I know it's pure guess work but how much do you think Derby agreed to pay for Varney, following PP's comment that CFAC got a 'large chunk' of the original transfer fee back?
"boss pay me cart lads of dosh --in an undetermind time i might be able to do my job" " ok GH here is cart loads of dosh ---------- you are my main man. oooooooo and if if dont work out no worries we will be both paid off with more carts and dosh for failing"
I wanna be a top footie team manager its PISS easy. Get others to coach the team, watch videos of unknown twats from Nowhereland, talk bollox, get sussed in a year and paid big wedge to walk off into sunset and be a Sky comentator
I'm probably being a bit unfair on Pardew - he obvious didn't buy a player knowing he would fail - and it's all been said and done a million times on here about both Varney and AP's failings.
We've moved on.
But it is interesting that Dario seemed to be less than glowing about Luke's chances at a higher level.
I think it must be more than £500k. Can a quarter of £2m be deemed a 'large chunk' ?
We all know that Pards did his scouting on YouTube, lol
Absolutely Varney was never the finished article and we paid £2mill for potential - which wouldn't have been so bad if he had a natural composure and cockyness (think Rooney, Bowyer, etc) - but it was utter torture for the lad to even play in the end, he was so bereft of self-belief and confidence, that he appeared on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Credit to him though for never giving up, still grafting 100% and busting a gut to get in the right positions to once again make a calamitous open-goal miss. Many others would have hid or just bottled it.
It's all a bit of a guess how much Derby are prepared to pay for Varney ....... 'large chunk of the original transfer fee' suggests a sizeable down payment - so I would agree at least £750k, maybe up to £1mill, but surely the rest is made up on appearances, goals, promotion to the Prem, England caps and whether we get a hot summer?
Varney is half way (or is it 3 eighths?) through this deal and cost 2m so I would say the total fee from Derby would reflect this, and agree 500k-750k up front is most likely
Just to point out, no one knows exactly how much we have paid Crewe for Varney, particularly as i'm sure a lot of it would have been built into appearances, promotion, international recognition etc.
500k is a large chunk of 2 million (package) when he has done sweet fa and is nearly half way through his contract, however the large chunk referred to might be the total sale package amount.
he can not play against us in the game in a couple of weeks as he is on loan.
he may get a game in the return fixture if the rumours are true that they have bought him however it is on loan with a view to a permanent move he better score for them soon or he could end up back here
Varney always seemd better when deployed wide rather than a middle man. Pardew has to take some of the blame, look at what has happened to the other frontplayers, Gray was so good in the first half of last season that he came runner-up to Kevin Phillips as the Championship player of the year- yet heonly scored three goals for CAFC after he joined them. Dickson was banging them in left, right and center for Gillingham, so much so , that although he was only on loan there for three months he finished up their top scorer for the season. Chris I scored bags of goals for Colchester, joined Charlton, started off OK, was then deployed often as a lone front man and hardly scored after christmas but still ended up top scorer with ten which he has already surpassed at Wolves before X-mas, and is well on course to double that for the season. Anyone see a pattern emerging here- Pards obviously didn't know how to get the best out of his strike force. Have we a dedicated striking coach does anyone know- if not we could do with one- what's Derek Hales doing in his spare time?

Gradi backs Varney Charlton move
Crewe boss Dario Gradi feels Luke Varney made the right move in leaving Gresty Road to join Charlton for £2m.
Gradi told Crewe's website: "Charlton boss Alan Pardew rang me out of the blue and asked me about Luke.
"We discussed his strengths and his weaknesses - my reputation is on the line and I would not have made things up to get a sale.
"I'm sure he'll improve there, playing with and against better players, and there is room for improvement in him."
....er, no Dario. In fact, it could be argued he got worse.

Thats probably what we'll get.
I hope

But if Varney doesn't get goals or Derby promoted to the Prem in his lifetime, then we all know we'll be lucky to see a million.
Never go by headline figures clubs put out.
Just interesting to speculate what a 'large chunk' is, however futile.

I read somewhere that is only a rule in the premier, and the lower leagues, its is up to the two teams to decide whether a loan player can play.
I read that as well, think it was on the OS. Definitely said its up to the clubs to decide.
lets forget about him if he was any good we wouldnt be where we are now
Andy reid i can understand people getting pissed off about but Luke Varney FFS
That's just plain crazy ..... especially so soon after his loan move.
