Who is the most random player you have seen us linked with?

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
For me I think it's Bosman...I am sure as a kid we were interested in signing him (before he changed the face of world football)

Failing that I was always surprised when we were linked with Javier Portillo

  • Morientes, just cos he was pictured in a Charlton shirt at Joma kit launch.
  • Alex the japanese brasilian left sided midfielder.
  • Another one with work permit problems
  • Has to be Simonsen.

He was arguably in the top 10 players in the world at the time andgiven the number of "false dawns" it seemed a far fetched fantasy.

Amazingly though he arrived eventually and was sheer class, too good for some of our players at the time who simply couldn't "read" his intentions.
  • Steve Portway?

That was in Jonathan Ackworths mind...

    Steady - there's NOTHING in Acworth's mind.

    Good point Leroy.
  • Chris Dickson ....... or Dickie Dickie Dickie Plumb, from Yeovil.

Or that Gary Churchouse or Churchyard or whatever his name was.
Nobody remembered to include him amongst the obscure and useless?
  • I was going to say Simonsen - even to this day I still cn't believe it really hapened ;)

  • Marc Overmars, never forget an articale (i think it was the Sunday Mirror) that they run about all the players we were set to sign due to the amount we had from the parker sale, and the position money we had recieved, the names on the list were amazing.
  • I was pretty shocked when we signed Di Canio

And Rommedahlia for that matter, he was quality in euro 2004
  • Simo for me too...total class that man
  • Adrian Mutu - were going to have a half share with Inter.
  • Ronaldo was going to come on loan post injury when we signed that really productive deal with Inter Milan i seem to remember
  • Samuel E'to was going to sign (no really) but then broke his leg so could fly over. Something to do with his academy in Cameroon rather than playing first team football.

Last really "wow, he's playing for us!" moment was Mendonca. Knew we had a real chance of going up with him in the side.
  • Martyn Waghorn.
  • Jason Brown
  • Has to be Simmo or some those Inter stars that were going to fly over here on economy to join a club they had never heard off.
  • Wasn't Gabriel Batistuta linked with us once?

I thought were were supposed to be having a half share in Milan Baros

I seem to recall a stories in a couple of papers about Batistuta coming on loan.

I knew Milan was involved somehow :-)
  • Anyone remember when we were going to be taken over by some Dubai based investment group called Zebeel? Whatever happened to that?

Churchouse was a stalwart of my all time worst XI, although his place has been under pressure a couple of times in recent seasons...

Dickie Plumb was pretty ropey as well although Barry Endean was possibly the worst from that era.

One that kept coming up a few years back was James Beattie, but I agree with Henry that when Mendonca signed you knew we were onto a winner. We had a sparky from Grimsby believe it or not, who was down testing our kit at work and he said it was all over the local preess that he was Valley bound, this was a couple of weeks before he signed. In CAFC terms, one of those all too rare moments of real excitement.
  • van nistelrooy
  • La la la Barry En-dean
  • any one good?
  • Richard Wilson from Fulham
  • wasn't guti and someone else from Real Madrid linked with us a few years ago ?
  • Kezman - he even admitted he would probably have to to us for 2 years to prove himself in the Premiership as the big 4 wouldnt come in for him as he hadnt scored in the champions league games he had played in.
