Nicky Bailey

What have we done to him?

This was a fine player who rapidly became our top scorer from midfield (doesn't say a lot I know), could tackle and pass.

The guy is now frightened of his own shadow. The same was true to some extent of Varney too.

Something is very wrong behind the scenes but whether it is the management, the fact that the players are couldn't care less mercenaries, the new Board regime of Chappell and Waggott or a combination of all those I really don't know.

What I do know is that I've had serious, worrying non-football related problems and didn't think I'd make the game. However the opportunity presented itself and after driving 150 miles all told and a days work I ask myself why I bothered.

The result is relatively irrelevant, I've seen enough dross down there over 45 years, but to my eyes they jacked it in with about 20 minutes to go and that is unforgiveable. The likes of Les Berry, Peter Shaw et al were inept but nobody could question their effort. I'm not sure the same can be said of some of the tossers disgracing the shirt tonight.

  • I don't think he deserves much criticism, purely because by the end he was the man along with Fortune I would say trying 100% to claw something back.

His decisions weren't the best, and his confidence has been badly knocked by a couple of bad performances and the groans from the crowd everytime he does anything remotely resembling a mistake, but he was still trying to make things happen, and on a night where many players are being blamed for not trying/caring, I think he showed he was trying and that he does care.

I honestly think that the crowd has had a huge effect on his and other players confidence. Either by making him cautious about making a certain pass or nervous about making a mistake. The fact he is so desperate to be involved makes him more likely to make a mistake.

This crowd situation is really bothering me, but its such a vicious cycle I don't really know how it can be stopped other than by winning 10 games in a row, but thats not going to happen. Anyway thats for another thread.

He's not the same player at the moment, but hopefully we'll get to see that earlier season form back soon.
  • he had a ruck with parky allegedly at traing before sthmpton and was well and truely in the pardew camp make from that what you will
  • But his effort is still top mark.

It's his decision making and wayward passing that's causing him to try too hard ..... classic confidence crisis symptoms.

It's what happens to many players in a losing streak.
  • we as a team have crucified him,he can't even make a 10 yard pass
  • Same as Varney guys - but let's not start that one off again! ;-)
  • would pele or maradona have made it as players thru our current training /coaching set up or would we have destroyed them
  • Bailey was my biggest disapointment. He spent the whole 1st half pointing for eveyone else to pick up runners, whilst he was stood looking at his own shadow.

Don't think he put 1 tackle in in the 1st half.
  • feel for him he is trying to get us going and he is suffering ,cant do on his own thats why he keeps making mistakes needs help .
  • In a struggling side this kind of thing will always happen...even your better players drop a bit off the pace.....I think he's totally disillusioned right now.
  • what do you expect everytime the defence got the ball they kept on giving it to Bailey Coventry suzzed this and put three players on him and lost the ball

  • I dont mind Bailey just think his confidence is shot to shit.

Maybe Championship is just a step too far, good tackler, not so good passer.

Fook me that midfield needs ZZ at the moment.
  • I think he is a good passer of the ball, the ball over the top for the offside Bouazza being an example. The problem is a lot of ours players are hiding at the mo and so when he gets the ball the options are often limited, so he has to play a wonder ball or the obvious one that is often cut out.
  • You're right there. I thought 5 or 6 hid in the 1st half last night.
  • The team is riddled with self doubt and it doesn't matter whoever the player is they would have played shyte. At least Bailey did not hide!
