Dickson went on loan last season ans scored 11 in 11 starts for them and has, therefore, proven that he can do it in the division below. How is he going to prove he's good enough if he's never going to be given a chance at this level? And by chance I don't mean 10 minutes here and there. I mean a run of half a dozen starts. Varney's had 13 this season and scored twice - he missed that many open goals on Saturday alone.

Not disagreeing. I think Dickson has something to offer although I'm not sure yet as I've just not seen enough of him. Mcleod also has an impressive record and you are not including Dickson's loan at Crewe in those stats.

The point I was trying to make is not Dickson yes or no but that Dickson not playing does not automatically make AP a poor man manager or that every decision is based on "falling out with someone".
  • What Red Pete said...
  • [cite]Posted By: Red_Pete[/cite]Sorry, but I disagree. I thought Dickson was poor when he came on as a substitute on Tuesday night. He didn't put himself in the right positions to occupy their defenders or create goal scoring opportunities. IMHO he is still too raw for this level of football. I have great hopes that he will be great for us but I'm just not sure he's ready yet. Looks like Pardew agrees.

I tend to agree although I think "poor" is harsh.
  • To me it infers a falling out as he's gone from bench to out of the 15. If Pardews thinks he's not ready then why did he come on the other night. I'm struggling to understand how he's droped behind McLeod in the pecking order after in my opinion, a decent cameo the other night.

maybe because Toddy and McLeod are now fit.

Does every player leaving the 16 automatically mean falling out or could it be injury, lack of form, "better" players available or with Gray (and don't know if is is true) family illness.

Couldn't disagree more, but one thing we all agree on is that football is a game of opinions.
Thought he (Dickson) looked very lively and quite a handful. What's wrong with being raw? If you do not follow the perceived text book style of playing Centre Forward then surely now and then you are going to find yourself in positions un-marked as defenders follow the rules that you are ignoring?
The team is crying out for something different and from what I saw first half on Saturday McLeod is not going to offer it. He reminds me too much of Lisbie.
  • To be perfectly honest I'm not that enamoured by either Dickson or McLeod.....it goes without saying that I'd be delighted to be proved wrong....but I don't fancy either of them are going to be the answer to our prayers/problems.
  • I think AP has gone on record to say that Chris is not great at holding the ball up, hence unlikely to play in partnership with Luke as the ball wouldn't stick up top.

There's a simple solution there then, don't play Varney up front as his goalscoring record for us is pathetic. Play Varney wide if he has to play him. Or play Dickson and Gray with Todorov just behind.

  • I think most people see Dicko as a replacement for Varney not Gray..
  • But it's not just Pards who knows that - everybody can see that Dicko & Varney can't hold the ball up.

But they're both pacy and like to get shots in - although Dickson is the better box player.
So if Dicko plays, you team him with Toddy or Gray, don't you?

Bench Varney, and start with Dicko for an hour - and then bring on our very own bull in a chinashop for the last 30 mins, against tiring defences.
  • I like Dicko, But what have you seen to make you think he deserves to start? Varney brings a HELL of a lot to this side and I think some people should get off his back.

erm he scores goals? Varney could still start out wide, I'm not convinced he wouldn't make a decent winger, he can put himself about a bit too unlike some of our more lightweight wide men..
  • Someone mentioned earler that Varns is liable to get a bit airy-ated (or however, you spell it!) ..... I like that in a player, as long as it's not strops just because he's a sulky git.

Varns obviously just loves to play just for the hell of it, which is why he plays with passion and lung bursting effort.
You see that a lot with players who've come up the hard way.

In fact, we've 4 players on our books that've played senior non-league football.
Perhaps, that's what Pards hopes they'll bring to the side.

totally agree... imo they haven't got it and i'm a good judge;-)
  • I just want us to find someone who can stick the round thing in the onion bag. I don't care if he's raw, lazy, overweight or anything else.
You have to score a goal to win a game!
Killer wasn't exactly the perfect all round footballer, but he was an expert at finding the net.
  • Good point, Queenie ....... Killer wouldn't have got barely a chance under Pards, if he'd been a player today.

Nor would players like Gary Lineker, Clive Allen (49 goals in one season) or Jimmy Greaves.

Hold up play, from these players?
Don't make me laugh ...... their job was to put the ball in the net.

Well Dickson has scored goals at whatever level he's played at for a start. We paid over 2m for Varney after he scored goals in league one. Well Dickson did that out on loan for Gillingham.
I agree that Varney works hard but ultimately his job is to score goals and week after week he's missing chances that are costing us points. He is quick and direct but can't finish. Put Dwain Chambers up front for us and he'll run about a lot.

    Exactly.

Killer's first touch at times an elephant would have been ashamed off. He would jump 10 minutes before the centre back did for punts from the keeper just to put him off 'cos he knew he wouldn't win the ball in the air. BUT put a ball over the top and he would 8 times out of 10 outpace and/or outmuscle the centre back and score.

Goals win games and Dickson has scored at every level he's played at. He can't score for us sitting in Row Z of the stand but if Pards is happy with a return of less than a goal a game from those tried to date then so be it. He's the Manager after all and will stand or fail by his selections.

I sincerely hope, for the sake of the Club, he proves me wrong but with a record of 4 goals from the last 11 away games I have my doubts.

Except he'd be banned for drugs maybe probably....
  • With Dickson Pardew's doubt I'm sure are nothing to do with goalscoring, its the rest of his play.

Would like to see him get a chance, many times we could do with someone who just goes out to score and nothing else.
  • On a separate note does anyone know exactly what happened when Dickson hurt himself last season in the hotel?
  • he was dancing on a table and fell off apparently!
  • [cite]Posted By: Addick Addict[/cite]On a separate note does anyone know exactly what happened when Dickson hurt himself last season in the hotel?

He had a row with Pardew who said "You're not my friend any more so I'm not picking you but I'm going to tell the press you are injured"

Wasn't it something to do with him & Lloyd Sam pissing about? Lloyd pulled-down Dicko's shorts and he twisted his knee turning round....or so I heard.

I heard it was what F-blocker said only it was DIckson doing the short pulling down. Boys hey!
  • Perhaps that didn't help to cement his future in the first team then.
  • [cite]Posted By: Addick Addict[/cite]Perhaps that didn't help to cement his future in the first team then.

I really don't think so other than him not being available for a long time.
  • [cite]Posted By: Scoham[/cite]With Dickson Pardew's doubt I'm sure are nothing to do with goalscoring, its the rest of his play.

Funnily enough Ian Wright was talking on Sky Sports yesterday about the fact that the hardest thing for him to come to terms with, when he stepped up to the Football League, was the expectation of the Manager for him not to give the ball away cheaply. I don't know whether that this was as a result of a poor first touch or because he was being too clever but, after a few games scoring goals, I suspect that this deficiency wasn't quite so much of an issue.

If I was to be really contentious (which I am prone to be) I would mention Jermaine Defoe. He is by no means the complete footballer in that his work ethic can be criticised at times and he's not the strongest on the ball but I suspect, if he rejoined us tomorrow, more than a few of us would forget any grudges we might harbour.
