Gary Nelson

It's strange where you sometimes come across references to old players.

Earlier in the year myself and my team of Sheltered Housing officers raised £2,500 for Havens Hospices, a local hospice based in the Southend area. They have just sent me their Winter magazine, and whilst I was flicking through, found an article from our own Gary Nelson.

It turns out that his mum died there in 2005, on Christmas Day, aged 68 (lung cancer, although she had never smoked in her life). That must have been an awful Christmas for the Nelson family (my Grandad died on Boxing day)!

In the article he was praising the work that the hospice carry out and how much devotion and attention she received.

It's incredible how the place keeps on going really as it is totally self funded through donations and fund raising. I'm glad we could do our bit!
