departure the board has effectively allowed each new manager to go for root and branch change. Like Leicester, Leeds & sundry others we now know - it does not work. It seldom does. Stoke and Hull, if their sojourn with the big boys falters, will need to heed the lessons.
Fueled by PL TV revenues a club feels obliged to allow its manager the funds to find a formula to “keep up with the Joneses”. However bringing in a raft of "better" players it can barely afford from anywhere on the planet puts the dynamics of the club “at risk”. Catch this PL virus and you are in danger of placing your club at the mercy of every football mercenary & his agent.
At one level it is almost manageable but repeat the dose in trying to return to the PL and you risk the playing identity of the club. In our last PL season we added 11 new players, last year we brought in 19 players (excluding youngsters), now we have 9 more before the January window.
There is always the challenge to move forward. For 15 yrs we achieved significant progress. Such progress was achievable because at its core there was a fundamental stability to the club, its aims and its focus. It was strong enough to withstand the knocks of relegation and injury & illness to key players.
In 3½ seasons we have employed 80 players & 5 managers. Of our then 1st team squad only Holland & Fortune remain. Just Sam & Youga progressed to join them. Blackpool & Coventry displays were poor but right now another spin of the revolving door will just accentuate the problem. All change has achieved is a downward spin cycle Hotpoint would envy.
Who realistically is better placed to turn this around ? I note a list of 40 candidates yet I doubt more than 5 of us agree on anyone of them. Why will any of them, faced with 7 loan players & limited funds, be better able to change our fortunes ?
Football & footballers today are very different. There are the elite, the wannabes and what’s left. I doubt the talent, experience & character we need will be readily available in the transfer market. Even if it is, I suspect any player will feel at the moment there will be better options.
Football especially the Championship needs teamwork & team spirit. In the absence of talent it is a pre-requisite for success. We will not progress until we stop the churn. It will not be pretty. It will be downright ugly. There is no magic wand.
The PL is gone. Pardew is gone. Even Blackpool & Coventry are gone. As of today we have 3 simple requirements.
1. Ask every player if they believe they are good enough to play at this level.
2. Ask every player if they want a long term future with this club.
3. If the answer is Yes - then ask them to go out and prove it for every minute of the rest of this season
If they do - they will have a job, our support and our thanks

I can't fault parky so far - why not give him a chance. Some big name coming in will not help.
If Parkinson is to be released, he needs to be paid up. At the moment that money isn't there, so it would have to be found from somewhere.
No doubt some at the top require to be fully convinced that finding that money from somewhere else (additional player sales or further debt) is more weighty than appointing a permenent manager.
We are in a mess, we need to stand by Parkinson and the players need to build up a team spirit from these times of adversity - several of them should be returned from whence they came so we have a lower loan contingent. More turns of the merry-go-round won't help, espeicially since we don't have money to fund yet another manager's cravings. We may still get relegated, but I believe that stability and solidarity is the best way forward from here.
more fight ? Our current lot couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag. And that hasn't improved under Parky.
