Ambrose

Am I being harsh or were Barnsley's first two goals down to him? He was missing from the edge of the box for Macken's first and ponced around rather than clearing the ball for the second andlost it which led to Weaver parrying the ball to Macken.

I've defended him the past, pointing out that he is only 6 months older than "promising youngster" Lloyd Sam for instance but on Saturday I finally felt that he really doesn't give a monkeys about us and can't wait to get back to Ipswich. He just disappears during matches when the going gets tough.

I'm beginning to think that as one of our higher paid players, with premiership experience to boot, he should be delivering more at this level and perhaps Pardew is carrying the can a bit because of his lack of performance.

Am I right or wrong?

  • i think he overplayed when trying to clear the ball for the second but our ridiculous tactic of bringing everyone back for a corner may have led to him trying to buy sometime before releasing it forward
a couple of times i thought he was looking a bit angry and was gonna go thru with a heavy challenge but he almost tackles standing up like a faggot(i do the same cos i can't be bothered to get hurt playing football)
i think he's been a monster under achiever recently cos he is a better player than he has shown of late

maybe our coaching is so bad ..i don't know but i get the feeling the likes of varney and ambrose would be much better players at the likes of wolves or ipswich
  • In all honesty I dont think he has become the player many thought he'd be.

Not quite on topic OooooAaaaagh, but I have to agree with you:

"our ridiculous tactic of bringing everyone back for a corner may have led to him trying to buy sometime before releasing it forward".

Okay, I might think I know how to play the game, lol .......but what is it that the senior Pro game knows that I don't?

Back in the day kiddies, when defending corners we were always taught to leave 1 or even 2 players on the halfway line.
It gave us the opportunity to hold up our defensive clearance - and to lay the ball off, a springboard to turn defence into attack.

On the other hand, if we left a player or 2 up, then opponents had to ensure they left sufficient numbers of defenders to mark them - meaning those defenders would not be in our box in threatening positions to score.

If we bring all of our 11 players back in the box, opponents control virtually the whole outfield territory - leaving us with no outlet except hoping our keeper can hold the ball or the ball goes out of play.

Unless the ball goes in our net.

Obviously I don't understand the game.....?
  • I think the 2nd was, but good point about pulling everyone back on a corner. I actually thought the first came about because of a crap pass forward from Wright to Varney. Luke made the run and instead of playing it into his path & played it to where he was running from. Useless that boy is.
  • agree with both points of view....I confess that Im not an Ambrose fan, but he is totally underachieving in my opinion. I couldnt believe my eyes when we had all 11 players in defence for corners and free kicks....
  • Not so sure about the first. Could probably blame anyone of the midfielders, definitely him for the 2nd - 100% agree about the tactic of everyone behind the ball being crackers.

To be honest he is far too light weight for this division. He clearly doesn't want to fight to get us out of this so I'd have him on his merry way.

He should be 8-10 goals a season at this level. It ain't gonna happen for him here. No doubt he'll bugger of to Ipswich be played just behind the front two and will get 7-8 goals to take them into the play-offs.

    Ho hum
  • Curbs used to drive me mad with the bringing everyone back at corners as well. Especailly when we had rommedahl.

As for Pards what is the point of bringing varney or ambrose back keep them both up and that makes the oppo drop more players back
  • I got frustrated when Curbishley did it as well, he did 99% of the time.

Pardew seems to be doing it more and more often.

Just means our opponents push their whole team forward, even their keeper was halfway up their half.

The 11 men back for corners has been getting on my nerves as well. On top of that there's a problem when we take attacking corner too. Moo2 needs to learn that if he's the only man back he can't try to drop his shoulder and play cute when the opposition break out, he could easily have caused us to ship goals in the last couple of games playing that way.
  • It's not the 11 men back that's the problem it's what they don't do when there.

(2nd goal) Ambrose showed much class bringing a difficult ball down immediately under control and then laying the ball with exactly the correct weight for the Barnsley guy to hammer home.

What begs the question is why the f**k he brought the ball down inside our box in the first place. Row Z would have been a better place; I have never seen any opposition player score from the stand.

(1st goal) My take was that it was a lack of defensive organisation, how many times this year have we left an opposing player unmarked in the box at a set piece to hammer in the loose ball.

I personally think you should always leave a player up field for corners it keeps a couple of theirs back usually and I also believe it is worth having a player to patrol the edge of the area preventing the chance of someone shooting if the ball isn't cleared far enough.

The issue in having everyone back is that you have no out ball and consequently the thing keeps coming back. Personally, I would keep two up as it gives you the opportunity to conter attack in numbers and it also means that, with a less crowded box, your keeper has a better chance of getting to the ball.

Notwithstanding all of that, if your players don't mark properly it doesn't matter how many you have back.
