Sports psychologist?

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
I think I've heard it all now...

Alan Pardew is ready to use a sports psychologist in a bid to turn Charlton's season around.

The manager was jeered by the fans as his side crashed 3-1 at home to Barnsley.

All three Barnsley goals came following set-pieces - the exact area the players had been ordered to spend time practising on the morning of the match.

"A sports psychologist is something we might start thinking about," Pardew admitted. "There are players here below par and I wonder about their performances. I have to look at the character."

I recommended this the other week (after the bristol city game I think). I think it is the way to go. It can make a big big difference if approached correctly. The problem is that in this situation you can't really approach it as a team. whoever is brought in needs, in my view, to work with individual players and probably pardew as well, on a one to one basis. That will take a fair amount of time and money.
  • I have been saying this for years. I guess the costs are quite significant now whereas back in the Prem days, they would have been more affordable? Frankly, I'd start with Pards himself and work downwards. Those players who need it most in order are:

    1. Ambrose
    2. Varney
    3. Youga
    4. Sam
    5. Gray
    6. Bouazza

None of these players have recently or at all put in performances which you could say were anywhere near 100% of what is required from them.
  • I just think it's a sign that Pardew has no ideas left on how to motivate these players into believing they can do well. And for that reason he has to go.

I think it is a bigger sign that it has taken so long for him to realise that this is something worth trying.

That may be true but it doesn't have to be. Many of the top clubs employ sport psychologists. It doesn't mean the manager/coaches cannot do their jobs, it just helps to maximise players focus and hopefully improve their performance. They employ fitness coaches, that doesn't make them bad managers. The problem as I see it is that Pardew has for too long seen himself as a motivational manager. Unfortunately that seems to be dillusional.
  • Despite the fact that right now I have barely an iota of confidence in him turning this situation around I am not going to knock him for everything he does - I am surprised that we don't do this already.

    So am I.
  • Who the hell are all these people on the team photo no wonder we are skint.

An asst kit manager, what cant one man lay the kit out.

A performance manager, well if anyone deserves the sack its him,

All we needed was the t lady, and the old girl who cuts the oranges up at half time
  • 3-2-1 you're back in the room...

I think they forgot that bit
  • Sports psychologist.... GRRR.

Why doesnt he just buy a banjo, give it to Varney and Gray, find the nearest cow and see if they can prove me wrong.

Well there are plenty of fans paying your salary Mr Pardew, that strongly believe your performances have been so far below par that it's no longer funny.

I suggest you look very, very closely at your own character.

DO THE HONOURABLE THING PARDEW AND WALK AWAY.

    Or Eileen Drewery? ;-)
  • I know one

& she used to be at Ebbsfleet & did it for nowt to build up her client base

the gaffer & her didn't see eye to eye on a few things & low & behold she was asked not to come back

the players loved her & they won the FA Trophy!

seen where they are now in the league?????

not as daft as some might think...........it works.............what is bad (as someone has already said) is that we don't have one already or this is the first time he's thought about it!!!!!!
  • I found this article on the web. It relates to his time at Reading.

Given his philosophy, and the de facto lack of confidence of the current players, where it all gone wrong?

    Sports Psych link
  • Could Rev R Rufus be our faith healer?!
  • If we don't have one already we need one NOW. I do not understand why in one half we are rubbish then come out and are good in the second half. I don't believe that the players are that bad, need a psychologist.

I agree. What the link on my earlier post is suggesting is that Pards was some kind of SP guru. Clearly if he was, what has gone wrong in so far as the players are collectively and individually massively under-performing to the extent that he is now suggesting they employ one?

DO THE HONOURABLE THING PARDEW AND WALK AWAY.

Walking away when you believe you can turn things around isn't honourable it's foolish.

Signing a sports psychologist is a good move (it worked in striker in the sun!)
