"The good old days"

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
I have to laugh when I read all the newbies moaning about the standard of players playing up front at the moment. I'd love to know what they would all have made of Leaburn playing?

What would they say about Ralph Milne, Mike Small or Mark Stuart?

Ok we have some players who are not playing that well at the moment, but remember Charlton have never had a team of great players, just a few good ones with ordinary players along side them.

We may want to dream of our great past history, but alas, it isn't that great!

  • great post , ralph milne total shite, how we could do with a mendonca hunt partnership , or hales flanagan .
  • Nothing wrong with big Carl.
  • I love Leaburn, all the effort, and 110% commitment, but what would people make of him now? He be called all the names under the sun, and bullied out of the club!
  • Carlo's a legend in this house; how long did it take him to get that first (deflected) goal? I've a feeling he's still our leading scorer in European competitions with 2 goals. But how many goals were scored because of his knock downs etc.?A team man with a big heart; not too many of them around at the moment.
  • Wasn't the deflected goal his second one?
  • You could be right ali. My people are checking; I'll be back.
  • It was, he scored on his debut against Newcastle.
  • Agreed chaps, apologies. March51 jnr has just got back from the pub and put me right as well !

Makes for a better legend tho, don't it! ;-)
  • Carlo...great footballer...lousy striker...simple as that really...it's those two totally diverse factors which keep the debate raging to this day....some folk seem unable(or blindly refuse) to dissasociate the two.

  • Ralph Milne total rubbish and overweight...went to Man U..and scored against us,Leaburn a legend the hatrick against Ipswich was terrific..and Mark Stuart a very frustrating player and scored the winner up at Old Trafford all those years ago
  • You can have rose tinted spectacles, but in the main, most of the players gave 100%.

Johnny Robinson for instance couldn't cross for toffee but gave everything for the cause and if we had half his effort, desire and determination we wouldn't have a problem in this league.

The fact Pardew brought in an 18 year untried striker showed how far of the mark he'd gone.
  • ahem

for carl leaburn I give you --- drum roll please

    ANDY JONES -- - -

To be fair we've been blessed with some half decent strikers over the years.

    Paul Williams
    Leaburn
    Whyte
    Melrose
    Crooks
    Pearson
    GORDON WATSON
ralph milne wasn't a striekr was he

    to name some
  • How long was it before he scored a goal in a ground that didn't have the work Park in it ! Selhurst, St. James, Villa.

Those days were awesome, we were a small club with a big heart, no big names, just pure effort. Ironically going back to Leaburn when he left us for Wimbledon, he went on to do quite well. In that last season for us he was awesome.
  • I'm one of those who are moaning about our current crop of forwards and I have to say, if the effort was there it wouldn't matter so much but Andy Gray seems so lightweight and ineffectual. At least Burton made himself a nuisance against Southampton and brought other players into the game. Chris I is a goalscorer but we deployed him wrongly, look at him now at Wolves, scoring for fun (most weeks). Toddy will get us goals if he is played properly and will also provide goals if he has aplayer alongside him who can feed off him- Dickson has the potential- after all look at what he did at Gillingham last season after he was given a decent run in the side- can't understand though we we signed Fleetwood, only to send him straight out on loan when we sold Chris I to accomadate him! Waghorn looks decent enough but I'd rather him on the bench, coming on for the last 20-25 minutes when the opposition are getting tired. Personally, I think we should go for David Healy in January- a proven international goalscorer who has played in the championship and who currently can't get a game.
  • Leaburn is and will always be my idol. As a gangley youth myself i loved the guy, had leaburn on the back of my shirts for years still would if i had a replica now. I know his goal record was awful but he was never a 25 a season man. His hold up play and bringing other players into the action was second to none. for the record i witnessed his hat trick at ipswich which i wil never forget!! he is a legend end off, he may be the butt of jokes to some but he was Charlton and he was what we were all about, saw him play for wimbledon a few times when were away just a shame he got injured and never worked out for him there was about 5 years to late in my books.

  • I can claim to have seen the first 3 goals that Carl scored for us, but due to my sister being taken ill at half time of the Ipswich game, and going home, I missed his hatrick!

Watson, wasn't given enough of a chance with us. Paul "willo" Williams was ok, and as for Jones, well what can you say about him? He was our record £300,000 (?) signing and was most notable for his Luton miss.

What would happen to us now if we had these players playing for us now!!??
  • Paul Williams when he got into England B team was amazing, remeber bigging it up...
  • Then Ron Atkinson at Sheff Wed bought him for £750,000.

Didn't Gordon Psycho Watson go up there too - a year later, maybe?
  • [cite]Posted By: addick1965[/cite]and Mark Stuart a very frustrating player and scored the winner up at Old Trafford all those years ago

    I was there!!!

Yes, he was a good prospect when he left us, sold because we needed the money for the Valley, I think.

Our roll of homour for strikers must include the useless Kenny Achampong, the lightweight Dickie Plumb and the superb Arthur Horsfield, who I saw walk into a post on Woolwhich station the night the Football League Liner, bringing us back from Brighton forgot to stop at Charlton

How about Laurie Abrahams ....... quite skillful, but lightweight.

Ended up playing in NASL for New England Teamen (yes, the Charlton connection), probably paid better tha\n Football League Division II.

Incidentally, our hero Laurie carved out for himself the position of 11th all time leading goalscorer in the NASL.

Take a look at the link and see how many old household names you can spot:
