Special Relationships

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
Just watching the championship just wondering how Reading with their links with Irish clubs can produce players like Doyle whilst our special relationships with other worldwide clubs Valencia, Inter, etc... has produced zilch. One word springs to mind Junket !!

  • I've said before - I don't understand why we can't pick up good youngsters from Ireland or Scotland - there are lots at other clubs in the Championship. Guess it's because Pards prefers to do his scouting on Youtube...

Excuse me, did you get out of bed on the wrong side this morning?
  • Sort of agree with the sentiments of this post but concede it ain`t that easy. Sure we have a relationship with Valencia and a few other clubs dotted around europe but bringing in and expecting a player surplus to requirements at one of these clubs would be a gamble on them being able to adapt quickly to Championship football which I feel would be a luxury we just can`t afford whilst we are scrapping for every point. No objection to Charlton bringing in a couple of loans but lets be clear they have to be proven and of decent quality or why bother. Well past his peak I know but HH is the type I mean. Totally committed and better than what we have at left back. This winter will be tough I rekon so lets get in some battlers with prem experience. Don`t care that its only a a quick short term fix. We are in a relegation fight no doubt. Survival this season is our objective.
  • No, but we do have links to one of the best club teams in Africa that has produced players like Kolo Toure and Salamon Kalou.

If just one of these promising players comes through and makes it into the first team then it'll make a massive difference.

I accept that the results of this will take a while to see!

    Like last season, you mean.
  • I take your point jimmy but I mean HH types not Harford.

So 'types' that put a clause in their contact saying that they can leave for no fee if they help participate in a relegation. No thanks.
  • I used HH as an example of "The type" i.e. style of player we need. 100% and experienced.

As my previous response to your post was deleted Weegie I will elaborate.

Do you really, I mean REALLY think that AP makes his selection of players based on YouTube clips? Seriously?

And who says that youngsters at other Championship clubs are good or are any better than ours - you? What qualifications do you have? Perhaps fans of other clubs may be looking at some of our youngsters, e.g. Shelvey, and wondering why they can't produce such exciting English prospects. Ever considered that?

But hey, don't let me get in the way of you bitching on about AP. You have got your agenda to fulfill after all.

As for my "getting out of the wrong side of bed", well today is Rememberence Sunday, in case you didn't know. Just for one day of the year it would be nice not to have to read complete drivel, but then - unfortunately as it is - I already know the only real way to achieve that.

But most of these 'experienced' players from the Premiership aren't commited - that's my point. They don't care about us - they just come to get a bit of match fitness. The last thing they want to do is get stuck in because they might get injured.

We're better off getting players with Championship experience.

Yeah hopefully we're only a year or two away from the first few Ivory Coast players coming here. We've done very well to link up with them ahead of any of the big clubs.

We've got Christensen and Jensen from the Danish club we linked up with, not sure whats going on with Christensen, but Jensen is behind Shelvey, Wright, probably Arter at the moment.

Anyway at the moment, the last thing we need is more promising young players. We've seen several make their debuts in the last year and a half, then we've got slightly older players like Racon, Yassin, Youga and Semedo who aren't yet at their peak.

Think the Valencia thing was more about community work and stuff, its hardly at a time when some young Valencia player would want to come here anyway.
  • Off It - I am not going to bother to respond as I don't have an agenda other than seeing Charlton competing at the top, rather than the bottom, of the Championship.

What I will say is please don't get personal about Remembrance Day - my Dad was a PoW for nearly five years, so I suggest you watch what insults you throw around in ignorance.

(And by the way, that never stopped my Dad having an opinion about Charlton, the manager or where we scouted players from. After all, he gave up a chunk of his life to protect such freedom of speech...)
  • I thought I read in the week that we had an Ivory Coast player coming to Charlton this week?
  • yes he is coming in January i believe.
  • Really.........Didn`t see that. Read about the Czech. Any news on him ?
  • I'm still stinging from the fact that we didn't get Keane when we had our "special relationship" with Inter. Waste of time that was.
  • jeees where did all that come from.

lets all get along for a while folks eh
  • The only Keane we'll get will be in 15 years when they made a Squeeze-like comeback when we play away at Reading.
  • Can we have a link on this Ivory Coast player guys.
