Tonight-Coventry

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
I'm not going tonight-not some boycott on my part- but rather a wish not to drive 150 miles and watch the Club I love wither and die still further, its beginning to feel like visiting a terminally ill Relative in a Hospice.
Where did this all begin this malaise visiting our Club. The day that Curbs was brought out by Richrd Murray to say he was off came as a shock to all of us I dare say, but for me it also, with hindsight, started a change within the Club.
By this I mean that the Board has changed, the way that we have been communicated with by them, I know that they still attend Supporter Forums btu the silence from the Board at this time of real crisis is deafening. The appt and structure around Dowie was poorly thought out, the appt of Reed was forlorn in the extreme and then Pardew.........
The Board have effectively wasted the legacy that Mr Curbishley left us, cetainly in Financial terms and I feel the rapport with Fans, we no longer have a supporters rep-due to financialchanges-3 years ago we were the best run Club in the League with no debts etc now we are the brink of Div 1 and financial crisis. £30m in debt........
What is he sitution with PP? Is the Job his or not? More uncertainty-is it a reflection of the inability of Board to make effective decisions at times of crisis?
Curbs left at the right time for Him, the England manager debacle had damaged Him, but He must be astonished at what we, as a Club, have achieved without him.
I hope we win tonight of course, I am away now, out of the Country, until the middle of Jan, I desperately want things to get better, but have little confidence of this happening.

No it's not, it's just a game. Get some sense of prospective.
  • I said it was beginning to feel like it.......the analogy is sound, tho I take your point in relation to it being a Game albeit one that we are unable to get a result from

One of the directors had said that Dowie was appointed, not through choice, but because he seemed the best of what was available at that time. They got rid of him because of the way he bought his brother in to take over the running of the team. That's what we were told. HH was supposed to have punched Dowie for bullying a younger player and it seems that a whole lot went on that we knew nothing about. I can't comment on the veracity, merely offer up what I heard. The appointment of Reed turned us into a laughing stock. Directors earnt a 10% interest on their loans that were called in, so they're not as benign as is often supposed. The club basically geared up financially to sell and that's what the board was expecting to happen. It didn't and all that they could do was recoup whatever money they could.
I still believe that the underlying causes are that the big money in the Premier League has totally distorted football. Footballers play for obscene amounts of money and pride in a shirt went out of the window by and large. I believe it's why fans everywhere have started booing, the big time bling boys want all their celebrity status and flashy cars and they get it because we are willing to pay. MOTD is starting to comment on booing fans, Hansen writes a column about it, there's changes going on everywhere. Charlton is obviously in crisis, but I think it's merely a reflection of modern football. Set against the economic hardships that many of us are going to face, football no longer seems a wise choice when it comes to spending our spare money. Our board is floundering but it is by no means unnusual in this and it is responsible for some, but not all of its problems.

IMHO the analogy is not sound. I have supported charlton for years, they are part of my life, but them losing doesn't come near to terminally ill relatives.

I am as excited about tonights game as I always am - looking forward to seeing a few chums, love the evening game buzz and hoping upon hope that we win. But if we do lose then I will bounce back and be there for Derby - just as excited. I am not a saint - I left at half time against Barnsely but I hope that I put it in perspective more than most on here.

You need these bad times to make the good times oh so much better. Would we have celebrated at Wembley to the point of heart attack if it was our 10th successive visit? .....no. It is painful at the moment but lets take the rough with the smooth . ............dying club ffs.........
  • Can't do Saturday afternoons so looking forward to tonight and also next Monday (just a tenner to get in!)

    C'mon you Addicks!!
  • the analogy is awful and has brought back vivid memories of going to hospices to visiting dying relatives and friends relative... and watching charlton doesnt come close. i cant read beyond that line.
  • with you there 100 % curb_it
  • i dont think it was meant to offend folks, bit of a mistake to write it but lets not get too caught up on the wording i think milne is trying to say he is hurting like hell like we all are
  • I'd steer clear of the hospice reference, I think of it more in terms of what my uncle (who passed away this year and was a regular in the 40's to 60's era) said to me some years ago - "Charlton don't come and see you when you're bad"

But, Milne does raise some uncomfortable points. There seems to be confusion at all levels of the club - we were told Murray was effectively out of it and it was the Derek and Steve show. Then, who's giving Pardew his P45 - Richard Murray. It's also plain that the board are looking to sell out and move on as Stilladdickted says. That is their right and until we've chipped in the amount of money they have we can't argue. But, it heaps more uncertainty on an already fragile set-up. The Parkinson thing is another fudge, we know we're skint so I guess the board are praying he gets some points so they can give him the job permanent. It all smacks to me of the Les Reed disaster, it looks like we never learnt from that, like we never learnt from last deasons debacle with the loan players.

I'll be there tonight, and next Monday, but although I probably look reasonably poositive compared to some of the people down there, I worry about the whole future of the club.

Totally agree with you 1905. You gotta take the rough with the smooth.

Exactly the same here, was off yesterday, in today but so bunged up, dont finish until 6pm, would have to leave straight from work, so still in work gear, crappy drive down the A2, no dinner (dont do food at the game, cant stand it), and trudging back down the A2 with the hump if we lose and cursing the world for a late night on a school night (its my age)
  • Go to the match, we'll win and you'll feel a whole lot better.[/quote]

Very very true, better go with my flask and thermals

Oh no, wimped out in the end, feeling terrible but the positive is that every away game i go to we loose, so as hubby has gone on his own, i suspect we will win. In bed instead listening on CAFC TV (terrible sound!)
  • I fancy us to win this.We are further through the process of sqeezing the 'Dowie effect' through our bowels.

Cov are much further back from a full recovery.
