Landed at Gatwick at 10.30pm tonight and am shocked (but hardly surprised) at the continued decline since I've been away. I've been completely out of touch since the Southampton game on a boat up the Gambia River and didn't even know the Blackpool result - so came home to discover news of two more piss poor defeats.
The players are letting us down for sure. But my overwhelming feeling is exactly what I've been saying since Pardew went - we need a manager, not a caretaker!
And the board have to take some of the flak here for the way they've handled things. After the horror show v Barnsley, both Pardew and Parky should have gone and a new broom should have come in with time to turn things around (hate using Palarse as an analogy, but Warnock came in last season after just ten games, so was given time to sort it out).
Many, if not most of us on this forum said so at the time.Instead, the board has dithered not once but twice. First, Pardew stayed for another three matches when everybody knew he was on borrowed time.
Result : total uncertainty, continued lack of direction and one point out of nine.
When Pardew finally and inevitably went, instead of appointing a new manager to take the team by the scruff of its collective neck, the board decided to limp on for four games without any manager at all.
Result: even more uncertainty and one point out of 12.
So since the tipping point v Barnsley, when it was crystal clear what needed to be done, we have now wasted seven matches in which we have scraped two points out of 21 under the 'leadership' of two lame ducks.
No idea who is prepared to take the job and who we can afford. But does anybody now doubt that we have to have a manager in place by the next match v Derby or else the rudderless ship will just carry on sinking?

"Adkins was in charge of Bangor City in the League of Wales, where he was at the helm for the Citizens' title wins in 1994 and 1995.
Adkins was appointed caretaker manager by Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton in November 2006, following the departure of the previous manager, Brian Laws. Adkins had previously held the role of physio at the club. After his spell as caretaker he was appointed as permanent manager on 7 December 2006.
Due to Adkins' previous role with the club, Scunthorpe supporters chanted "Who needs Mourinho, we've got our physio!" on the terraces of Glanford Park in his honour.
Adkins guided Scunthorpe to promotion from League One to the Championship with three matches to spare on 14 April 2007. The Sun newspaper named Adkins "Emergency Manager of the Year" in an article that looked at the match winning average of replacement bosses in the 2006–07 season following the departure of the previous manager."
The bit about the "Emergency Manager of the Year" makes him suitably well qualified IMHO.
After 3 defeats and a draw from his 4 games, it seems he isn't.
But the worrying thing is, if a seasoned manager like Pardew couldn't get the best out of the players and an up-and-coming manager (who has won a promotion) like PP can't do it - who can?
The last three years of manager changes are just as depressing as the total apathy from the current crop of players.
I'm utterly deflated so god help the board in making a decision.
Billy Davies?
When Curbs left there was a lot of noise made about the application and interview process.
Either they learnt not to get embroiled in a media frenzy, and risk bad publicity, as with Billy Davies' apparent u-turn.
Or they aren't interviewing and PP's the man.
Nothing would surprise me with our current set up sadly.
Cannot believe after last night though that will still be the case, they have had plenty of applications in any case including Mr Di Canio, wonder if he would even get an interview though ?
am I the only one thinking that things have certainly gone downhill since Chappell arrived so initiating Peter Varney's departure. And Chappell's brief appearance on here - what was that about ? I'm now wondering if it was really him.
Not that anything was gained from it to be honest.
