I like both to be honest, the silence for more formal occasions, but I think the applause is a fantastic idea and stirs up real emotion, does for me, but I have a secret soft centre anyway, dont tell anyone...................oh damn.
Applause is better, celebrates that persons life and applauds all the good they done in there life, as well as sadly drowns out the odd moron who feels it is funny to heckle,
[cite]Posted By: Curb_It[/cite]dearie me. my 4 - 0 and im doing the centre circle lounge thing - ill be rat arsed by then and think the crowd are applauding me!
I feel sorry for the othets in that suite that day, especially those on the next table,a day they will truely never forget

Well lets hope it is 4-0 in celebration.
Can you tell the ref not to whistle until the names have finished scrolling.
I would prefer a minutes silence but understand entirely the reasons why a minutes applause is probably the best option in this day and age.
I remember the most embarrassing moment ever for me as a Charlton fan some years back at Southampton when they were having a minutes silence for the Southampton teams coach driver who had been killed a few days earlier driving a mini bus on the M3.
The silence was being impecably observed when about half way through one of our guys decided to shout out 'bollox' at the top of his voice...it was outrageous.
Supposed to have been a real Addicks (not in my book he wasn't)and England stalwart...which seemed to make it an OK thing to do according to one or two of his pals who were trying to justify his actions to me and afew others at half time.
He got asked to leave(by the Old Bill I believe) during half time and wasn't seen again(well at least that day that is), as far as I know.
I believe we wrote a letter to Southampton to apologise. I think Steve Sutherland might have penned it....though I'm not certain of that.
I had a pop at him in the ground and a couple of his imbecile pals cornered me at the railway station offering me out...to their obvious dissapointment I didn't flinch an inch...Mick Gibbett was on hand with Dave White and we fooked 'em right off.
Scum bags the pair of 'em!
I prefer applause to silence- Celebrating a life rather than mourning i guess. i remember it first when Gerge Best died and it just seemed fitting.
Went to a funeral ( a 60 year old orchestra conductor who had taken 4.5 years to die of cancer) and as the coffin was taken out spontanious applause broke out- Felt so right and yet wrong at the same time.....
this could be an omen............we sponsered the Blackpool game in memory of our Dad & we won 4-1 that day..................so another bunch of lifers in there on this occasion............could it be???
This year will be a special round of applause for my Dad who died when was only 8, this year I saw a photo of him with my Mum on their wedding day!! Mum had lost all photos of them in house fire and due a very sour relationship refused to discuss him, it's a strange thing seeing the photo for the first time was quite a tearful thing but at the sametime its put a closure on the whole thing, Growing to to 50 plus years old and not knowing what your "old man" looked like, not being able to answer questions I needed answering, let alone the one's my children asked, like, how comes we only have only one Grandad? that sort of thing. Well Dad, me and my good lady have given you 3 Grandchildren and between them they have given you 5 Great Grandchildren. I'm sure you would be chuffed to bits with all of them. To say I miss my old man may seem strange to some, when he died some 43 years ago but thats how it is.
I miss you Dad.
And like KBslittIesis said, It'll be a sad day.
Sorry folks, I don't where that all came from but I feel better for it :-)

I thought the Alan Ball applause at Ewood Park was fantastic, the whole crowd ended up chanting his name and I thought that was apropriate for a football crowd for a '66 hero.
I much prefer applause to silence. :) I have bad memories of a one minutes silence a few years back... but I don't really think I'll go into that, might be a tad embarassing.
Quick off-topic quiz question: The OS article has posted a picture of the team applauding on the centre circle, but who is missing? There's only 10 players there. ;)
This time will be a very sad day for our family too, as we lost our amazing Grandad on 4th Dec 2008 aged 71. It's never going to be the same without him and there is a massive void left behind. He followed Charlton through thick and thin and it's down to him that the rest of the family are fans too.
A great Man, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather, Love him and Miss him loads!

Still prefer silence though
Maybe one of the Fans' Forum or any members of staff reading could give a gentle reminder.
And can someone tell the ref that a minute lasts for 60, not 50, seconds!
Its the player that wins Man of the Match that day i feel sympathy for...
Well lets hope it is 4-0 in celebration.

already in hand.
I'm looking forward to this
I feel an incident coming on...oh dear oh dear.
PS....cant find that photo, so, think you've saved your money!!
you going on the same day too???

We will make sure that the ref gives us the full 60 seconds, unlike last year.
