Charlton Athletic have endured a poor start to the season and their home defeat against fellow strugglers Barnsley has put manager Alan Pardew under further pressure. The South London club, despite their parachute payments, have languished in the Championship since their relegation from the top flight and at the moment relegation and not promotion is possible.
The club was also the subject of a possible takeover by Zabeel investments which would have helped ease the financial pressure on the club but the deal fell through. Pardew is looking for a 'new start' from his players to erase recent form and to get back to winning ways...starting with a tough away game against Plymouth.
Q. After a disappointing result last Saturday how has this week been?
A. Normally I would like a game as quickly as possible but I am pleased that we didn't have a midweek game and we could get back to the training field and get back working. The most important thing was to work on set pieces because we have been conceding goals from that part of the game. The free week helped us to work on a number of areas but especially set plays.
Q .This is a results business and there have been several managers who have lost their jobs recently. Do you feel under pressure?
A. No, I don't feel under pressure. I do feel for my staff who I have brought in to the club. I am doing a lot of reflection at the moment and looking at every aspect of the game and looking back and recalling other situations when things were not going well and what I did then to change.
Q. When you're conceding like you are, it's important to be able to score goals - but that's not happening is it?
A. No, but I am looking at all areas. Sometimes you look at things and say the strikers are not getting the service or we are conceding goals and not defending well enough. At times we have played very well and looked in control in some games but it has not been in enough games.
Q. Are you looking for players to bring in?
A. Yes. I think we need new players quickly. I have been on the phone all week and so have my staff but we have had no luck as yet. It may mean one or two going out to finance these deals but it is important to get some new faces in. Due to the finances it has to be carefully managed. We are looking for players who will add something to the team, who will put the foot in and improve the side.
Q. What sort of performance are you looking for at Plymouth?
A. I want a performance that shows honest endeavour, where we compete and win 50-50 balls, be prepared to put their head in a crowded area and get blood on their shirts. I am not saying we are going to win the game but I want the players to come off showing they have at least put in a performance.
Q. Do you think you are in a relegation battle?
A. Things can change quickly in football. Plymouth have shown what can happen if you get a couple of results on the bounce. I am not saying that if we got a couple of wins we would be talking top six but a couple of wins can mean a team can move up a lot.

Good positive thinking.Don't even mention the 'R' word let alone contemplate it.
".....'Appen I think Charrrrt'n are crap at moment and Alan Pardoow is next for t'chop.
Thass right, Alan, int it ......?"
If this was seen every week would we be booed?
He must have read my post on here earlier in the week, plagerism
As for Johnny H, absolute legend. Moo2 reminds me of him a little when he bombs forward.
Madden played in midfield for a bit too, and occasionally centre back.
He had that bit of grit and never-say-die spirit that many players lack today.
Always remember him taking a penalty and skying the ball into Row Z, lol
