After watching the last 5 Charlton games - i can't help thinking that although Varney puts 110% effort in every game and covers more grass than any other player, the fact that he hasn't scored any goal must soon mean he has to be dropped!! Ultimately a striker is on the pitch to score and if he continues not to do so Pardew has to give Chrissy Dickson a go or try to get a loanee in that can get us somes goals. The two chances he fluffed against Burnley at home we're shocking and just confirmed his lack of confidence at the moment...................himself and Pardew keep saying its only a matter of time before he starts banging them in, but in our current position in the league how long can we afford to wait?

McLeod more so than Dickson in my eyes.
Maybe a change of manager might do the trick as it seems to have worked wonders for Darren Bent!
I think the difference is that Benty wasn't starting under Jol or Ramos and is now whereas Varney always starts for us.
But by and large, I can't really remember him being effective creating chances for others, either.
It's a shame, because he comes across as an honest pro who just wants to play football - but the fact is,. he doesn't appear to be making an effective contribution at the moment.
Time to rest him and take away the pressure.
Yeah,Fair Point AA
He's just trying too hard.
It seems to work for a certain Wayne Rooney...;-)
Once Varney gets that goal then he could be onto summat. Dropping him will dent his confidence even more - He brings far too much, and works far too hard for the team to even think about being dropped in my book. We need a few more like him,.
Spot on Oggy.
The fact that Pardew has given him such a long spell in the team and that on the whole he's pretty much immune to criticism surely means he's doing what his manager is asking of him?
I agree he should be scoring more goals but if he's doing what he's being told to do for the team than it's not his fault he's not scoring but Pardew's.
he's like "Ball, ball, ball" and he chases after it like a nutter. but when he gets it he becomes confused.
Interesting point that one because, in the League, these are the stats for the following forwards:
Rooney.........805 mins.......3 goals.......36 attempts.......21 chances created
Bent............839 mins.......7 goals.......24 attempts.......12 chances created
Defoe..........971 mins........6 goals......36 attempts........5 chances created
Conclusion: Benty has the best strike rate but still creates chances for team mates. Rooney shoots on site, has a low conversion rate but creates an average of 2 to 3 chances per game for others. And Defoe is just selfish.
I take it you were not around for the Carl Leaburn years then !!!
Very, very likable player, but I'm inclined to agree he might benefit from a couple of weeks out of the spotlight and in the stiffs hopefully re-learning how to finish.
I'd also advocate giving Mcleod a proper run but I'm not sure he's fit enough yet.
