Lowest Away Charlton Following

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
Over the last year or so i have noticed the many comments about our so called poor away support and cant help thinking back to my first away games which
began in the old 3rd division promotion season and remember a couple of draws at Brighton(in the rain) and Peterborough whcih were well attended for
obvious reasons.
However a season on two later i remember going to Blackburn by train with about 9 or 10 others and being the only supporters behind the goal(cant even
rememeber the one Lewes and National coach being at that one?) around 1977 ish
Anyone else think of a poorer turnout?

  • I went to went Tranmere on on a Friday night about 92/93, we had come in the car and apparentley the coach had broke down and there was no train. When the game kicked there 5 of us behind the goal, then coach turned up just before half time and there ended up being about 30. We lost 2-0 I think.
  • I was on that coach , didn't break down just had a driver that didn't quite grasp the concept of friday rush hour traffic.

Worst thing was the fact they still made us pay full whack to get in!

the worst i have seen was Wolves away on a friday night must have been either 96/97 or 97/98 season it was live on sky there must have been 50 of us tops, and we lost 2 nil we played shit our away support was shit but it was still a good craic

Burnley away, league cup in 1996, there were exactly 64 of us. We won 2-1 that night after beating them 4-1 in the first leg. Only time I can remember us playing in red shirts and GREEN shorts. The man of the match award that season was a mountain bike donated by sponsors Coca Cola. It was presented to a Burnley player at full time. He then attempted to ride it off the pitch but got bogged down in the Turf Moor mud and had to give up.

I was at the Wolves game in 96/97, it was a 1-0 loss from penalty. It was our first live Sky game following their seizure of 2nd division football from ITV that season and yeah, it was a very paltry turnout.
  • Worst I remember was midweek at Sheff Utd in the mid 90's in that horrible white, purple and green kit.

Lost 3-0, no more than 70 in a stand that holds 6000

Bury at Gigg Lane Deano in goal for them late August hammered it down with rain all day 0-0 must of been about 70 for that one as well

that a league cup game about 91/92 ?

no a league game, On a saturday about 14/15 year ago 93/94 i would have thought!! Will check later.
Charlton fan claimed to have won the prize draw at half time walked all along in front of there fans and i think they just gave him a packet of biscuits to come back with.
  • Only league game i can remember there was Konchesky making his debut. If that was the one, we actually had a pretty good turnout that day.
  • I was at Bury, we had 7-800 there that day.

  • Bradford away on a Thursday nite in May 1997 (day of the election actually)

Was about 30 in the away end till I turned up with about 10 lads I'd dragged across from Leeds where I was at uni

We lost 1-0 I think and they had a bloke sent-off for trying to headbutt one of our players (newton possibly)
  • i went to the league cup game at bury midweek and it rained all day and night at that one

I think it was that one, i was only young and there didnt seem to many around, glad to be correct be the oldies though
  • There can't have been 100 at Everton away in the full members Q/F. Same for Notts County away in the 80's. It was a Saturday morning game, 11:00 kick off (Forest were playing Wimbledon at home in the cup in the afternoon) Seem to remember it was a very very last minute arrangement, the original game was called off due to weather.

No AFKA that was a league game,i think we had someone sent off as well shaun newton i think

The cup game was a pretty dire 0-0 as well and we lost the second leg 0-1 when Bob Bolder dropped a cross and a guy called hulme scored and i think Bury wore their horrible purple/white/blue fractals kit

92-93 League Cup v Bury: Away, drew 0-0.Home (Upton Park) Lost 1-0, goal scored by Alan KNILL and we were lucky to get that! Knill is now the Bury manager.

97-98 in the league: 0-0 draw. Scott Parker made his debut from the bench (I think Konchesky's had come against Oxford a week before) and Newton got sent off. Sean got his revenge by hitting the winner in the return match at the Valley.
  • Burnley away when it was called off was a classic for me. Not our away support but Colchesters at Preston as we ended going to that game. The look on the 10 colchester fans faces when us lot sauntered in was a picture.

I was at one of those Bury games can't remember which one but it was dire.
  • Notts County away- midweek, day before Halloween 1989/90 possibly.
Freezing cold, about 50 people there.
They scored and we equalised striaght away and then the same thing happened with a couple of minutes left.
Remember buying cup after cup of bovril just to keep hands warm and throwing it away once it had gone cold.

When was the last time that happened - Charlton fans turning up to another match en masse because our match was off?
  • There was a boxing day around 15-20 years ago where i remember driving around heading towards various grounds and as Radio 5 announced a game called off we'd try and head towards another one. I think we attempted to go to about 3 or 4 different grounds before giving up and going home.

I was at that as I was the week before at newcastle with my leg in plaster , had to sit on the freezing cold terrace and almost got Johny Giles because of it.

Thing is when I tore my ligaments a couple of weeks previous I remember being really pleased in a strange way as it meant I'd be able to get to these two games
  • Tuesday night in Burnley - possibly 1979/80 season. Colin Powell getting the goal in a 1-0 win. 49 charlton fans saw the goal whilst the 50th was in the loo!

Another tuesday night game against Bradford in the Don Valley stadium - about 70 of us. Won 2-1 though.

Middlesborough away in 1987 - Early December, about -40 degrees with the wind chill off the north sea. The covered away end behind the goal at Ayresome Park was condemed and about 70 of us were stuck in the corner. It was so cold the Teeside Old Bill felt sorry for us and let us into the condemed stand for some protection. We made enough noise for about 500 and went on to win 3-1. If I remember rightly, Teeside Old Bill wrote to the Club praising us for our attitude and behaviour.

I'm sure a few more will spring to mind.
  • Sunderland away - mid 90s and midweek - about 50 :-(
  • [cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]i went to the league cup game at bury midweek and it rained all day and night at that one

i seem to remember you getting up to leave at half time, thinking the game was over.
too much ale oohaah (at least 3 pints).
  • I was at the Burnley game in 1996 with the 64. Seemed like 61 had comp tickets whilst me and the two I went with were the only ones who had to pay that night.
  • I went to the last game ever at Bolton's old ground - on a Friday night, live on Sky and we lost 4-1 I think. We were in a tarpaulin for a covered end, as they'd started knocking down that end already.

I was on Sky about 20 times that night as there were only 17 of us I think .....
  • Boro away at Christmas 2 years ago - less than 20 of us there, one of them being my brother in law who I had dragged along....not great, but according to Les and his pro-zone we bossed it, despite losing 2-0.

My own personal low point following Charlton.
