This whole "Charlton are not are rivals" bullshit only exists on this forum IMO... If you go to the games, its is a different story!
end of!

That's mostly because those who 'hate' Charlton want any excuse to hate anyone so they can and start looking for trouble.

You get needle from people who want needle.

They probably can't ••••••• write or communicate properly in any case so you won't see them on boards like this. So that's the reason for your 'different story' IMO.

I don't 'hate' Charlton, I find them a little distasteful and I look down my nose at them, but that doesn't warrant 'hate'.

Put Brighton, Millwall or Leeds in a stand opposite me and a whole new level of negative emotionality comes along.

That's because, for personal, which are loosely based on tribal club reasons, I ••••••• hate them. Really ••••••• hate them.

I'm not trying hard to 'not hate Charlton'. For me they are beneath that and I get aggravated by any number of our fans assuming or asserting that 'we' being Palace fans 'hate' Charlton. 'We' don't. 'We' hate Brighton and Millwall and if you think differently, then that's for personal reasons which you might well share with other Palace fans.

Good luck to you mate.
Don't go thinking that that should be an opinion held by a majority of Palace fans however.
Charlton just don't matter enough. To anyone at all.
They have good reason to hate *us*, to them, there is history.

They really want someone to care about them and reciprocate their hatred, they have the largest inferiority complex because no-one they come across sees them as real rivals. Do you seriously think if Millwall gave a monkey's toss about Charlton that they'd look at us as their nearest and dearest?

Would they bollocks.

We *have* rivals, long lasting and historic ones. Charlton don't.

Don't get me wrong, beating them last night felt really, really good.

But all they are to me is a properly simple teenager trying to provoke anything they can to get attention.

This was put into perfect relief last night for me, when I witnessed a middle aged Charlton fan assault on member of a small group of teenage Palace fans singing outside the off-license on the approach to Norwood Junction station.

Retard assaults teenage fan, fan replies with:

"What the •••• are you doing? All I'm doing is singing songs. I'm fifteen, grow up you dickhead..."

I will always look at Charlton as a lower level of club, regardless of where they are in relation to us. This incident does nothing to change that. For me they are an ugly, slightly retarded try-hard friend of a friend which I avoid because they offend me. Hatred doesn't come into it, if I hated Charlton I'd relish coming across them for the quality of atmosphere and banter. I don't.

I'm sure that most would agree here that the atmosphere when we play either Millwall or Brighton is special and far better than that of when Charlton turn up.

Alright, at the moment, lots of folks are tightening the belts and that may well be a reason for the crowd being shorter than desired, but mark my words, a derby with our big two, Millwall or Brighton, would have been worth another 1000 at least.

Don't go spouting the relevance thing either.
Rivals are rivals, and just because Charlton are in our division at the moment that makes no difference to our history as Palace.
They are relevant as current opponents and interesting because they are local, but not special.
Rivalry is not something to be sought out or craved (or bought into when the media try and force it on us a la Charlton), it devalues genuine rivalry between clubs with real history, which Charlton do not have and can not just conjure out of their own sense of mass inadequacy.

I just can't find it in my heart to hate them, and I'm not prepared to make that space without good reason. Just because they hate us is *not* good enough reason.

Comments

  • So boring listening to them go on.

They do hate us, especially the younger members of their support.
  • For someone who doesn't hate us, he sure took a long time to get his message across !

Methinks he doth protest too much.
  • god that was boring

yeah young ones god it was like kindergarden there
  • 'clubs with real history'?

    Palace?

You are having a laugh, Nigel.

have to admit that i witnessed that.
the fella (charlton fan) who did it ran past me and smacked the unaware youngster from behind. he then went back to his group of mates to brag of 'doing him again' and that he 'doesn't look 15' to try and justify it.
to be honest, it was both cowardly and 'cking embarrassing.

that and the group of cafc that decided that any parked motors would look better with dents in and wing mirrors missing.

when people say every club has them, they are right.
    sadly we are no different.

keep thinking about the idiot at London Bridge who spat at the ususpecting palace scarf wearing (can't think of a nicer word to call him) geek.

it wasn't funny, just embarrassing, and I'm glad I wasn't wearing any charlton stuff to show i was on the supposed 'same side' as him.

his mates all behind him laughing as he was sneering and going red in the face shouting "come on!" and swearing at him.
  • standard palace garbage... you´d think after finally beating us in 12 years in the league this would be the time they´d come out of the closet and rejoice over their "rivals"

some of that parliamentary speech posted above is laughable... in fact most of it is

amongst the under 30´s i´d say (going back to the lost generation without playing millwall) there is 100% hatred, more diluted in older age groups with people who hate as a reaction to their treatment at Selhurst
  • what an utter mug!!!!!
  • Typical rambling Nigel speak...being of that older generation.....I hate them myself...with passion....my eldest son seems to have aquired the same feelings.
