Will the Board listen to us ?

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
Let's face it most of us on here are not fifteen year olds who have jumped on a sinking ship and think it's fun to chant Pardew out. We are Charlton fans of longstanding and have supported the Club through worse times than this. Over the last few months most of us have given Pardew the benefit of the doubt and have been trying to stick by him however increasingly difficult that has become. Now though it's plainly obvious that his time is up. Once fans like Bing and AFKA have finally seen the light then it's the end of the road. The Board should seriously listen to what we are saying. We are not numbskulls who, at the first sight of poor performances, have demanded the managers head but we are level headed Charlton supporters who have tried to stay loyal to the Manager but who can no longer do so. None of us is doing this with any sense of satisfaction or pleasure but because we can see that without decisive action now we are in serious danger of relegation, a relegation that would be disasterous for this Club. I can't remember a time when both the Club were so low in the league tables and I was so low as a football supporter. I'm actually glad I don't support a team like Liverpool or Arsenal as to be a real football fan you have to face the highs and lows of promotion and relegation and fighting both. How boring it must be just to worry whether you will come second or third in the PL. However, I'm not prepared to watch dross week-in and week-out and have to accept it. The Board need to be decisive or they are going to lose the fans. The Board have to listen to us.

PS Pards, if you read this take the hint.

Large - your assessment of CAFC fans balanced approach is well put and is one I suspect the board share.

There can be no doubt, whatever his future, Alan Pardew has been damaged by the significant downturn in our performances but how bad is the damage? Does he have a way back? Our views are external - internally the view may be different. Measures forced on the board (by the banks) and Pardew at the season’s start have come home to roost at two levels.

Our squad is physically lightweight & inexperienced and now especially poorly crafted for a relegation battle. Losing Bougherra & McCarthy left us literally scrambling for cover. Our increased defensive frailty and notably Youga’s and Basey’s loss of form are no accident.

Organizationally it seemed to ferment a level of disenchantment between Pardew and the board and vice versa. We do not know how this disenchantment has grown/ subsided since or is evidenced in the running of the club. It may not, but Pardew’s occasional injudicious comments make him look isolated.

If he is, even if self inflicted, it cannot continue. Whatever his faults (we have all shared our thoughts on those) ultimately we all want a successful Charlton. I feel the board will ask Pardew to identify a clear, affordable, deliverable & sustainable strategy to turn things around for the rest of the season. If he cannot then sadly it is probably best if he is no longer in charge of our football affairs.

The board does face a difficult time but if the club is to move on from its current difficulties they are going to have to show tangible support (modest acquisitions) for whoever they decide will carry us through for the rest of 2008/9.

  • How about putting him on gardening leave ;-)
  • Great post Large............
  • Superb posts by Large and Grapevine49.

I was also struck by another comment in the Pardew out petition thread where someone politely wrote :

"please leave amicably before it all becomes too unseemly."

Those three contributions alone are confirmation that Charlton has the most civilised, thoughtful and intelligent fans in English football.

And frankly, Mr Pardew, we deserve better !
  • Large and Grapevine - both excellent posts and mirror my sentiments entirely.

Grapevine said - "I feel the board will ask Pardew to identify a clear, affordable, deliverable & sustainable strategy to turn things around for the rest of the season. If he cannoI feel the board will ask Pardew to identify a clear, affordable, deliverable & sustainable strategy to turn things around for the rest of the season. "

I hope the board ask him to pack his things and wish him luck for the future.
