Are the Board losing the fans

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
I think its safe to say the Pardew has lost the vast majority of fans now, but there seems to be more and more negative posts about the current board as well these days So are they also in danger of losing the fans the longer this slump continues.

I for one hope that it doesn't happen, but with a new regime in charge it could make them easy targets for a lot of fans, especially if we do go down or they continue to stick with Pardew.

So what can they do to keep the fans happy and convinced they are deeply concerned about current events on the pitch?

If they can't afford to sack Pardew, then I'd like to see Chappell make a statement telling the players and coaching staff to buck their ideas up, not issue ones saying Pardew is the man to take us forward when he is quite obviously taking us backwards.

I heard Riscardo's rant yesterday, and agree that Waggott could use his programme notes to acknowledge whats going on at the club, not how great the Arsenal v Spurs game was on Wednesday.

It's straight into the frying pan for Chappell and Waggott, but they need to stand up and show they are leaving no stone unturned in bringing an end to the continued slump at Charlton. A bit of fighting talk is needed now I think.

  • the impression I get rightly or wrongly is they are just 'caretaking' the club waiting for a buyer, hope that's not the case

Think you're right. The stance of the directors has definately changed compared to a couple of years ago.At that time i felt they were really trying to build something special. They did.But it's falling down and now i think they want to get rid.

The Zabeel deal had quick sale written all over it.
  • I think thats right razil. I do however think that whilst they are still in control the board will do right by Charlton. I think they know thsat investment on a much larger scale than they can afford is the only real way for Charlton to progress now. Unfortunately there are anawful lot of clubs looking for the same thing. Hopefully the reasons Zabeel were looking to buy us for will work in our favour again if and when the board see fit to sell. I have every confidence in the board. Just worried about the manager and players.

Some will get a return on the bond money but they won't get anything like the price they paid for the shares when they first got them.

Also not all the board could or wanted to take up part of the bond so they wouldn't get even that.

And as I said they would most likely have made more money putting in the Abbey over the years.

I know that is not why they put money in. They are fans and helped the club out.

OK, they are open to criticism and quite rightly so but to suggest that they are all looking to make a profit is just not correct. If only the club were worth that much.

    Absolutely.

Imagine yourself, a very successful businessman who has a few noughts after his name. The opportunity arises for you to own/run a share of your favourite club. You decide, for love, to invest knowing that you could probably get a better return on your money, investing in Oil Stocks or buying Gold. Nevertheless this is your hobby and a chance to make you dreams come through.

You decide to get involved and immediately you find the club, living from hand to mouth, struggling to pay the bills, not staying at the same hotel twice because they still owe from the previous stay. You appoint internally the manager who you think may help you build the club on the pitch. He shares your vision and is trustworthy with the meagre resources at the clubs disposal.

Gradually the club is rebuilt both on and off the pitch. A ground like the club rises phoenix-like from the burnt out derelict shell it had become. The fans start returning. The manager starts to get a strong team around him. Off the pitch an equally strong team is formed. Eventually your dream comes true, a Wembley final, tears of joy - the promised land. Despite a setback, the club you love is established in the top flight, playing to packed houses of 27,000 ecstatic fans. The future seems bright. One more push and who knows where it may lead, Europe, Champions League, FA Cup finals?

Suddenly a bombshell. The man who you trust to run the football side wants out. You knew it could happen, realised it would happen but what a time though. The financial boost from a vastly higher TV deal is a season away.

Along comes a powerful bloke with an even more powerful powerpoint presentation. You are swept along with his enthusiasm. The die is cast, the money is spent. Disaster!! It seems that all it was, was presentation and maybe a bit of subterfuge. All that hard work counts for nought and two managers, relegation and one and a bit season later, the club you have shaped, your dreams lay in tatters near the bottom of a league you only thought was a distant memory a couple of years before.

This is a project of love, are you going to abandon your club in it's hour of need. No way!!!

If we all had the money, would we be running away now? Would we be looking to get our money back out? No never. So lets not poor oil on troubled waters. Lets acknowledge that the Directors will be like us, hurting badly but looking for the best way forward which preserves what we have and helps to rebuild what we had.
