New striker on way

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
Ivorian starlet Bi Cyriac Gohi has confirmed to skysports.com that he will be joining Charlton in January.

The 18-year-old actually signed a deal last year with The Addicks as part of the agreement Charlton have with ASEC Mimosas and their highly-rated youth academy.

Charlton are now set to exercise their option on the talented striker who has been hitting the back of the net on a regular basis for his club this year.

Gohi is now looking forward to his big move to England.

"I am going to Charlton in January, to start my career there," he told skysports.com

"I can play in the Championship and I believe I can score there."

Gohi is looking to emulate fellow countryman Didier Drogba's success in England.

"Drogba is the best striker in the Premier League, so I want to be the best striker in the Championship," he said.

"I always dream about emulating my heroes, like scoring in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium."

Comments

  • Can he have a work permit or do we need to send him to Belgium for 3 years?
  • "I always dream about emulating my heroes, like scoring in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium."

If he comes to us he might have to change that dream to scoring a consolation at Gigg Lane .....................................
  • Andy Cole anyone??
  • Pardew will ship him out to Barnet, Hereford or somewhere else............whilst spending the rest of any money we have on Macken from Barnsley because he scored two goals against us on Saturday.

lol, unfortunately you may be right

    are you having a laugh.

a stat came up the other day in a game he played for Forest his goalkeeper teammate ran more than him in the game - he's finished.
  • About the last thing we need is Andy Cole-we don't create any chances so what good would a past it fox in the box be?

Golfie, you don't often make me laugh ....... but you summed it up in one there! LOL
  • I was trying to find out what happened to him for FM 09.

BBC said last season we had 5 players from ASEC, he was meant to be one, but was still listed as one of their players on the ASEC website.

Surely he won't be able to get a work permit yet, like the other players we signed from them? Wonder where those quotes came from?
  • I thought that the ASEC players involved were being sent to Belgium and would be able to obtain work permits as they would come under the EU...i could be wrong though

  • andy cole was a wind up forgot the ;-) at the end, anyone watch the forest game yesterday when the commentator said Nottingham forests top goal scorer was ; Own goals!! class...
  • Gohi is one of the five ASEC players.

I thought he had already gone to Nantes or another French club to get a EU work permit. Meant to be the pick of the bunch.
  • Does the ' Bi ' at the start of his name mean he's not sure whether he's a striker or a winger ?

    Pardew will love that.

We had a couple with Fredrikstad in Norway, but they're now in France with Cherbourg, in the French equivalent of League One.

We've got one in France with Angers SCO (Championship level), and another in France with Lorient (top division).

I'm assuming part of the reason they're playing in France is because its easier settling in without language issues.

Don't think any are with Germinal Beerschot.

It would be nice to hear more about them from Charlton themselves.

Do they just get a work permit by playing in Europe for a certain amount of time? Otherwise its not much use them playing for a year in one country then a year in another.
  • well acoording to the oracle of football (championship manager!!) belgium is about 1000 days, france 1200, england closer to 2000, and by changing countries they start at 0 again

Bakery was at Beerschot but is now at Lorient I think.

Fofana and Kouadio were the players at Fredrikstad. Didn't realise that they had moved.

The other players are, I believe, Troh Cesar, Kadio Boris, Gohi Bi Cyriac, N'Gossen Antoine and Zagbayou Viardot but other may have been signed or some of these let go.

Rules about work permits are different country to country. Spain now gives work permits to all players of African origin while France and Belguim allow them to work in those countries. After two years - I maybe wrong on this - they can work anywhere in the EU.

Rules in UK are much tighter for footballers who have to played 75% of recent internationals for a country in FIFAs top 70 or something like that. Hence we couldn't sign Bolanas. Obviously these rules don't apply to "big" clubs but we all knew that.
  • Fofana is listed as a striker on Cherbourg's website

    And Kouadio a midfielder

You've listed 8 there, earlier you said we have 5, I'm a bit confused now.

N'Gossen Antoine and Troh Cesar still seems to be with ASEC

Can't find Kadio Boris or Zagbayou Viardot anywhere.

Do you know if there is there a reason the club don't ever mention these players? Would have thought its the kind of thing they'd put in the match programmes in the community bit. It seems they won't be mentioned until they can play for us.
  • Praise be to the Ivory coast. Wonder what his management skills are like?

Don't know but there was a lot about the ASEC deal on the OS and in the programme. Most likely just waiting until they make an impact, if at all.

I was counting 5 who were signed recently via ASEC plus the three (Bakery, Fofana and Kouadio) who were already in Europe.

FM may not be the most accurate record of players BTW : - )
  • I do the Charlton research for FM, thats why I'm interested more than most fans!

I always assumed when it said we had signed five players from ASEC, it included those three. Maybe not though.

I know you do that's why I was pulling you leg. Finding out the other sites was impressive.

You may well be right about the five and three players. The others may have not been signed or are just under option.
  • Maybe we should send some of our youth players to Abidjan for a few months to toughen up. Might lose a couple to malaria or mines but the survivors would find the championship far less daunting.
  • I think some fans wouldn't mind sending first team players there such as Ambrose.

Some of the players they've produced.
  • When Peter Varney went out to sign the deal he was advised not to go but if he did to stay at the British Embassy for his own safety.
  • He enjoyed his armed guard wherever he went for the week!
