Over the last year or so i have noticed the many comments about our so called poor away support and cant help thinking back to my first away games which
began in the old 3rd division promotion season and remember a couple of draws at Brighton(in the rain) and Peterborough whcih were well attended for
obvious reasons.
However a season on two later i remember going to Blackburn by train with about 9 or 10 others and being the only supporters behind the goal(cant even
rememeber the one Lewes and National coach being at that one?) around 1977 ish
Anyone else think of a poorer turnout?

Worst thing was the fact they still made us pay full whack to get in!
I was at the Wolves game in 96/97, it was a 1-0 loss from penalty. It was our first live Sky game following their seizure of 2nd division football from ITV that season and yeah, it was a very paltry turnout.
Lost 3-0, no more than 70 in a stand that holds 6000
that a league cup game about 91/92 ?
Charlton fan claimed to have won the prize draw at half time walked all along in front of there fans and i think they just gave him a packet of biscuits to come back with.
Was about 30 in the away end till I turned up with about 10 lads I'd dragged across from Leeds where I was at uni
We lost 1-0 I think and they had a bloke sent-off for trying to headbutt one of our players (newton possibly)
I think it was that one, i was only young and there didnt seem to many around, glad to be correct be the oldies though
No AFKA that was a league game,i think we had someone sent off as well shaun newton i think
The cup game was a pretty dire 0-0 as well and we lost the second leg 0-1 when Bob Bolder dropped a cross and a guy called hulme scored and i think Bury wore their horrible purple/white/blue fractals kit
97-98 in the league: 0-0 draw. Scott Parker made his debut from the bench (I think Konchesky's had come against Oxford a week before) and Newton got sent off. Sean got his revenge by hitting the winner in the return match at the Valley.
I was at one of those Bury games can't remember which one but it was dire.
Freezing cold, about 50 people there.
They scored and we equalised striaght away and then the same thing happened with a couple of minutes left.
Remember buying cup after cup of bovril just to keep hands warm and throwing it away once it had gone cold.
When was the last time that happened - Charlton fans turning up to another match en masse because our match was off?
I was at that as I was the week before at newcastle with my leg in plaster , had to sit on the freezing cold terrace and almost got Johny Giles because of it.
Thing is when I tore my ligaments a couple of weeks previous I remember being really pleased in a strange way as it meant I'd be able to get to these two games
Another tuesday night game against Bradford in the Don Valley stadium - about 70 of us. Won 2-1 though.
Middlesborough away in 1987 - Early December, about -40 degrees with the wind chill off the north sea. The covered away end behind the goal at Ayresome Park was condemed and about 70 of us were stuck in the corner. It was so cold the Teeside Old Bill felt sorry for us and let us into the condemed stand for some protection. We made enough noise for about 500 and went on to win 3-1. If I remember rightly, Teeside Old Bill wrote to the Club praising us for our attitude and behaviour.
I'm sure a few more will spring to mind.
i seem to remember you getting up to leave at half time, thinking the game was over.
too much ale oohaah (at least 3 pints).
I was on Sky about 20 times that night as there were only 17 of us I think .....
My own personal low point following Charlton.
respect to you sir for going to that one....
and supaclive fair play to you
;-)
well you had a good reason, the other 16 must be locked up in a madhouse or still thinking pardew will get us promoted ;-)
